Loosely autobiographical, Catherine's Pool by poet and short fiction writer Mark N. Brown offers a dive into the deep end as well as a few thoughtful and thought provoking laps in calm water. This, the author's debut collection, includes over a hundred poems and vignettes that recall his youth in the Midwest as well as more sublime general topics such as justice, family, and freewill. While some of the narrative poems lead into short stories, a number of the confessional poems stand alone. With titles such as &'The Blind Man," "Smiling Jack and the Crystal Lady," "Chronicles of the Fox-killer and Sheepherder," and "Aunt Minnie," readers are given a taste of what life is like if it is lived purely and with a honed sense of eternal wonder. For Brown, readers will come to recognize that the water is fine-go ahead, jump in.
This is a story about Catherine, a young girl from a remote area in Sierra Leone. The fourteenth and last child of her parents. It tells of her life from when she was seven years old and moves to Bo, a regional city, to fulfil her dreams of being educated to an early marriage and drudgery and then escaping the country as it descends into civil war. We follow her on her adventures and challenges from when she and her family are refugees in Ghana to her new life in London.
Wife, widow, mother, survivor, the story of the last queen of Henry VIII. Catherine Parr was enjoying her freedom after her first two arranged marriages when she caught the attention of the elderly Henry VIII. The most reluctant of all Henry's wives, she offered to become his mistress rather than submit herself to the dangers of becoming Henry's queen. This only increased Henry's enthusiasm for the vibrant, intelligent young widow and Catherine was forced to abandon her handsome lover, Thomas Seymour, for the decrepit king. She quickly made her role as queen a success, providing Henry VIII with a domestic tranquillity that he had not known since the early days of his first marriage. For Henry, Catherine was a satisfactory choice but he never stopped considering a new marriage, much to Catherine's terror. Catherine is remembered as the wife who survived but, without her strength of character it could have been very different. It was a relief for Catherine when Henry finally died and she could secretly marry Thomas Seymour. Left with no role in government affairs in her widowhood, she retired to the country, spending time at her manors at Chelsea and Sudeley. It was here that her heart was broken by her discovery of a love affair between her stepdaughter, the future Elizabeth I, and her husband. She died in childbirth accusing her husband of plotting her death. Traditionally portrayed as a matronly and dutiful figure, Elizabeth Norton's new biography shows another side to Catherine. Her life was indeed one of duty but, throughout, she attempted to escape her destiny and find happiness for herself. Ultimately, Catherine was betrayed and her great love affair with Thomas Seymour turned sour.
Catherine of Aragon continues to fascinate readers 500 years after she became Henry VIII's first queen. Her life was one of passion and determination, of suffering and hope, but ultimately it is a tragic love story, as circumstances conspired against her. Having lost her first husband, Henry's elder brother Prince Arthur, she endured years of ill health and penury, to make a dazzling second match in Henry VIII. There is no doubt that she was Henry's true love, compatible with him in every respect and, for years, she presided over a majestic court as the personification of his ideal woman. However, Catherine’s body failed her in an age when fertility was a prerequisite of political stability. When it became clear that she could no longer bear children, the king’s attention turned elsewhere, and his once chivalric devotion became resentment. Catherine’s final years were spent in lonely isolation but she never gave up her vision: she was devoted to her faith, her husband and to England, to the extent that she was prepared to be martyred for them. Banished and close to death, she wrote a final letter to her ‘most dear lord and husband’. ‘I pardon you everything... mine eyes desire you above all things.’ The fidelity of this remarkable woman never wavered.
