Charity is home free: her degree under her belt and making a beeline, straight for sunny Ft. Royal, and her sisters, Hope and Faith. Excited to see them, yet having been warned by Hope to watch herself when it came to the disarmingly charming ways of The Kraken, Charity never expected to walk right into the one man to flip all of her switches to the 'on' position before she'd even taken a dozen steps into town.Nothing was everything she liked. Tall, handsome, with a pair of eyes that any woman should swoon over. Just the right mix of tortured bad boy to pique all of her healer's instincts. Charity knew that the men of The Kraken played for keeps; all except, it seemed, for this one. Too bad no one told The Kraken that she played for keeps, too.

The author is an old man, like Fred. He doesn't tweet or twitter or even quack. He spent most of his adult life as an electronic engineer for the FAA and for the Navy. The last 12 years of his career was spent working in his wife's Christian bookstore. He considers those the best years of his life. Fred and Mabel have moved to an assisted living facility. Because of the company's loss of a large sum of money, the facility may be forced to close, and all the folks seek new places to live. Fred is eager to find the lost money, but has no accounting knowledge, so Mabel must step in. Almost all of the folks from the previous books help and in the end there are some romances and a twist in the adventure.
Charity in Truth: Caritas in Veritate

Charity in Truth: Caritas in Veritate

Pope Benedict XVI

Benedict XVI has something for everyone in Charity in Truth--from praising profit to defending the environment, from calling for a role for government in the economy to insisting on the necessity of moral transformation and "gratuitousness" in economic life, from the issue of immigration to the importance of technology. However, he also insists on discernment and the purification of our ideas by faith and reason, in order to temper any immoderate and one-sided enthusiasms. Charity and Truth was expected to be--and is--the Pope's encyclical on "social justice." And indeed "justice" and "rights" find their proper place. But "charity" and truth are shown to be the fundamental principles. Charity is at the heart of the Church's social doctrine, he writes. "Without truth, without trust and love for what is true, there is no social conscience and responsibility, and social action ends up serving private interests and the logic of power". Benedict calls for "integral human development," which promotes "the good of every man and of the whole man", including the spiritual dimension, "the perspective of eternal life". Without this, "human progress in this world is denied breathing-space." What's more, true development requires "openness to life". ""If there is lack of respect for the right to life and a natural death," he writes, "if human conception, gestation and birth are made artificial, if human embryos are sacrificed to research, the conscience of society ends up losing the concept of human ecology and, along with it, that of environmental ecology. It is contradictory to insist that future generations respect the natural environment when our educational system and laws do not help them to respect themselves." With respect to economics, the Pope insists every economic decision has a moral consequence. He avoids the extremes of an unbridled capitalism and socialism. Instead, he holds that "the logic of the market and the logic of the State"--free economic exchange with political oversight and restraint--are not enough to secure human flourishing. There must be a generosity and gratuitousness among citizens and nations that goes beyond economic and political systems. "Charity" is necessary for "justice" to be "justice".Benedict also argues that technology must not be seen as automatically providing solutions to problems, without the need for morality. Nor must man seek to avoid responsibility for overcoming social problems by rejecting technological development as inevitably evil. Benedict insists that man must be humble yet confident that he can, through faith and reason, make true progress in human development.

The withdrawal of black women from field labor in the postwar South is the historical question being addressed with a gender analysis as the theoretical framework. Primary sources used have been drawn from Somerset plantation, North Carolina and Faunsdale plantation, Alabama. This book adds to the literature of women's history, gender studies, black history, and the Reconstruction era of Alabama. It adds to the growing body of knowledge of the way gender relations interact with class and race to influence variations of gender roles for both women and men within different social classes and races. The development of the squad system as an integral phase in the general movement toward single-family-based sharecropping is also explored. By the 1880s, family-based sharecropping was the dominate organization of agricultural labor in the cotton South. Informed by a gender analysis, this dissertation focuses on the immediate postwar decade, 1865 to 1877, on one plantation-based community in Marengo County, Alabama. Faunsdale plantation, the white household and black freedwomen and men, form the community under study. Charity Signs for Herself reveals the persistence of male dominance among black freedmen as evidenced in their gender relations and ranking of squad members.

In 1951, when Sister of Charity Mary Joaquin Bitler was called to Santa Fe, New Mexico to be the Supervisor of Nursing at Santa Fe's antiquated St. Vincent Hospital, she remarked that the 1910 Catholic hospital was surviving on "nerve and hope." Later, as Administrator (1960 - 1976), she was lauded locally and nationally for her achievements in health care and for bringing that care to the poor of New Mexico. Considered by many a brilliant businesswoman, she turned St. Vincent's into a state-of-the art facility in its time, managed by a community corporation. Sister Mary Joaquin's story tells of a very complex personality. A tough hospital administrator, she had many admirers as well as some enemies; a devout nun, she drew strength from her religion to open her heart to the poor and the sick, while she herself suffered a chronic and debilitating illness. In 1977, after succeeding in her goal to build Santa Fe a new and greatly expanded community-owned hospital, Sister Joaquin retreated to a life of contemplation and prayer in a little hermitage in central Mexico. Appalled by the poverty and sickness around her-the distended stomachs of hungry children, the heart-breaking number of infant deaths from dysentery and other parasitic diseases-she opened a small clinic in her hermitage to treat the villagers, most of whom had never seen a doctor or had any access to health care. Her last years were spent living as a hermit in New Mexico's Christ in the Desert Benedictine Monastery until her death in 2003. "Charity's Sister" is a book that will appeal to students of medicine, Southwest history and women's history, as well as being a testament to one woman's profound strength of will, to one who always sought divine guidance in dealing with adversities in her own life and in the many lives she touched.
