Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Wurzburg, language: English, abstract: This term paper is a meta-discussion on Kate Chopin's short story "Desiree's Baby" in reference to four theoretical texts, which to a greater or lesser extent, can be applied to the short story of my choice. The first step will be to illustrate the theoretical concept of gender postulated by Joan W. Scott, followed by the application of this theory on Chopin's short story by examining gender bias. Secondly, I will explain Du Bois' concept of double consciousness and Edward Telles theory of color race. These concepts will, then, insofar it is possible, be applied to "Desiree's Baby''. Thirdly, the concept of a nation in the understanding of Jean-Jacques Rousseau will be analyzed. Therefore his ideal nation state will particularly be taken into account and this is followed by scrutinizing the short story for his theory to be applied to. At last, I want to point out the correlation between the represented concepts and what questions can be raised when reading the short story and applying the different theories. In addition to developing an interpretation, this meta-discussion has the aim to exhibit that the application of a theory can produce a meaningful discussion.

In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden mehr als 840 Studien veröffentlicht welche die abschreckende Wirkung von Strafe untersuchen - ohne zu einem abschließenden Urteil zu kommen. Diese Meta Analyse zeigt, dass die Nullhypothese der Nichtexistenz eines solchen Abschreckungseffekter eher abgelehnt werden kann. Weiterhin werden einige wichtige Determinanten identifiziert, welche die Resultate solcher Studien - in wie weit Strafwahrscheinlichkeit und Strafhärte eine abschreckende Wirkung auf potentielle Delinquenz haben - erheblich beeinflussen. Studies have shown that the main difficulty faced in learning to program is related to planning rather than language structures. As possible solution to address this difficulty, this book describes an investigation into the effects of fostering a meta-schema for program design for novice programmers. A study was conducted in an introductory programming course with two groups of students. The experimental group was taught about a design strategy and special emphasis was put on design visualization. For the control group conventional teaching was applied. Also in the following lab assignment, design was emphasized for the experimental group. Analysis of the program code and the documentation of the students indicates the intervention did not influence the correctness of the programs. However, it had a positive effect on problem decomposition. Furthermore, it is observed that students have problems with effectively applying language structures. An ideal curriculum for programming would therefore foster the development of both meta-schemas (e.g. design strategy and visualization) and specialized design schemas (e.g. best practices in applying data structures and control structures).
