Visuality and Spatiality in Virginia Woolf’s Fiction

Visuality and Spatiality in Virginia Woolf’s Fiction

Savina Stevanato

This book offers an interpretative key to Virginia Woolf’s visual and spatial strategies by investigating their nature, role and function. The author examines long-debated theoretical and critical issues with their philosophical implications, as well as Woolf’s commitment to contemporary aesthetic theories and practices. The analytical core of the book is introduced by a historical survey of the interart relationship and significant critical theories, with a focus on the context of Modernism. The author makes use of three investigative tools: descriptive visuality, the widely debated notion of spatial form, and cognitive visuality. The cognitive and remedial value of Woolf’s visual and spatial strategies is demonstrated through an inter-textual analysis of To the Lighthouse, The Waves and Between the Acts (with cross-references to Woolf’s short stories and Jacob’s Room). The development of Woolf’s literary output is read in the light of a quest for unity, a formal attempt to restore parts to wholeness and to rescue Being from Nothingness.
Individualisierung Und Flexibilisierung Der Arbeit

It is estimated that windows in office buildings are responsible for one third of energy used for their heating and cooling. Designing window shading that balances often contradictory goals of preventing excessive heat gains in hot periods, without compromising beneficial heat gains in cold periods or visual comfort in indoor spaces of modern buildings with highly glazed facades, is an interesting multi-objective optimisation problem that represents an active research topic in the field of building energy and daylighting. Window overhangs are the simplest and most traditional shading devices that are easy to install, highly cost-effective, require low or no maintenance and offer unobstructed views outside. This book provides a review of overhang design methods for optimal thermal and daylighting performance. It starts with a historical overview of methods based on solar positions and shading masks. Next it discusses current research methodology, including shading calculation methods, ways of quantifying thermal and daylighting overhang effectiveness and the use of multi-objective optimisation approaches, together with the case studies that employ them. It further covers methods for designing innovative overhang types such as NURBS outlined overhangs and PV integrated dynamic overhangs. The appendix classifies published overhang case studies according to major climate type and latitude of their locations. As such, the book presents a valuable resource for understanding subtle nuances of interaction between solar radiation, shading devices and indoor comfort. The intended target audience are building energy researchers interested in optimisation of window shading devices.?

Slobodan Milosevic - Belgrade's tyrant and successor to Tito, 'Butcher of the Balkans' - represents, in many ways, the final shudder of that particularly aggressive 20th-century brand of the creature that was nationalism. His life story is a study in evil: in the 'banality of evil' to use Hannah Arendt's famous phrase. With all the intensity and horror of personal experience, Vidosav Stevanovic, perhaps Serbia's greatest modern writer, tells how Milosevic, a man devoid of any true qualities, climbed his way to the top in slow, silent, murderous steps. But, behind the facade of a grey bureaucrat, is a character of tragic, near-Shakespearean proportions. 'Sloba', as he came to be known, had a loveless childhood, son of a defrocked pastor and school-teacher mother. When Sloba was very young, his father went insane, and killed himself in front of the strange stones to which he preached every Sunday in a nearby field, with a bullet to his temple. Little Miriana, Sloba's future wife and his succour and accomplice in politics, was born in prison, heralding the execution of her own mother, condemned as a Nazi collaborator. Stevanovic, however, has witnessed the greater tragedy: his country's suicide. Part of an ever-diminishing circle of intellectuals who watched as the Milosevic machine destroyed the young nation, trampling over its people and its principles, his is a shattering cri-de-coeur for the victims. It is the bitter personal lament of one man, exiled - as so many of his compatriots - from homeland and history by the Milosevic lie. Milosevic: A People's Tyrant asks how a fractured country and a shattered society could believe in such a man, and raise him to such power. In this raging anatomy of wrong-doing, all are guilty - those who believed, those who followed, those who stood and watched, those who could or would not stop the tragedy from playing out. Vidosav Stevanovic is a Serb himself, and his searing portrait of the Milosevic psychology is a unique testament from within - the biography of a dictator, but also of those who made him. No book will come closer to the man who made Europe shudder, and toppled the Balkans into an inferno out of which it will take years to climb.

Poetics of Arabesk in Turkish-German Cinema

Poetics of Arabesk in Turkish-German Cinema

This book challenges Eurocentric interpretations of the so-called Turkish-German cinema from a transnational perspective, advocating for a comprehensive reevaluation to encourage enriched dialogues. The first part critically assesses dominant media discourses on guest-workers and migrants in the historiography of Turkish-German cinema, arguing for a shift from traditional identity-focused narratives to a broader exploration of shared emotions. The second part explores Arabesk, which, while originating as a hybrid musical genre, has evolved into a significant cultural force encompassing a range of emotional phenomena. Arabesk embodies the visceral, often painful expressions of migration and dislocation, characterized by a profound emotional intensity. It articulates a painful passion and longing for the homeland left behind, providing an invaluable method for understanding aesthetic nuances of Turkish-German films. Arabesk serves as an analytical tool for deconstructing cinematic expressions, revealing complex emotional ties, and cultivating a feeling of familiarity through the dynamic circulation and exchange of cultural media. Thus, Arabesk's poetics significantly shape transnational cinema practices and contribute to global cinema discourse.

What does comedy look like when the wrong punchline can land you in jail?Humor has long been a vital, if underrecognized, component of Tibetan life. In recent years, alongside well-publicized struggles for religious freedom and cultural preservation, comedians, hip-hop artists, and other creatives have used zurza, the Tibetan art of satire, to render meaningful social and political critique under the ever-present eye of the Chinese state. Timothy Thurston's Satirical Tibet offers the first-ever look at this powerful tool of misdirection and inversion. Focusing on the region of Amdo, Thurston introduces the vibrant and technologically innovative comedy scene that took shape following the death of Mao Zedong and the rise of ethnic revival policies. He moves decade by decade to show how artists have folded zurza into stage performances, radio broadcasts, televised sketch comedies, and hip-hop lyrics to criticize injustices, steer popular attitudes, and encourage the survival of Tibetan culture. Surprising and vivid, Satirical Tibet shows how the ever-changing uses and meanings of a time-honored art form allow Tibetans to shape their society while navigating tightly controlled media channels.Open access edition DOI: 10.6069/9780295753126

Painting Thangkas on the Tibetan Plateau

Artists navigate faith, commerce, and gender as thangkas thrive beyond traditionXue Ming offers a rare and deeply researched look into the lives of Rebgong thangka painters, whose sacred art is at once devotional, commercial, and political. Rebgong, a major center of thangka painting since at least the eighteenth century, has long been a site of artistic and religious significance. But in contemporary China, thangkas exist within multiple, sometimes conflicting, markets. Tibetan communities near and far continue to commission these intricate paintings for ritual use, while the Chinese state promotes them as folk art and a national heritage commodity. At the same time, a growing number of non-Tibetan patrons seek thangkas for their religious efficacy—the very quality often elided in official narratives.Bringing together over a decade of ethnographic research, Xue illuminates the complex intersections of artistic tradition, state narratives, and shifting economies Rebgong artists must negotiate. She gives particular attention to female thangka painters, who were only allowed to paint beginning in the twenty-first century, and who continue to face cultural and market constraints unique to their gender. The book challenges assumptions about commodification, showing that rather than diminishing the religious value of thangkas, the market can serve as a platform for painters to assert their faith, preserve their cultural traditions, and establish their artistic authority.Blending anthropology, material religion, and art history, Painting Thangkas on the Tibetan Plateau reveals the evolving social life of Tibetan sacred art in the twenty-first century.
