Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know (1905).edited By: Hamilton Wright Mabie: a selection of the best fairy tales of all time and of all authors
The fairy tale is a poetic recording of the facts of life, an interpretation by the imagination of its hard conditions, an effort to reconcile the spirit which loves freedom and goodness and beauty with its harsh, bare and disappointing conditions. It is, in its earliest form, a spontaneous and instinctive endeavor to shape the facts of the world to meet the needs of the imagination, the cravings of the heart. Classics included in this volume include: One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes, The Magic Mirror, The Enchanted Stag, Hansel and Grethel, The Story of Aladdin, This Story of Ali Baba, The Second Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor, The White Cat, The Golden Goose, The Twelve Brothers, The Fair One With the Golden Locks, Tom Thumb, Blue Beard, Cinderella, Puss In Boots, The Sleeping Beauty In the Wood, Jack and The Bean-Stalk . Hamilton Wright Mabie, (December 13, 1846 - December 31, 1916) was an American essayist, editor, critic, and lecturer. He was born at Cold Spring, N. Y. in 1846. Mabie was the youngest child of Sarah Colwell Mabie who was from a wealthy Scottish-English family and Levi Jeremiah Mabie, whose ancestors were Scots-Dutch. They were early immigrants to New Amsterdam, New Netherland about 1647. Due to business opportunities with the opening of the Erie Canal his family moved to Buffalo, New York when he was approaching school age. At the young age of 16 he passed his college entrance examination, but waited a year before he attended Williams College (1867) and the Columbia Law School (1869). While at Williams, Mabie was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and would serve as the first president of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (formally known as the National Interfraternity Conference He received honorary degrees from his own alma mater, from Union College, and from Western Reserve and Washington and Lee universities. Although he passed his bar exams in 1869 he hated both the study and practice of law. In 1876 he married Jeanette Trivett. In the summer of 1879 he was hired to work at the weekly magazine, Christian Union (renamed The Outlook in 1893), an association that lasted until his death. In 1884, Mabie was promoted to associate editor of the Christian Union and then elected to the Author's Club, whose members included such men of established reputation as George Cary Eggleston, Richard Watson Gilder, Brander Matthews, and Edmund Clarence Stedman. In 1890, a small collection of Mabie's essays which reflected upon life, literature and nature were published as a volume entitled My Study Fire".

Explore the Individual Lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr and their Duel Two captivating manuscripts in one book: Alexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to One of the Founding Fathers of the United States of AmericaAaron Burr: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Aaron Burr and the Most Famous Duel in American HistoryAlexander Hamilton is one of the most extraordinary figures in American history. A deep thinker, a military leader, and a political dynamo, he was George Washington's right-hand man and perhaps the most important figure in the shaping of the Constitution. His policies and practices in government set the United States down a path of commercial wealth and economic stability. His ideas still resonate in the powerful nation he helped create. During his time, Hamilton was a divisive figure. A political extremist who antagonized the conservative parts of the new republic while protecting its former opponents. The man at the heart of the nation's first major sex scandal. A political operator whose actions outraged opponents and eventually led to the duel that cost him his life. It was an extraordinary life, made more extraordinary by Hamilton's origins. He was an outsider, an immigrant from the Caribbean who arrived in New York to make a new life for himself. In doing so, he helped to shape the framework of politics and commerce in America. In retrospect, the amazing thing about his fame is not its recent resurgence, but that it took so long for him to be widely recognized. The first part of this book tells the story of Alexander Hamilton. The story of a nation born in blood, in struggle, and in the dynamism that immigrants could bring. The First Part of this Book Includes Captivating Stories and Facts about Alexander Hamilton'sCaribbean ChildhoodEducation and Quest for Finding WorkMilitary CareerFirst Steps in PoliticsPart in the 1796 Election CampaignTime in Public OfficeLife After the TreasuryAffair with Maria ReynoldsLegacyFurthermore, Alexander Hamilton also played a big role inThe Constitutional ConventionCreating the Federalist PapersThe Formation of a National BankThe Creation of PartiesBased on his early achievements, Aaron Burr Jr. should have become an obscure but respected figure in American history. An officer in the Continental Army, a high flying lawyer, and an influential politician, his career peak was becoming the third vice president in US history. But after all these achievements, Burr's name is now associated with corruption and cruelty. He killed a man in an illegal duel while in office, and interest in that man, Alexander Hamilton, has revived Burr's reputation as one of history's villains. It was a reputation earned not just through the duel, in which he killed one of the brightest lights in the political firmament, but through a treasonous conspiracy after leaving the vice presidency. Who was Aaron Burr? What drove him to such achievements and such failures? And how did a respected politician become a publicly reviled villain? Pick up this book now to find out. Hamilton County, Ohio Burial Records, Volume 9, Part A: Union Baptist African American Cemetery
The Union Baptist Church, founded in 1831, is the oldest African American Baptist church in Ohio. Here, published for the first time, the thousands of burial listings in this volume were abstracted from the church's records for the years 1884 to 1970. No written records are known prior to 1884. Six maps show the location of the cemetery plots. There are over 30,000 burial listings recorded here. To make this huge amount of information more manageable, the editors have separated, out of nearly a century covered by the book, six smaller segments of years. The segments range from seven to twenty-one years, and all the names recorded within each segment are alphabetized. Each entry includes, when available, first and last names of the deceased, birth place, age, date and place of death, marital status and names of kindred. All the information is clearly set forth and easy to read. Some entries include an extra notation with information such as occupation and residence. Where the place of death was in Cincinnati, the name of the hospital is given. The information in this two-volume collection also provides an interesting overview of certain historic changes occurring in America. South to North migration patterns stemming from Cincinnati's role as a link in the "Underground Railroad" or the hardships of the Great Depression, for example, can be confirmed by the place of birth listing. A supplement includes a large list of names not found in the record books but found in the cemetery, with locations of grave sites and dates of interment. There is also a list of veterans buried in this cemetery according to courthouse records but not found in the church's record books. A surname index buried within the entries is also included.
