Ben Jonson

David Riggs

Harvard University Press
1989
nidottu
Ben Jonson's contemporaries admired him above all other playwrights and poets of the English Renaissance. He was the “great refiner” who alchemized the bleakest aspects of everyday life into brilliant images of folly and deceit. He was also a celebrated reprobate and an ambitious entrepreneur. David Riggs illuminates every facet of this extraordinary career, giving us the first major biography of Jonson in over sixty years. The story of Jonson's life provides a broad view of the literary procession in early modern England and the milieu in which Elizabethan drama was produced. Beginning as a journeyman actor, Jonson was soon a novice playwright; his first important play was staged in 1598, with Shakespeare in the cast. He was by turns the self-styled leader of a literary elite, a writer of court masques, the first dramatist to publish his own Works, a royal pensioner, and a genteel poet. As Jonson transformed himself from an artisan into a gentleman, his need to transcend his class origins led him to murder, to his notorious quarrels with Thomas Dekker, John Marston, and Inigo Jones, and to his lifelong rivalry with Shakespeare. Riggs traces the roots of Jonson's aggressiveness back to the turmoil of his childhood and adolescence. He offers new and convincing accounts of Jonson's latent hostility toward his bricklayer stepfather, his reckless marriage to Anne Lewis, and his conflicted relationships with his children. This vivid portrait synthesizes six decades of scholarship and new historical evidence. Sixty halftones beautifully illustrate the story and capture the spirit of the age. With Riggs' original interpretations of Jonson's masterpieces and lesser known works, Ben Jonson: A Life will prove the standard account of this complex man's life and works for many years to come.
Ben Jerry's Double Dip

Ben Jerry's Double Dip

Jerry Greenfield; Ben Cohen

Simon Schuster

pokkari
Commercial success need not come at the cost of human value. Just ask Ben and Jerry, whose first ice cream shop in an abandoned Vermont gas station grew into a $160 million business. Yet Ben & Jerry continue to use the power of business to change the world. With its seemingly wacky antics, controversial social and political stands, and iconoclastic corporate policies, the company that's come to embody socially responsible business has drawn the scepticism of business analysts, the criticism of media cynics - and the amazement- and ultimately, the respect- of the business world and the people in it. As Ben and Jerry explain in DOUBLE-DIP, they haven't always known exactly what they were doing, but they've always known why they were doing it. There's a method to their madness; that method is what they call 'values-led business.' BEN & JERRY'S DOUBLE-DIP explains what values-led business is, why it's the best model for business today, and how anyone who owns, works for, invests in, or shops with a company can help make it a socially responsible business.

The story of Ben is fiction, but it could be the story of more than one jazz musician who grew up in the twenties. Using the artdeco style of the period, Rachel Isadora not only captures the poignancy and yearning of a youthful talent, but in page after page of striking art seems to convey the very sound of music.A virtuoso performance for picture book readers of all ages to enjoy.

Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity

Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity

Laura Katzman

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRESS

A richly illustrated new exploration of the painting, photography, and illustration of the politically progressive American artist Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity offers a fresh and wide-ranging account of the work of Ben Shahn (1898–1969), a Jewish immigrant from Russian-controlled Lithuania who became one of America’s most prominent and prolific “social viewpoint” artists from the Great Depression through the Vietnam War.Revealing why Shahn remains so relevant today, the book examines his commitment to progressive political causes, from combating fascism to fighting for civil rights. Incorporating international perspectives, it investigates his World War II poster art, labor-related work, and engagement in postwar artistic debates. It brings new insights to Shahn’s social realist and documentary styles and their evolution into allegorical, lyrical, and often abstract idioms that embrace the philosophical and the spiritual. And it demonstrates the underappreciated complexity of Shahn’s layered visual language and how he experimented with modernist conceptual strategies—often involving photography—to create his paintings, murals, drawings, prints, posters, illustrated books, and commercial designs.Shahn’s guiding credo—formulated in the Cold War—asserted that nonconformity was the precondition for all significant art and great social change. Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity illuminates why the artist’s work should be seen as a series of “nonconformities” driven by his steadfast dedication to social justice and humanistic values.Published by the Jewish Museum, New York and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, in association with Princeton University PressExhibition ScheduleThe Jewish Museum, New YorkMay 23–October 12, 2025

Ben Bowen

Ben Bowen

T. Robin Chapman

University of Wales Press
2003
nidottu
When Ben Bowen died, aged twenty-five, in 1903, the Welsh literary establishment predicted his immortality. This book looks at the Bowen phenomenon as a product both of his own view of himself as a great poet and a Wales that fed that assumption. It traces his escape from a miner's life in the Rhondda, his stay in South Africa during the Boer War, his talent for controversy and his growing awareness of his early death. This is the first extended, dispassionate account of the life, work and death of the Treorci-born poet Ben Bowen (1878-1903). Published on the centenary of his death, the work seeks to explain Bowen's short-lived fame and subsequent obscurity. It considers his precocious sense of himself as a poet, the literary, social and religious milieu in which he operated, his desire to use poetry as an escape from humble beginnings, and his awareness from his late teens of his impending death. Through a consideration of the life of this compelling character, Robin Chapman also enhances our understanding of Welsh culture in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian Wales.
Ben-Gurion Against the Knesset

Ben-Gurion Against the Knesset

sidottu
The power struggle between Ben-Gurion and the Knesset was not primarily concerned with who should hold the reins of power, but with the ideals that should lie behind government. Ben-Gurion did not think that the Knesset had the moral backbone required at a historic turning-point in Israeli history, when the character of the nation was being developed; although he conceded that it was capable of dealing with the more mundane administrative tasks. He therefore denied the Knesset the right to take part in the policy-making process, caused a decline in the support of the elite and the general public, encouraged partisanship, and endeavored to reduce competitiveness. Ben-Gurion was so dismissive of the Knesset and its members, that he would not even attend parties at which Knesset members were being given awards.
Ben-Gurion's Political Struggles, 1963-1967
An essential insight into this central figure in the modern history of Israel and Zionism. This important new study explores the years that built up to the Six Day War and details the crucial issues and events the world is still grappling with today. This book traces Daniel Ben-Gurion’s waning years in Israeli politics. After his resignation from the office of prime minister in 1963, the ‘Old Man’ soon lost faith in his self-chose successor, Levi Eshkol, and ceaselessly tried to undermine the latter’s premiership, eventually forming a breakaway party. The events leading up to the Six-Day War in June 1967 caught Ben-Gurion by surprise. During the weeks-long ‘waiting period’ prior to the outbreak of hostilities, he paid little attention to daily security issues. But when war did erupt, he displayed one of his key leadership skills – the ability to formulate an accurate, independent situation assessment. It will be of interest to scholars working in Israeli politics and history, this is a lucid, thoroughly researched account of the sunset years of the driving force behind the Israeli nation-state.

Ben Okri

Robert Fraser

Northcote House Publishers Ltd

nidottu
This first ever full-length study of Ben Okri's life and work is based on twenty years of friendship and close attention to his texts. It argues that his writing is best appreciated against the background of his early exposure to the Nigerian Civil War (1967-70) and his attempts since then to forge a medium of conciliation through literature. "We live by stories", Okri once wrote, "We also live in them". Following him from Lagos to London and from obscurity to recognition, Fraser interprets Okri's successive books as refashionings of his inner and outer narrative space. Okri's fiction, essays and poems beckon us through the shabby but vibrant streets of the strife-ridden metropolis towards a potential city of justice, sincerity and peace.
