Walker Evans: Labor Anonymous
Walker Evans shot the photographs collected in Labor Anonymous as an assignment for Fortune magazine, which published a small selection of 20 images in its November 1946 issue, under the title "On a Saturday Afternoon in Detroit." Until now, however, the entire series of 50 photographs has never been reproduced. Evans' extraordinary serial studies of the facial expressions and postures of Detroit workers walking the city's streets are fascinating both as portraiture and as a surprising dimension of his photographic style. Shooting passersby against a plywood backdrop as they crossed his field of vision from distant right to close left (some noticing him, most not), with the light striking and modeling their features, Evans found that what he was creating with these images was "the physiognomy of a nation." This book compiles the photographs, contact sheets, small-version printlets, Evans' annotations to newspaper clippings, drafts for an unpublished text, telegrams and every available print Evans made, along with the Fortune spread as published. Labor Anonymous captures a long-vanished moment in American history, and a crucial project in Evans' oeuvre. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Walker Evans (1903-75) took up photography in 1928. His book collaboration with James Agee, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), which portrayed the lives of three white tenant families in southern Alabama during the Depression, has become one of that era's most defining documents. Evans joined the staff of Time magazine in 1945, and shortly after moved to Fortune magazine, where he stayed until 1965. That year, he became a professor of photography at the Yale University School of Art. Evans died at his home in Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1975.

A woman cultivates a knack for walking on water, but is undermined by her husband's brain, which he removes each night when he returns home from work; a couple overcomes the irksome mischief of the gods; a skeptical dragon wonders what sex is all about: this is the world of Kristiina Ehin. From the 2007 British Poetry Society Popescu prize winner for European poetry in translation: a series of comic, surreal adventures. Kristiina Ehin's quirky voice takes each story directly from the dream state, at times stubborn and resistant, at other times masochistically compliant. Ehin offers up modern folktales in which the very nature of our human identity is at stake-rampant with images and archetypes both new and old, and mediated by the abrupt changes we can only experience in dreams. KRISTIINA EHIN is a highly acclaimed performer of her poetry, prose and drama in Estonian as well as English. This is her first book of stories to be published in the U.S. In her native Estonia, she has published six volumes of poetry, three books of short stories and a retelling of South-Estonian folk tales. She has written plays, as well as poetic radio broadcasts. She has won Estonia's most prestigious poetry prize for Kaitseala-a book of poems and journal entries written during a year spent living as a nature reserve warden on an otherwise uninhabited island off Estonia's north coast. In the UK, she has published six translated books of poetry and three of prose.

As dawn breaks on a summer morning in 1900, Darby Walker, owner of a St. Petersburg, Florida, ferry service, sets out to check on his older brother, Tulley, whose lighthouse across Tampa Bay on Walker's Key has gone dark. The recent death of their father, a ship pilot based on Egmont Key, has been declared a suicide, but Darby knows better, and signs point to Tulley as the murderer.Going back thirty-five years to Darby's birth in Harwich Port, on Cape Cod, Walker's Key explores the bitter sibling rivalry between overly kind, personable Darby and angry, isolated Tulley. While that sibling rivalry unfolds, Darby learns of a sibling rivalry generations earlier in his family, a rivalry that ended in murder. Of pivotal significance is Darby's grandfather, an abolitionist who rescued slaves from a Florida plantation decades earlier and initiated a family tradition of acceptance far broader than the Walker brothers realize when one of them maliciously exposes the other's private encounter. When we arrive back in 1900, Darby works to figure out who has murdered his father. When he learns the killer's identity, he must find the inner strength to bring the killer to justice while also saving himself.

Walker of East and West

Michael James O'Donnell

The first in author Michael O'Donnell's series of historical fiction novels, Walker of East and West follows the struggles and adventures of fictional character, Tom Behan, returning to America after being kidnapped as a boy to China. Behan then makes his through an accurately historical and geographical American West. Kidnapped in Boston and shipped off to China at the age of 14, Tom returns to America as a young man to track down and rejoin with his family in Michigan, who had no idea he was still alive. He arrives in Mackinaw with his wolf-dog, Spot and reunites with his family. Following the murder of his father, Tom decides it is in the best interests of his mother and siblings if he leaves. He then joins a wagon train to head to Oregon where he plans to forge a new life in the American West. The trail west is fraught with nature's fury -- the heat, rain, cold and difficult terrain -- as well as frequent encounters with hostile gangs and unfriendly Indians. Tom's curiosity, ability to learn and adapt, as well as years of experience in China give him a novel advantage in many conflicts and situations throughout this story. From his ability to master foreign languages to his martial arts training, Tom emerges as a steadfast hero to his family and friends. With instinct, patience and clarity, Tom Behan navigates the treachery of hostiles with stealth and intelligence. His struggles are an accurate reflection of those frequently encountered by people of that era in America. Walker of East and West portrays a fictional man in the late 1800's returning to America and learning how to survive and thrive in a mostly untamed American West.
