"Caribbean HIV * AIDS Readers" aim to promote good health practice through extensive reading. This important series of readers is designed to help young people to develop the knowledge, attitudes, self-esteem, and skills needed to manage their relationships safely and happily, and to cope better with the crisis of HIV and AIDS which is affecting all our communities today. The stories are affirming and empowering for young readers as they portray a variety of strong believable characters who are finding ways to make choices in adversity and take control of their lives. "Caribbean HIV * AIDS Readers" can be used across the curriculum: in literacy, social studies, life skills and science classes as well as in after-school or community clubs. The readers are at three levels. Within each level there is some development in reading levels and language is controlled. The issues are dealt with in a straightforward way with respect for individual and cultural values. Level 1 includes simple stories that encourage good relationships, and prepare children to protect themselves and understand how their bodies fight disease. In Levels 2 and 3, stories about different aspects of HIV and AIDS are presented with factual information and activities for children. This is a compelling account of the First World War. It offers clear analysis of the war on land, sea, and air, and considers the impact of the war on Europe's civilian population. Issues addressed include the relationship between war and industrialisation, trench warfare, the long term effects of the war on changing social structures, and economic and demographic consequences. The main text is supplemented by a rich selection of primary source material (from songs, soldiers' slang, to diary accounts).
Data Mining in Large Sets of Complex Data

Data Mining in Large Sets of Complex Data

The amount and the complexity of the data gathered by current enterprises are increasing at an exponential rate. Consequently, the analysis of Big Data is nowadays a central challenge in Computer Science, especially for complex data. For example, given a satellite image database containing tens of Terabytes, how can we find regions aiming at identifying native rainforests, deforestation or reforestation? Can it be made automatically? Based on the work discussed in this book, the answers to both questions are a sound “yes”, and the results can be obtained in just minutes. In fact, results that used to require days or weeks of hard work from human specialists can now be obtained in minutes with high precision. Data Mining in Large Sets of Complex Data discusses new algorithms that take steps forward from traditional data mining (especially for clustering) by considering large, complex datasets. Usually, other works focus in one aspect, either data size or complexity. This work considers both: it enables mining complex data from high impact applications, such as breast cancer diagnosis, region classification in satellite images, assistance to climate change forecast, recommendation systems for the Web and social networks; the data are large in the Terabyte-scale, not in Giga as usual; and very accurate results are found in just minutes. Thus, it provides a crucial and well timed contribution for allowing the creation of real time applications that deal with Big Data of high complexity in which mining on the fly can make an immeasurable difference, such as supporting cancer diagnosis or detecting deforestation.

Sometimes we don't get to pick our battles ... they pick us On a picture-perfect day, a day cruise ship is hijacked off the Florida coast and "wired" with explosives. At the same time car bombs explode across America-lots of car bombs. As these startling revelations unfold, the perpetrators turn out to be the ultra-violent "Los Zetas" who have joined forces with Al-Qaeda to exact the release of a Colombian drug lord jailed in Miami. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Ray Hanna has the ship surrounded but finds himself on a political leash. He can't release Alvarez and he can't storm the ship without endangering the 218 passengers. It's a standoff. When the hijackers begin blowing up passengers wearing life jackets rigged with C-4-makeshift suicide vests-Hanna receives 24 hours to end the deadlock or else, leaving him with just one unthinkable choice. For Captain Skip Myles, the situation transcends belief. The unimaginable shock of losing his vessel to armed terrorists a mere ten miles from port has left him a bewildered captive on his own ship. When the captain doesn't come home from his evening cruise, his worried wife calls her ex-Navy SEAL brother in Detroit. Cal rushes to her side and later embarks on a lone mission to rescue Skip, convinced that if he doesn't, no one else will. A few nights later, armed with a black-market Uzi and some borrowed scuba gear, Cal Stringer falls back into the Gulf of Mexico for his two-mile underwater swim to the Majestic Star, plunging headlong into a deadly showdown between the U.S. Coast Guard, Al-Qaeda, and the bloodthirsty Mexican Drug Cartel. This is where our story begins ...... WIRED is a high seas thriller that explores the entire spectrum of human emotion. It's about love, fear, self-doubt, determination, and self-sacrifice. It's about how a single event changes the fragile landscape of ordinary people's lives. Similar to the movie "Captain Phillips", the hijacking of the Majestic Star merely sets the stage for the drama. The real story is about how the ship captain, his wife, the wife's ex-SEAL brother, and the Coast Guard admiral, not only brave the crisis, but daringly meet it head-on. NOTE: The WIRED movie script was a finalist at the Beverly Hills Film Festival for best screenplay. For more information on the script, contact Ronson Duncan at [email protected].

_Cambrai Campaign 1917_ is an account of the British Expeditionary Force s battles in November and December of 1917\. It starts with the plan to carry out a tank raid on the Hindenburg Line at Cambrai. The raid grew into a full scale attack and Third Army would rely on a different style of attack. The preliminary bombardment would be done away with and the troops would assemble in secret. Predicted fire had reached such a level of accuracy that 1,000 guns could hit targets without registration. Meanwhile, over 375 tanks would lead the infantry through the Hindenburg Line, ripping holes in the wire and suppressing the enemy. The study of the German counter-attack ten days later, illustrates the different tactics they used and the British experience on the defensive. Each stage of the battle is given equal treatment, with detailed insights into the most talked about side of the campaign, the British side. It explains how far the Tank Corps had come in changing the face of trench warfare. Over forty new maps chart the day by day progress of each corps on each day. Together the narrative and the maps provide an insight into the British Army s experience during this important campaign. The men who made a difference are mentioned; those who led the advances, those who stopped the counter-attacks and those who were awarded the Victoria Cross. Discover the Cambrai campaign and learn how the British Army s brave soldiers fought and died fighting to achieve their objectives.

This is an overview of different models and mechanisms developed to describe the capture and relaxation of carriers in quantum-dot systems. Despite their undisputed importance, the mechanisms leading to population and energy exchanges between a quantum dot and its environment are not yet fully understood. The authors develop a first-order approach to such effects, using elementary quantum mechanics and an introduction to the physics of semiconductors. The book results from a series of lectures given by the authors at the Master's level.
