(…) Jeg har vært åpen om de opplevelsene som har kommet til meg de siste årene. Første gangen jeg kjente at jeg husket noe av glede fra oppveksten, ville jeg ikke være ved det, fordi det gjorde så vondt. Glede kan også være smertefullt når den er en liten del av en stor smerte.” I En mor ved navn Wanda dveler Paal-André Grinderud rundt både gode og dårlige hendelser i oppveksten. Han veksler mellom barndommens hendelser og sine perioder som voksen mann preget av angst og sykdom. Han får fram barnets kjærlighet til og omtanke for en alkoholisert mor og hvordan barndommens tøffe år med ustabile familieforhold kan relateres til senere episoder med fysisk og psykisk sykdom. Dette er likevel ingen trist bok. Forfatteren holder fast ved godheten og kjærligheten, både til livet og menneskene rundt ham. Han kommer til forsoning med sin mor og sin fortid og bestemmer seg for å lukke dette kapitlet i sitt liv og gå videre med løftet hode, uten skyldfølelse og skam.

A woman with a little boy has two suitors: a doctor and a vacuum cleaner salesman. Her husband a famous big-game hunter and adventurer disappeared years ago in the Amazon. She is about to be declared a widow when in he walks khaki breeches puttees and all together with the pilot with whom he crashed in the Amazon valley. It happens to be his birthday an event which all those present had decided to celebrate and for which they had just purchased a cake on the spur of the moment. The cake had been intended for somebody named Wanda June who apparently never got to celebrate at all. The adventurer turns out to be a wild champion of havoc who alienates friends and demolishes violins. He fails in his effort to get his son to shoot him - the boy doesn't believe in that kind of old-fashioned heroism - and then in his own effort to shoot himself. He is a social flop out.
