Im Studium "A Theory of religion" bringt er (zusammen mit einem Kulturanthropologen Williams Sims Bainbridge) die Theorie der rationalen Entscheidung in die Religionssoziologie ein. Der zufolge entscheidet man sich generell f r eine Religion, weil man positive Ergebnisse daraus erwartet( zum Beispiel ewiges Leben nach dem Tod). Die Theorie ist nicht nur ein Versuch des Verstehens des religi sen Verhaltens eines Menschen. Sie bestreitet die Aussage der S kularisierungsthese, wonach mit fortschreitender Modernisierung Religion und Religiosit t an Bedeutung verliert (Finke/Stark 1996: 249). Ihr Augenmerk wird dagegen auf die Angebotsseite der Religionen, auf die Religionsgemeinschaften und Kirchen. Ob es zur S kularisierung in der Gesellschaft komme oder nicht, h nge von der Beschaffenheit des Marktes der Religionen ab.
