In this collection of new and selected poems, Sybil Pittman Estess takes readers on an intensely personal journey, a deep exploration of life in contemporary America. "These are poems of witness," says 2008 Texas Poet Laureate Larry Thomas. "...of witness to a life fully lived, of witness to birth, friendship, death, and the unforgiving pain of loss; and of witness to a world rife with the wounds of global warming, the violence of guns, yet a world still teeming with transient beauty."

The Heroine of Cameron DamDecades ago, a vagabond searching through trash outside a Los Angeles publisher's office found a rejected 1929 manuscript. The author, Myra Dietz, wrote it 19 years after she, her brother, and father, were severely wounded by gun-toting thugs who served powerful Midwest lumber barons. News of the Winter, Wisconsin, shootings went nationwide in 1910 and the John Dietz family came to be regarded as national heroes. But by 1929, Myra's memoir sounded like old news to publishers. Then came the Great Depression and an economy unfavorable to publishing new authors. Now, nearly a century after her memoir vanished, the recollections of a young woman caught in the middle of a collision between her steadfast father and the wealthiest-ever lumber baron, Frederick Weyerhaeuser, are finally in print. Learn what happened on the Thornapple River from Myra's own words. The Heroine of Cameron Dam ... ... is Myra's personal recollection of events leading up to and following the 1910 attack on her family's farm by scores of armed woodsmen. ... exposes the graft and corruption that dominated most lumber company towns in 1910. ... illuminates both the pleasure and hardship of living on a Northern Wisconsin farm at the turn of the last century. ... was prepared for publication by Sybil L. Brakken and is available from BadgerValley.com along with Thornapple Girl, James Brakken's fact-based novel about Myra Dietz and her father's stand against the lumber trust.
The "Dixie Book Series" details the deeply haunting and troubled life of a young man in the Deep South during some of history's most trying cultural changes, constantly at war with his own demons and promoted by a sinister man in the ways of running shine, driving fast cars, cavorting with loose women and inadvertently gaining sole insight into a secret, southern-style organized crime network, historically known as the "Dixie Mafia." Always trying to do the right thing by the love of his life; a beautiful, religious and spirited local, he finds himself torn by his angry nature and constantly tormented by his own failures and irresponsible actions
This Element builds on the mainstream theory of attachment and contemporary understanding of the environment of evolutionary adaptedness to address the origin and nature of infant-maternal bond formation. Sections 2 and 3 propose that attachment behaviors for protesting against separation and usurpation were compelled by infants' needs for close and undivided access to a source of breast milk, usually mothers, for three years to counter threats of undernutrition and disease that were the leading causes of infant mortality. Since these attachment behaviors would not have been presented unless they were compelled by maternal resistance, their arising is also attributed to parent-offspring conflict. Section 4 theorizes that the affectional nature of infant-maternal attachment originated within contexts of breastfeeding. Uniform and universal features of exclusive versus complementary breastfeeding, that could entail diverse experiences among multiple caregivers, may have shaped adaptations so that love relationships with mothers differ from those with nonmaternal caregivers.

Originally published in 1977, this book investigates the controversial question as to whether England has seen two industrial revolutions, whether economic changes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England deserve to be distinguished as a period in which an economic ‘revolution’ nearly took place, but eventually aborted. The book considers the changes that took place in the most important industries in the period and estimates the significance of these changes for the overall structure of the English economy. It also assesses the attitudes of the various historians involved in the debate and the nature of the evidence on which their arguments have been based. The combination of critical assessment in the introduction and the evidence of the 34 original documents will guarantee a wide readership of the book among students and teachers of economic history.

There have been significant changes in public attitudes towards surveillance in the last few years as a consequence of the Snowden disclosures and the Cambridge Analytica scandal. This book re-evaluates competing arguments between national security and personal privacy. The increased assimilation between the investigatory powers of the intelligence services and the police and revelations of unauthorised surveillance have resulted in increased demands for transparency in information gathering and for greater control of personal data. Recent legal reforms have attempted to limit the risks to freedom of association and expression associated with electronic surveillance. This book looks at the background to recent reforms and explains how courts and the legislature are attempting to effect a balance between security and personal liberty within a social contract. It asks what drives public concern when other aspects seem to be less contentious. In view of our apparent willingness to post on social media and engage in online commerce, it considers if we are truly consenting to a loss of privacy and how this reconciles with concerns about state surveillance.
Originally published in 1987, this book presented for the first time a unified treatment of English kinship of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This system, far from being a patchwork of historical accidents, has a remarkably logical overall structure, permeating both law and custom. To understand it one must study a wide variety of sources ranging from Parliamentary debates through accounts of contemporary events, cases and incidents to fiction of the day.The work is pertinent to current studies in a number of fields: in history it represents a systematic overview, highlighting new sources of material, while for lawyers it gives a historical context and explanation of ‘family law’, particularly topical for impending English legislation in this area at the time. It collects two centuries of sociological data, and presents social anthropologists with the English system for comparison with systems conventionally studied in the field and with kinship theory. Finally, it provides philosophers with a new arena in which to discuss the nature of explanations of human activities, besides raising fresh questions.

The inspiration for writing poetry came from Sybil's fathers' story, which he wrote after her mother passed. Having left home at 13 she knew very little about her parents and initially was so enthralled with his story that she believed it would make a great book, but as she started to write found that writing in verse flowed much easier. Her siblings were also grateful for the writing of this first poem as they also had no idea of the early part of their fathers' life. From there she found everyday life and happenings around her gave her material to continue writing. Now retired and not having a mind cluttered with work, it never ceases to amaze her how these stories come to her and just must be written, often waking in the night, mulling over new poems, and having to quickly write lines down before trying to get back to sleep again. The local pastor has also tapped into this gift and she is often asked to write a poem to go with a Sunday sermon.
Bodyguard.Sniper.Morally corrupt.I didn't care who I aimed at. You paid me, I pulled the trigger. I sold my skills to the highest bidder, and trust me, I had skills. The Marines trained me to aim a sniper rifle, but life taught me to get the job done-at any expense.Except hostage recovery wasn't on my short list. I didn't give a shit the personal security firm that'd hired me was paying double to get some rich businessman's daughter back without casualties. I didn't negotiate with terrorists. Ever. I had my own plan. Take out anyone in my sights, recover the hostage, and get out. But then I laid eyes on the half-naked, bleeding brunette, and I changed my mind. I was gonna do a hell of a lot more than simply pull the trigger. Now they were gonna find out how fearless a bodyguard could be.*FEARLESS is a sexy new standalone book in the Alpha Bodyguard Series. The Alpha Bodyguard Series: SCANDALOUSMERCILESSRECKLESSRUTHLESSFEARLESSCALLOU
