Dedicated to American artist Sandy Skogland, this book accompanies her first anthological exhibition at CAMERA in Turin, Italy. It retraces the entire path of the artist interweaving her biography with her professional progress, documented with the reproduction of her entire oeuvre. From the first photographic series produced in the mid-seventies to the great compositions of the early eighties, up until the brand new Winter, which the artist has been working on for over ten years: visionary and surreal works, which arise from the meticulous construction of a set that the artist then photographs, in a process that explains the rarefied production of the artist and the peculiarity of her visual path, merging installation, sculpture and photography.
Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature
Enchanting Nature is published on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition presented at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, USA, from September 11 through February 1, 2026. The publication’s text and images expand on the breadth of Skoglund’s artistic practice as a sculptor, installation artist, and photographer. The clash of culture and nature is eternal, an ongoing struggle that characterizes some of humanity’s epic concerns. The conflict between the manmade world and the natural environment and the paradoxes this conflict creates are a central focus in the work of the artist. This dialogue exists behind a facade of lush color and form that defines Skoglund’s distinctive, dream-like images. Her work expresses reality as perception, a form of psychological truth. In the visual turmoil of the compositions there is a striking sense of urgency and familiarity. In this chaos, as if gasping for breath, Skoglund’s work is about drowning in the super-saturated consciousness of contemporary life. Enchanting Nature includes the artist’s seminal installations—Revenge of the Goldfish and Radioactive Cats—alongside the never-before exhibited installation, Fresh Hybrid, from 2008. Both the publication and exhibition Enchanting Nature showcase work from throughout the artist’s career, emphasizing ongoing themes in her art including nature, the environment, and interspecies kinship. Skoglund’s recent series, The Outtakes, revisits the artist’s prior photoshoots to recover alternative shots originally rejected as mistakes.
Sandy Beaches as Ecosystems
What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.

Sandy was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history after Katrina, but the waters had barely receded from the Jersey coast when massive efforts began to “Restore the Shore.”Why do people build in areas open to repeated natural disasters? And why do they return to these areas in the wake of major devastation? Drawing on a variety of insightsfrom environmental sociology, Superstorm Sandy answers these questions as it looks at both the unique character of the Jersey Shore and the more universal ways that humans relate to their environment.Diane C. Bates offers a wide-ranging look at the Jersey Shore both before and after Sandy, examining the manyfactors—such as cultural attachment, tourism revenues, and governmental regulation—that combined to create a highly vulnerable coastal region. She explains why theShore is so important to New Jerseyans, acting as a key cultural touchstone in a state that lacks a central city or even a sports team to build a shared identity among thestate’s residents. She analyzes post-Sandy narratives about the Jersey Shore that trumpeted the dominance of human ingenuity over nature (such as the state’s “Stronger than the Storm” advertising campaign) or proclaimed a therapeutic community (“Jersey Strong”)—narratives rooted in emotion and iconography, waylaying any thought of the near-certainty of future storms. The book also examines local business owners, politicians, real estate developers, and residents who have vested interests in the region, explaining why the Shore was developed intensively prior to Sandy, and why restoration became an imperative in the post-storm period.Engagingly written and insightful, Superstorm Sandy highlights the elements that compounded the disaster on the Shore, providing a framework for understanding such catastrophes and preventing them in the future.

Police in Newtown, Connecticut, were told years before Adam Lanza's 2012 killing spree that he planned to carry out a massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. That is just one of the revelations in this batch of documents the FBI has released. These roughly 1,000 pages of heavily redacted documents show that in 2008, a man told police he'd heard Lanza say he planned to kill students at Sandy Hook, along with his mother. When the man went to the cops with what he'd learned, they told him that "Lanza's mother owned the guns and that there was nothing NPD could do about it," according to an FBI file.It wasn't the only brush law enforcement allegedly had with Lanza before he went on a rampage in Newtown, killing his mother and fatally shooting 20 children and six staffers at Sandy Hook Elementary. In an interview conducted two days after the shooting, Lanza's neighbors told the FBI that Nancy Lanza once said her son had hacked into a government computer when he was a high school freshman. Lanza's mother told the neighbors that agents from the FBI and CIA came to their house afterward, and that she had to convince them her son was simply bright--that he was "challenging himself to see if he could hack into a government system.""The authorities told Nancy that if her son was that smart he could have a job with them one day," one document reads. The run-in occurred years before the Sandy Hook massacre; Lanza was 20 when he committed the killings. This trove of FBI files told the FBI, Lanza was apparently fascinated by mass shootings and killings. The documents show he used screen names referring to infamous school shooters, and "devoted almost all of his Internet activity to researching and discussing" mass murders.According to one FBI document, "Lanza was working on a list, or spreadsheet, meticulously documenting the details of hundreds of spree killings and mass murders."The FBI documents, which were released due to Freedom of Information Act requests, shed more light on the psyche of a man who committed one of the worst mass shootings in American history. The release comes just weeks after another gunman, Stephen Paddock, fatally shot 58 people in Las Vegas--a killer whose motive investigators are still trying to pin down.
