The Swoop! by P. G. Wodehouse, Fiction, Literary
It may be thought by some that in the pages which follow I have painted in too lurid colors the horrors of a foreign invasion of England. Realism in art, it may be argued, can be carried too far. I prefer to think that the majority of my readers will acquit me of a desire to be unduly sensational. It is necessary that England should be roused to a sense of her peril, and only by setting down without flinching the probable results of an invasion can this be done. This story, I may mention, has been written and published purely from a feeling of patriotism and duty. Mr. Alston Rivers' sensitive soul will be jarred to its foundations if it is a financial success. So will mine. But in a time of national danger we feel that the risk must be taken. After all, at the worst, it is a small sacrifice to make for our country. -- P.G. WODEHOUSE

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the world's best-known and most translated documents. When it was presented to the United Nations General Assembly in December in 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt, chair of the writing group, called it a new "Magna Carta for all mankind." The passage of time has shown Roosevelt to have been largely correct in her prediction as to the declaration's importance. No other document in the world today can claim a comparable standing in the international community. Roosevelt and French legal expert RenÉ Cassin have often been represented as the principal authors of the declaration. But in fact, it resulted from a collaborative effort involving a number of individuals in different capacities. One of the declaration's most important authors was the vice chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Peng Chun Chang (1892-1957), a Chinese diplomat and philosopher whose contribution has been the focus of growing attention in recent years. Indeed, it is Chang who deserves the credit for the universality and religious ecumenism that are now regarded as the declaration's defining features. Despite this, Chang's extraordinary contribution has been overlooked by historians. Peng Chun Chang was a modern-day Renaissance man-teacher, scholar, university chancellor, playwright, diplomat, and politician. A true cosmopolitan, he was deeply involved in the cultural exchange between East and West, and the dramatic events of his life left a profound mark on his intellectual and political work. P. C. Chang and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the first biography of this extraordinary actor on the world stage, who belonged to the same generation as Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek. Drawing on previously unknown sources, it casts new light on Chang's multifaceted life and involvement with one of modern history's most important documents.

Born in 1919, Strawson was a leading proponent of ordinary language philosophy. He is the author of the early and extremely influential paper "On Referring" in which he criticized Russell's theory of definite descriptions. His most influential book, Individuals, helped to raise the status of metaphysics as a philosophical enterprise. Themes first addressed in this book continued to be of concern to him in his later work, including the possibility of objective knowledge, the subject-predicate distinction, the ontological status of persons, and the problem of individuation.Contributors to the book include: Ruth Garrett Millikan, Susan Haack, E. M. Adams, Panayot Butchvarov, Richard Behling, John McDowell, Simon Blackburn, Tadeusz Szubka, David Frederick Haight, Joseph S. Wu, Andrew G. Black, David Pears, Robert Boyd, Hilary Putnam, Paul F. p-adic Analysis Compared With Real

p-adic Analysis Compared With Real

The book gives an introduction to $p$-adic numbers from the point of view of number theory, topology, and analysis. Compared to other books on the subject, its novelty is both a particularly balanced approach to these three points of view and an emphasis on topics accessible to undergraduates. In addition, several topics from real analysis and elementary topology which are not usually covered in undergraduate courses (totally disconnected spaces and Cantor sets, points of discontinuity of maps and the Baire Category Theorem, surjectivity of isometries of compact metric spaces) are also included in the book. They will enhance the reader's understanding of real analysis and intertwine the real and $p$-adic contexts of the book. The book is based on an advanced undergraduate course given by the author. The choice of the topic was motivated by the internal beauty of the subject of $p$-adic analysis, an unusual one in the undergraduate curriculum, and abundant opportunities to compare it with its much more familiar real counterpart. The book includes a large number of exercises. Answers, hints, and solutions for most of them appear at the end of the book.Well written, with obvious care for the reader, the book can be successfully used in a topic course or for self-study.

Two meetings of the AMS in the fall of 1989 - one at the Stevens Institute of Technology and the other at Ball State University - included Special Sessions on the role of $p$-adic methods in number theory and algebraic geometry. This volume grew out of these Special Sessions. Drawn from a wide area of mathematics, the articles presented here provide an excellent sampling of the broad range of trends and applications in $p$-adic methods.

P-Adic Functional Analysis
This volume collects together lectures presented at the Sixth International Conference held at the University of Ioannina, Greece, on p-adic functional analysis with applications in the fields of physics, differential equations, number theory, probability theory, dynamical systems, and algebraic number fields. It discusses the commutation relation AB-BA=I and its central role in quantum mechanics.
p-adic Functional Analysis
A presentation of results in p-adic Banach spaces, spaces over fields with an infinite rank valuation, Frechet (and locally convex) spaces with Schauder bases, function spaces, p-adic harmonic analysis, and related areas. It showcases research results in functional analysis over nonarchimedean valued complete fields. It explores spaces of continuous functions, isometries, Banach Hopf algebras, summability methods, fractional differentiation over local fields, and adelic formulas for gamma- and beta-functions in algebraic number theory.

P.O.W. in the Pacific

P.O.W. in the Pacific

This is the story of William N. Donovan, a U.S. Army medical officer in the Philippines who, as a prisoner of war, faced unspeakable conditions and abuse in Japanese camps during World War II. Through his own words we learn of the brutality, starvation, and disease that he and other men endured at the hands of their captors. And we learn of the courage and determination that Donovan was able to summon in order to survive. P.O.W. in the Pacific: Memoirs of an American Doctor in World War II describes the last weeks before Donovan's capture and his struggles after being taken prisoner at the surrender of Corregidor to the Japanese on May 6, 1942. He remained a P.O.W. until his release on August 14, 1945, V-J Day. Shocking, moving, and yet tinged with Donovan's dry sense of humor, P.O.W. in the Pacific offers a new perspective-that of a medical doctor-on the experience of captivity in Japanese prison camps as well as on the war in the Pacific. The book is edited by Donovan's daughter Josephine, with the assistance of her sister, Ann Devigne Donovan. Readers will be inspired by this true story of one American's heroism.

This manual presents an interview for detecting 20 childhood psychiatric disorders in children aged six to 18. The authors aim to develop an interview for diagnoising frequently-encountered behavioural problems. The Paretn Version of ChIPS essentially consists of the same interview text altered from second to third person to address the parent rather than the child. It should be useful in screening for disorders such as: attention deficit and hyperactivity; substance abuse; specific phobia; social phobia; acute stress; post-traumatic stress; bulimia; depression; dysthymia; hypomania; enuresis; and schizophrenia. The manual includes background about the interview's development; a training section providing specifications for preparing mental health paraprofessionals to administer it; questions written for a child's level that screen for 20 disorders; and a section devoted to scoring and analyzing results.
