On 1953, kuninganna Elizabeth II kroonimisaasta. Selles raamatus uurib Sidney Chambers koos inspektor Geordie Keatingiga kuut juhtumit, mille hulgas on Cambridge'i advokaadi kahtlane enesetapp, skandaalne juveelivargus aastavahetusel, dzhässipromootori tütre seletamatu surm ja shokeeriv kunstivõltsing.Eesti vaatajale on sarmikas Sidney Chambers ja inspektor Geordie Keating tuntud ka Briti sarjast "Grantchester".
The first of the Grantchester Mysteries, and inspiration for the PBS/Masterpiece television series, finds Vicar Sidney Chambers beginning his career, as both a spiritual leader and a detective. It is 1953, the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II . Sidney Chambers, vicar of Grantchester and honorary canon of Ely Cathedral, is a thirty-two-year-old bachelor. Tall, with dark brown hair, eyes the color of hazelnuts, and a reassuringly gentle manner, Sidney is an unconventional clerical detective. He can go where the police cannot. Together with his roguish friend, inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney inquires into the suspect suicide of a Cambridge solicitor, a scandalous jewelry theft at a New Year's Eve dinner party, the unexplained death of a jazz promoter's daughter, and a shocking art forgery that puts a close friend in danger. Sidney discovers that being a detective, like being a clergyman, means that you are never off duty, but he nonetheless manages to find time for a keen interest in cricket, warm beer, and hot jazz-as well as a curious fondness for a German widow three years his junior. With a whiff of Agatha Christie and a touch of G. K. Chesterton's Father Brown, The Grantchester Mysteries introduces a wonderful new hero into the world of detective fiction.
The second book in The Grantchester Mystery Series, and the inspiration for the primetime PBS/Masterpiece television series, Grantchester. The loveable full-time priest and part-time detective Canon Sidney Chambers continues his sleuthing adventures in late 1950's Cambridge. Accompanied by his faithful Labrador Dickens, and working in tandem with the increasingly exasperated Inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney is called on to investigate the unexpected fall of a Cambridge don from the roof of King's College Chapel; a case of arson at a glamor photographer's studio; and the poisoning of Zafar Ali, Grantchester's finest spin bowler, in the middle of a crucial game of cricket. As he pursues his quietly probing inquiries, Sidney also has to decide on the vexed question of marriage. Can he choose between the rich, glamorous socialite Amanda Kendall and Hildegard Staunton, a beguiling German widow three years his junior? To help him make up his mind Sidney takes a trip abroad, only to find himself trapped in a complex web of international espionage just as the Berlin Wall is going up. Here are six interlocking adventures that combine mystery with morality, and criminality with charm.
Archdeacon Sidney Chambers is beginning to think that the life of a full-time priest (and part-time detective) is not easy. So when a bewitching divorcee in a mink coat interrupts Sidney’s family lunch asking him to help locate her missing son, he hopes it will be an open and shut case. The last thing he expects is to be dragged into the mysterious workings of a sinister cult, or to find himself tangled up in another murder investigation. But, as always, the village of Grantchester is not as peaceful as it seems… From the theft of an heirloom to an ominous case of blackmail, Sidney is once again rushed off his feet in this eagerly anticipated fifth instalment in The Grantchester Mysteries series.
Sidney Palmer lives in a rural part of the Home Counties with his parents and doting grandmother. As an only child he learns to amuse himself at Kirkstone Grange where his father is the head gardener. Life is comfortable until 1939 when Britain declares war on Germany, but as the war progresses his peers are being called up for active service and, Joyce, his former school friend joins the WRNS. Sidney has high hopes of being a pilot in the RAF but his father casts doubts as to whether he would be accepted for military service because of his childhood illness. Meanwhile he and his father continue to ‘Dig For Victory’ as they help to feed the nation.
Sidney the sheep is living the best life a sheep could ask for, until one day, his friend Farmer Jack lends him to a local Nativity Play. Sidney realises quickly that life is going to look very different, with lots of lights, many loud noises and a number of people wearing strange clothes. Then the unexpected happens. And so Sidney does what any overwhelmed sheep would do… he runs away. But to where? After a nasty fall and some rather horrible weather, Sidney sees some inviting lights, practically an Inn of his own. Following his adventure will he find the calm and quiet he has so missed? Or will there be more surprises?
