"This vignette of local southern history . . . recounts Renfroe's career as sheriff of Sumter County for a little more than two years, followed by six years of bizarre activities as a fugitive from justice before being lynched in July 1886. . . . He led the local Ku Klux Klan in 1868-69, participated in the Meridian riot of 1871, and took part in the killing of two active Republicans, one white and one black, in 1874. Rumors attributed other slayings to this violence-prone man who in 1867 had fled another county after killing his brother-in-law. . . . The story clearly illustrates the violent tactics of the redemption process."--Journal of American History

Revealing episodes in the life of the elusive writer, as told by acquaintancesThis book collects reminiscences by contemporaries, friends, and associates of Stephen Crane that illuminate the life of this often misunderstood and misrepresented writer. Although Crane is widely regarded as a major American author, conclusions about his life, work, and thought remain obscure due to the difficulties in separating fact from fiction. His first biographer recorded mostly vague impressions and, to mythologize his subject, invented a multitude of the episodes and letters used in his account of Crane’s life. Subsequent biographies were either cursory summations or compendiums of verifiable facts. Crane himself was both reclusive and mercurial, protective of his inner life while projecting a variety of personae to suit others. A flamboyant personality and close friend of writers such as William Dean Howells, Henry James, and Joseph Conrad, Crane made telling impressions on his contemporaries. They often constitute the best assessments of Crane’s own personality and work. The 75 reminiscences gathered here offer a much-needed account of Crane’s life from a variety of viewpoints, as well as important information about the contributors themselves.
Stephen Smale: The Mathematician Who Broke the Dimension Barrier

Stephen Smale: The Mathematician Who Broke the Dimension Barrier

Steve Batterson

American Mathematical Society
2012
nidottu
In 1957 Stephen Smale startled the mathematical world by showing that, in a theoretical sense, it is possible to turn a sphere inside out. A few years later, from the beaches of Rio, he introduced the horseshoe map, demonstrating that simple functions could have chaotic dynamics. His next stunning mathematical accomplishment was to solve the higher-dimensional Poincare conjecture, thus demonstrating that higher dimensions are simpler than the more familiar three. In 1966 in Moscow, he was awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics. Smale's vision and influence extended beyond mathematics into two vastly different realms. In 1965 in Berkeley, he initiated a program with Jerry Rubin of civil disobedience directed at ending the Vietnam War. And as a mineral collector, he accumulated a museum-quality collection that ranks among the finest in the world. Despite these diverse accomplishments, Smale's name is virtually unknown outside mathematics and mineral collecting. One of the objectives of this book is to bring his life and work to the attention of a larger community. There are few good biographies of mathematicians. This makes sense when considering that to place their lives in perspective requires some appreciation of their theorems. Biographical writers are not usually trained in mathematics, and mathematicians do not usually write biographies. Though the author, Steve Batterson, is primarily a mathematician, he has long been intrigued by the notion of working on a biography of Smale. In this book, Batterson records and makes known the life and accomplishments of this great mathematician and significant figure in intellectual history.

The first book to focus on the solo residential work of the visionary interior decorator Stephen Sills. Simultaneously classical and modern, Stephen Sills’s design work is a dialogue between past and present. Filled with luxurious fabrics, furnishings from across centuries, and unusual finishes, his work is polished, seemingly effortless, and quietly rich, with a muted color palette that serves as a brilliant foil for modern art. In this striking, meditative volume, the follow-up to his best-selling book Dwellings, Sills presents sixteen breathtaking homes, gorgeously photographed by the legendary François Halard, in locations as varied as a penthouse on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, a modern Aspen retreat, an estate on the North Shore of Long Island, and his own country house in Bedford, New York (dubbed the "chicest house in America" by Karl Lagerfeld). Common to them all is a sense of atmosphere, point of view, and soul—the sense of a master craftsman at work.

Stephen Sills is renowned for his ability to design not just innovative and beautiful rooms but to establish an all-pervading atmosphere of luxury and calm. Yet the homes he creates are always practical and up to date. He knows that the desire for comfort, functionality, and convenience are constants, but he also understands that the quest for beauty, serenity, and refinement is paramount, and in our ever more frantic and disruptive world only more rare and precious. In his new book, he details all the elements that go into bringing to fruition his harmonious, even poetic vision of living as a creative act. The book serves as an invaluable resource for any design lover or student. It covers the evolution of Sill s style, in many cases honed on numerous projects for the same client, from renovations of historic buildings to ground-up new construction. The designer discusses how he educates his eye, discovers new artisans, and keeps abreast of trends, technology, and material innovations. Plus he reveals some of his favourite resources, from little known foreign auction houses to the discount racks of major American home-furnishing chains. The array of stunning rooms is backed by practical information, and hard-won wisdom gained as Sills career expanded from the design of his own iconic Manhattan studio apartment to vast estates across the United States and in Europe.

The first major retrospective of the preeminent Greek-born American artist, who was a pioneer in the use of neon in the realm of fine art. Prolific multimedia artist Stephen Antonakos (1926 2013) is best known for his resplendent abstract neon sculptures instantly recognizable for their vibrant colors and crisp geometry. Along with well-known artists Lucio Fontana, Bruce Nauman, Keith Sonnier, and his compatriot Chryssa, Antonakos brought new perceptual and formal possibilities to the medium of neon. This comprehensive book comprises Antonakos s diverse output of neon, canvases, drawings, travel collages, chapels, and gold works, all of which reflect an abiding concern with illumination, incomplete geometric shapes, and an almost mystical spirituality that is manifest throughout his oeuvre, from his overtly religious pieces to his playful assembled collages from his trips to Greece. His later pieces feature neon lights placed behind painted or gold-leaf panels, often bathing the surfaces and the surrounding space in gold halos like Byzantine icons, a tradition that has long fascinated this extraordinary artist. Author David Ebony provides research on Antonakos as a central figure in the international avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s. He also discusses the artist s Greek heritage and legacy, as well as the spiritual and mystical aspects of his later works.
Stephen Andrews POV

The work of Stephen Andrews has long mediated the successive crises of the contemporary world, exploring conflict, social change, and identity. For more than a decade, Andrews confronted the AIDS epidemic personally and artistically. Later, his work registered the impact of the attacks of September 11, 2001, the subsequent "War on Terror," the financial crash of 2008, and a new wave of global protests, from those surrounding the 2010 G20 summit in Toronto to those associated with the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring. Embedding, layering, and erasing meaning, Andrews's work creates a triangle, where meaning resides between the process of painting (magical and sensuous), the represented image (a chronicle of fragility and resilence), and the invitation to the viewer (to look carefuly and engage). Published to coincide with a major exhibition opening at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Stephen Andrews POV provides a comprehensive overview of the last fifteen years of Andrews's work, a time when painting has emerged as his primary area of inquiry alongside a multifaceted approach to production that has resulted in drawings, photographs, animations, videos, installations, ceramics, and ephemera.

Stephen Shore: Elements is inspired by the Eakins Press Foundation's celebrated debut publication, Walker Evans' Message from the Interior (1966), gathering images from across Evans' career. As with that book, the photographs of Stephen Shore (born 1947) have been carefully selected to represent the poetry of his approach to the world through photographs. The 24 images (16 color and 8 black and white), from the last of his work with the 8x10 inch view camera, range in location from New York's Hudson Valley to the Yucatan, Italy, Texas, Israel and Scotland. As the book's title suggests, what connects these photographs are the elemental resonances of the earth, humanity and time. From his early days as a teenager at Andy Warhol's Factory and his 1971 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (at the time only the second one-person show the museum had ever mounted of a photographer) to his celebrated Uncommon Places (1982), to his current pioneering use of social media platforms and print-on-demand books, Shore has not for a moment let up on his mission to challenge the norms of the photographic medium. In Stephen Shore: Elements, the Eakins Press Foundation extends its historically important embrace of work by individual artists that represents the highest standard of human achievement in our society.

For 30 years, Stephen Prina (born 1954) has enjoyed a simultaneous career as a visual artist and as an acclaimed musician, both under his own name and with The Red Krayola. Having kept his artistic interests separate from his musical pursuits for decades, Prina has now begun to synthesize the two endeavors. Presenting recent work in multiple media alongside his music for the first time, Modern Movie Pop pairs an artist-designed booklet, documenting his exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis, with a live audio recording of the world premiere of his latest concerto, "Concerto for Modern Movie, and Pop Music for Ten Instruments and Voice"--a complex amalgam of his own pop songs and soundtracks. For this exhibition, Prina achieved the dovetailing of his art and music by suspending richly painted monochrome window blinds behind a carpeted video lounge, creating a "movable stage spectacle."

A subversive portrait of Beverly Hills in a gorgeous leporello format This leporello publication presents Brooklyn-based photographer Stephen Hilger’s (born 1975) color photographs of service alleys and the backside of houses separating the public from the private in the affluent suburb of Beverly Hills, California—a more anomalous view of the place by depicting the physical and symbolic spaces behind the homes of the area’s wealthy residents. Eva Díaz has written that Hilger’s emphasis suggests that “Beverly Hills is actually two cities, a ‘front’ city of impeccably maintained homes and a ‘back’ city that covertly services the front illusion. Hilger photographed their graffiti, security signage, crammed garbage cans, unaesthetic car parks and overgrown vegetation; the maintenance staff who work nearby; and the alleys’ most indelible feature, narrow, high walls that denote a claustrophobic refusal of inspection.” In the Alley features 22 panoramic photographs in a leporello-folded format so the reader can leaf through the photographs or expand the book-object for display. An essay by novelist Matthew Specktor maps out the significance of Hilger’s alley views in the context of personal histories and Hollywood stories. In a conversation, Hilger and photographer James Welling discuss their respective practices.
