Basic Physical Chemistry: The Route To Understanding (Revised Edition)
This elegant book provides a student-friendly introduction to the subject of physical chemistry. It is by the author of the very successful Basic Chemical Thermodynamics and is written in the same well-received popular style. It is concise and more compact than standard textbooks on the subject and emphasises the two important topics underpinning the subject: quantum mechanics and the second law of thermodynamics. Both topics are challenging to students because they focus on uncertainty and probability. The book explains these fundamental concepts clearly and shows how they offer the key to understanding a wide range of chemical phenomena including atomic and molecular spectra, the structure and properties of solids, liquids and gases, chemical equilibrium and the rates of chemical reactions. This revised edition has enabled improvements and corrections to be made.

This widely acclaimed text, now in its sixth edition and translated into many languages, continues to present a clear, simple and concise introduction to chemical thermodynamics. An examination of equilibrium in the everyday world of mechanical objects provides a starting point for an accessible account of the factors that determine equilibrium in chemical systems. This straightforward approach leads students to a thorough understanding of the basic principles of thermodynamics, which are then applied to a wide range of physical chemical systems. The book also discusses the problems of non-ideal solutions and the concept of activity, and provides an introduction to the molecular basis of thermodynamics. Over six editions, the views of teachers of the subject and their students have been incorporated. Reference to the phase rule has been included in this edition and the notation has been revised to conform to current IUPAC recommendations. Students taking courses in thermodynamics will continue to find this popular book an excellent introductory text.

This widely acclaimed text, now in its fifth edition and translated into many languages, continues to present a clear, simple and concise introduction to chemical thermodynamics. An examination of equilibrium in the everyday world of mechanical objects provides the starting point for an accessible account of the factors that determine equilibrium in chemical systems. This straightforward approach leads students to a thorough understanding of the basic principles of thermodynamics, which are then applied to a wide range of physico-chemical systems. The book also discusses the problems of non-ideal solutions and the concept of activity, and provides an introduction to the molecular basis of thermodynamics.Over five editions, the views of teachers of the subject and their students have been incorporated. The result is a little more rigour in specifying the dimensions within logarithmic expressions, the addition of more worked examples and the inclusion of a simple treatment of the molecular basis of thermodynamics. Students on courses in thermodynamics will continue to find this popular book an excellent introductory text.

This biography provides a concise, accurate, and lively account of one of the best known yet least understood figures of the Civil War, Robert E. Lee, depicting him as a human being instead of a legend, making him accessible as a person.Robert E. Lee: A Biography takes one of the best known and least understood figures of the American Civic War down from his pedestal as an iconic, legendary hero and transforms him into a human being that 21st-century readers can easily relate to. Author Brian Melton clearly separates fact from the idealized lore and fiction created after the Civil War by members of what has been termed "the Lee cult." Through the book's thorough, clear, and accessible presentation, and its inclusion of accurate historical details—for example, Lee's status as an incurable flirt—General Lee becomes a fascinating and compelling mortal man.Intended for both high school students and the general public, this biography will offer a thorough and unbiased examination of Lee's life and military career. Readers will be able to clearly trace the steps that led Lee to prominence—both before and during the Civil War—and discover how his actions helped shape the American military.

Brian L. Johnson's remarkable biography of W.E.B. Du Bois describes the evolution of religious views from Du Bois's birth until his resignation as editor of Crisis magazine in 1934. W.E.B. Du Bois: Toward Agnosticism, 1868-1934 traces Du Bois's mounting skepticism through his earliest church experiences to his sociological training in Berlin culminating with his writings in Crisis magazine. Johnson argues that despite Du Bois's frequent use of Protestant religious rhetoric, the mature Du Bois was a critic of African American religious organizations and their leaders, and a scientifically oriented agnostic who did not adhere to any religious orthodoxy.

The remarkable story of the spiritual search of one of Michigan’s most successful entrepreneurs.John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age follows thespiritual sojourn of John E. Fetzer, a Michigan business tycoon. Born in 1901 and living most of his life in Kalamazoo, Fetzer parlayed his first radio station into extensive holdings in broadcasting and other enterprises, leading to his sole ownership of the Detroit Tigers in 1961. By the time he died in 1991, Fetzer had been listed in Forbes magazine as one of the four hundred wealthiest people in America. And yet, business success was never enough for Fetzer—his deep spiritual yearnings led him from the Christianity of his youth to a restless exploration of metaphysical religions and movements ranging from Spiritualism, Theosophy, Freemasonry, UFOology, and parapsychology, all the way to the New Age as it blossomed in the 1980s.Author Brian C. Wilson demonstrates how Fetzer’s quest mirrored those of thousands of Americans who sought new ways of thinking and being in the ever-changing spiritual movements of the twentieth century. Over his lifetime, Fetzer's worldview continuously evolved, combining and recombining elements from dozens of traditions in a process he called ""freedom of the spirit."" Unlike most others who engaged in a similar process,Fetzer’s synthesis can be documented step by step using extensive archival materials, providing readers with a remarkably rich and detailed roadmap through metaphysical America. The book also documents how Fetzer’s wealth allowed him to institutionalize his spiritual vision into a thriving foundation—the Fetzer Institute—whichwas designed to carry his insights into the future in hopes that it would help catalyze a global spiritual transformation.John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age offers a window into the rich and complex history of metaphysical religions in the Midwest and the United States at large. It will be read with interest by those wishing to learn more about this enigmatic Michigan figure, as well as those looking for an engaging introduction into America’s rapidly shifting spiritual landscape.

This is an extensive tome on the history, development and deployment of the Atomic bomb and other nuclear weapons. Like Topsy the original eBook grew and grew, eventually to 1000+ pages. We have covered the original British research into a viable nuclear device aided considerably by refugee scientists from Nazi Europe. We have also covered a profile of all the important people involved in developing and delivery the weapons and how the programme grew, in all countries, to encompass peaceful uses of Atomic energy. We have also covered the evidence of prehistoric and alien involvement in the Nuclear arms race and the Nazi development of what might have been alien technology. The deeper you get into the subject the more fascinating becomes the debate. We hope this provides you with an amazing look at this vitally important subject. In addition to conventional nuclear power and nuclear fission we have also covered the development of Nuclear Fusion. Most scientists argue that this is the future of mankind. Interestingly nuclear powered interplanetary ships have been in space of 50 years I wasn't aware of this and I am sure that most of the readers will not be aware. As a final part of the debate we have also introduced our readers to COLD FUSION. Most scientists argue that this is not part of the Nuclear debate but on the other hand it seems to offer the best future for things like automobiles. Imagine having a car that will run on water - Hydrogen is the most common substance on Earth so there is plenty to go around. Rather than just provide information, we hope these books will encourage the reader to delve deeper and deep into the subject and perhaps become part of this ongoing debate. One of the primary arguments is who actually was responsible for producing the first nuclear weapons and perhaps even more controversial who actually won the war. It is clear that the British development was the most significant and without it the U.S.A. would not have completed their development or be able to drop the bombs on Japan. It is equally clear that the Japanese would probably not have surrendered without it and an invasion of the Japanese homeland would have cost possibly more than 1 million allied lives. It is also clear that Britain was aided by many scientists refugees from Nazi Europe and many were Jewish. It is also clear that the virtual destruction of Germany and Japan lead to their total rebuilding and their eventual rise to preeminence in the Plan't economy. It is equally clear that the U.S.A benefitted enormously from the British empire's demise and thirst for supplies. It is quite clear that Roosevelt did not plan this massive profit but U.S. business engineered the massive profits from the war trade.Who won? Well, the world won overall from Britain's sacrifices. Britain lost enormously and the developing world was set upon a path of amazing growth. Wars always bring loss to many but advantages to many nations and individuals. As this was the biggest war that had ever been it was probably inevitable that the losses and gains would have been equally enormous. The other irritating feature about WW2 history is how the U.S.A. and particularly U.S.A. filmmakers rewrite a great deal of history. I have noticed that the enigma machine was stolen by an American submarine according to American films? Hmmmmm? It is however, comforting to see that the development of modern day computers at Bletchley Park has been acknowledged.
