Theology, Psychoanalysis and Trauma

Theology, Psychoanalysis and Trauma

Marcus Pound; Conor Cunningham; Peter Candler

SCM Press
2008
nidottu
Marcus Pound’s book develops a specifically theological form of psychotherapy rooted in liturgy and arising from engagement with postmodern psychoanalysis. Jacques Lacan’s claim that ‘the unconscious is structured like a language’ radically challenged psychoanalysis and Pound uses this as the basis for his work in this volume. Postmodern psychoanalysis has been anticipated by theology, and Pound goes further in this claim to argue there has been a return to theology in psychoanalysis

The Assault on Equality

The Assault on Equality

Peter Knapp; Jane Kronick; William Marks; Miriam Vosburgh

Praeger Publishers Inc
1996
sidottu
^IThe Assault on Equality^R critiques the social theory underpinning the social policies of the new political right. It focuses on the attempt by Herrnstein and Murray in ^IThe Bell Curve^R to provide theoretical justification for social program cutbacks and coercive social policies. ^IThe Assault on Equality^R reanalyzes Herrnstein and Murray's own data and demonstrates that their conclusions are questionable results of polemic and ideology that ignore and contradict the fundamental findings and methods of 20th-century sociology and genetics. The policy proposals of Newt Gingrich are the political counterpart to the flawed social theory of ^IThe Bell Curve^R. Both scholarly and readable, this is an appropriate supplement in courses such as race relations, stratification, theory, policy, and research methods. It shows the contemporary relevance of basic theoretical and methodological insights of sociology contradicted by ^IThe Bell Curve^R and other works of the new political right. Appendices present the statistical issues and the theoretical background ignored by such works. From a multi-disciplinary perspective, the authors take issue with the social policy positions of the new right concerning affirmative action, education, family, race, social class, and welfare.

For decades, Australian federal governments have sought to deliver national security cheaply, spending no more on defence than deemed absolutely necessary. The result is that the nation has seriously underinvested in defence capability. This has occurred because of complacency in defence and policy circles, and the belief that Australia’s major threats had receded following the end of the Cold War. However, the reality is that Australia’s strategic outlook is rapidly worsening just as its ability to deter aggression and defend itself has been degraded. The Australian Institute of Public Affairs has published this book as a blueprint for immediate action on Australia’s defence, 2025–2028. Defence experts Peter Jennings AO, Michael Shoebridge and Marcus Hellyer make 36 recommendations for the adoption of measures for strengthening Australia’s military power.

Myrtaceae is the ninth largest flowering plant family; it is economically important in the production of timber, gums, essential oils, fruits and spices and contains many commonly cultivated ornamentals. This family is particularly rich in large genera, often found in some of the world’s most threatened ecosystems where their fruits comprise an important part of the diet of primates and birds. The similarity of Myrtaceae species is high and its taxonomic and nomenclatural history is complex, resulting in notorious difficulties in basic identification, inventory compilation and floristic treatment. World Checklist of Myrtaceae is a much needed work that lists all validly published names in the family, providing the source of their publication and indicating which names are currently accepted and which are synonyms. This makes it the standard nomenclatural reference for further research into this important family.
