I never thought I'd fall for an older man. He's smart. Sexy. Irresistible. Everything I've ever wanted, but I can't have him. He's broken. Guarded. He'll never give me what I need. So why do I still want him?Because I am going to show him how to live again... and how to love.At least, that was the plan.

Liquidator 1969-1970 A Chelsea Memoir

The 1969-70 season was momentous for Chelsea... a campaign that concludes with the Club winning the FA Cup for the first time in its history. It is also a period of awakening for Blues supporter Tommy Walker, a local boy from the World's End whose passion for the team is matched by his love of music and Sophia Fossati, a girl he meets at the Isle of Wight Festival Almost fifty years later, Tommy's health is failing fast and he asks his friend, author Mark Worrall, to write his memoirs. 'Liquidator' sets out Mark's struggle to come to terms with Tommy's situation and outlines how their friendship developed before focussing itself on Chelsea's journey to FA Cup glory with match descriptions so vivid you feel you are at the games cheering on Peter Osgood as he scores in every round of the competition Granular details of Tommy's early life provide a fascinating snapshot of what following the Blues was like, both in the mid-1950s when he first sees Chelsea play at Stamford Bridge, and then later as he attends every match of the 1970 cup run, that culminates in a tempestuous and ultimately triumphant final replay against Leeds United. Vibrant, larger-than-life characters fill the pages as Tommy and his friends weave and bob around London, mingling with Chelsea players and rock stars in long-lost pubs and clubs at a time when man first walked on the moon and 'The Liquidator', a reggae-tinged instrumental with an infernally catchy beat, wormed its way into the consciousness of Blues supporters. The recurring theme of how quickly time passes is never far away as is the yearning for days gone by and those who left this life too early.

In 1972 Leo and Philippa Bernard bought Chelsea Rare Books, a small antiquarian bookshop in the King’s Road, Chelsea, advertised for sale in The Times. The Bernards had no previous experience of bookselling, but Chelsea in the 1970s was a lively place. The stock they acquired with the shop included everything from field sports to embroidery, children’s books, art and modern first editions. In the basement they launched The Beaufort Gallery selling prints and paintings. The young women who joined them as bookselling assistants became friends, often introducing a successor before leaving to marry, have children or move to the country. Philippa Bernard makes light of the hard work she and Leo shared, not to mention the heavy work, handling the books.

We are delighted to bring you our next and latest edition of the 'Magic of Chelsea' 2024.As with our previously published Magic of Chelsea books, this one is also published with those in mind who cannot visit the event but would love to, and keeping in mind those who did visit the show and want to cherish their memories, so we are bringing this book to you.Unlike many other years, the weather was cold, windy, and wet. With so many summer clothes packed and unable to be worn, I went to my favourite store to buy warmer things. We were lucky as our tickets for Chelsea this year were bought later than usual. With the first few days of the opening of Chelsea being wet, our visiting day was at least dry...It was a fun day with lots of happy people enjoying not only the dryer weather but the camaraderie and enjoyment of the moments; the different stands and exhibits were evident. With enthusiasm and excitement filling the air, we were out to have a good time.It was busy with crowds, possibly because there were more people than usual on the previous bad weather days Regardless, with patience and persistence, we achieved our goal of accessing almost a thousand photographs for this latest edition of the 'Magic of Chelsea...'From beautiful floral displays, different flowers, and plants in the Great Pavilion to outstanding pieces of creative sculpture, all were displayed at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.As a lover of art in modern and traditional forms, I marvelled at some interesting sculptures. The use of ovals, rounds, and geometric forms was evident, especially in the work exhibited, and the encouragement shown to young artists still finding their way, as in the work presented by Guruve. While every stand presented a feast of colour, difference, and new, seeing the traditional wildflowers featured on some of the stands and the joy of individual flowers or mass celebrations within the flower colour and different varieties brought to the visitors was stimulating. It is only on reflection and by working on this book that I celebrate the treasured moments spent and the gratitude now felt, and the nostalgia of the time becomes one of life's precious memories. I, too, know that this book, by turning the pages and feasting your eyes on the photographs, will leave you with the feeling of peace, enjoyment, and satisfaction that I have felt during its writing. Please also see our Magic of Chelsea Diary, Notebook, and Calendar; this creates a full set of exciting and different book ideas for cherished gifts.Christine

Now in paperback, this is a fascinating collection of photographs of Chelsea Football Club dating from its early days in 1905 until 1992, painstakingly selected from the Daily Mirror's extensive archive of tens of thousands of images. These photos tell the story of one of Britain's most glamorous and often-controversial football clubs - from Sir Matt Busby's three guest appearances during WWII, to regular matchday visits from Steve McQueen and Raquel Welch during Tommy Docherty's reign in the swinging '60s. There's magnificent photography of star players such as Ron 'Chopper' Harris, the 1971 UEFA Cup Winners Cup side, and David Speedie and Kerry Dixon - the heroes of the '80s revival. If blue is the colour, you'll find it in here.

Climbing the Chelsea Hill is the gripping story of Ken Shellito, the first and only Chelsea manager to enter the job after rising through the ranks at Stamford Bridge. After joining as ground staff at 15, he turned professional in 1957. He played 123 senior games as a full-back and won England honours before a knee injury ended his playing career at age 23. Undeterred, he joined the coaching staff and became first-team manager of Chelsea after 22 years at the club. Later, Ken left the UK to coach and manage in his new home of Malaysia. Sadly, he died there aged 78, in 2018. In this authorised biography, Ken lays bare all the highs and lows of his unique footballing journey. His anecdotes - some harrowing, others hilarious - shine a light on an era when football was all about the teams, their fans and the camaraderie among players. It paints a fascinating portrait of how the game was played at the start of Ken's career and how it evolved into today's commercialised era of glitz and glamour.

‘Underpinned by rigorous academic research, (Martin Cawthorne) has crafted a highly readable narrative which brings to life the characters, events, the dilemmas facing the authorities and the enduring resilience of the Royal Hospital’s Pensioners.’ – General Sir Adrian Bradshaw, KCB, OBE, DL, Governor, Royal Hospital ChelseaIn May 1938 a confidential meeting was held between Officers of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and government departments responsible for civil defence planning. All participants agreed that, should war come, the 500 Chelsea In-Pensioners residing at the Royal Hospital should be evacuated to a place of safety outside London. However, toxic politics and complex logistics meant that, on the outbreak of war in September 1939, only fifty were evacuated, to a country house in Herefordshire. The remainder, many carrying physical and psychological scars from the First World War, sought sanctuary in hastily constructed air-raid shelters and awaited their fate.Using recently uncovered archive material, some stored for decades in an attic at the Royal Hospital, Martin Cawthorne chronicles the story of Chelsea’s old soldiers, once more in the line of fire as they faced the horrors of the London Blitz.

Founded in 1927 'to protect and foster the amenities of Chelsea', the Chelsea Society has, for many years, printed an assortment of essays celebrating all aspects of Chelsea, past and present, at the end of each of its Annual Reports. This selection of the most interesting, begins with an account of the Royal Hospital, by General Sir Clive Liddell, taken from the 1944/45 report, and ends with Richard Ballard's 'Life and Times of Sir Hans Sloane', which appeared in 2003. In between, thirty-five elegant essays add up to make this delightful pot-pourri of a book a lasting keep-sake and celebration of one of London's most attractive boroughs. Elizabeth Longford describes the Chelsea childhood of the first Queen Elizabeth; Peter Quennell tells of the Carlyle's at Cheyne Row; Tom Pocock celebrates the Chelsea Bun House and Gerard Noel tells the scandalous tale of Sir Charles Dilke. Famous residents are recalled, including Bram Stoker, Lily Langtry and Leigh Hunt. A long section describes Chelsea at War and the Borough's world famous art and architecture is remembered by tales of the Chelsea Arts Club, accounts of Walter Greaves, Whistler in Tite Street - even Veronese in the Fulham Road. Chelsea's gardens are not overlooked. There are descriptions of the famous Physic Garden by Allen Paterson, recollections by the head gardener of the Cadogan Estate and Edward Croft-Murray's evocative recreation of Cremorne, the last of London's great Victorian Pleasure Gardens. Designed to be read as a common-place book, with wonderful drawings and illustrations in colour and black and white, Here Is Chelsea will be long-treasured. It is a delightful souvenir for both visitor and resident - indeed anyone who has ever fallen under the spell of this unique and magical place.

"A story of social change and the evolution of a neighbourhood, full of human interest and the richness and sadness of the passing of time - I loved the irrepressible character who combined the skills of barrister, chef and advertising genius, and the poor first owner with her aesthetic aspirations and her artwork - the kind of history we imagine for our houses (but not so fully), assembled from small relics and suggestions." - Margaret Drabble In a vivid blend of history and fiction, Clare Hastings tells the story of a house in London's Little Chelsea - the house in which she lives - and its inhabitants, from 1873, when it was 'topped out', to the 1930s. Detailed in the census records and other sources, these very real residents - ranging from bodice-makers by way of booksellers (and a bigamist) to that glamorous, though unemployed, Irish barrister - are all now long gone, but their footsteps are etched into the floorboards at Finborough Road, and into the imagination of the author. In these pages, Clare Hastings's warmth, humour and compelling storytelling bring them back to life.

Bill Wyman has worked in the London borough of Chelsea on-and-off since joining the Rolling Stones in 1962, and has lived in the area since 1982. Over the past few years, Bill has walked every street of his beloved neighbourhood, photographing anything unusual that caught his eye: bridges, churches, pubs, shops, houses, monuments, decorative wall plaques, blue historical plaques, statues, weather vanes, front doors, street signs and coal hole covers. Alongside his photos, Bill began to research the area thoroughly – its history, its stories, and its residents. Bill Wyman's Chelsea is the result of this work: a comprehensive and informative guide to a London borough steeped in culture and history, as seen through the personal and affectionate lens of a long-standing resident, who himself plays a part in the history of the area. Complete with walking tour itineraries, maps, an A-Z of streets, historical information, over 300 of Bill’s photos and knowledge from an insider; Bill has produced what can confidently be called the ‘Master Book on Chelsea’.

Among the London districts, Chelsea has always held a special charm for residents and visitors alike – spacious and gracious with the River Thames as background, but with a unique history of artists, bohemians and good causes. Twelve chapters tell episodes from this history, based on buildings that mark the stages of change, connecting what can seen on the street with the hidden histories of architects, patrons and the diverse people who have made their lives in and around them. These range from Chelsea Old Church through the churches, military establishments, theatres, restaurants, housing and shops. The spaces between buildings can be as important as the buildings themselves, and Chelsea has had the benefit of landowners with long-term interests in improving the experience of residents and visitors, creating in recent years some exemplary regeneration projects that can act as models for un-obtrusive management of change.
The Little Book of Chelsea
There are few football clubs in the world that attract as much interest in the modern game as Chelsea. Whether it is the latest observations from former coach Maurizio Sarri, his successor Frank Lampard, big-money transfer targets, the style of play or results in Europe, everybody thinks they know what's happening – or at least has an opinion on it. The arrival in 2003 of Russian billionaire tycoon Roman Abramovich as owner turned a glamorous club with a long history of under-achievement, into an international powerhouse. After one championship in 99 years, the Blues have, in a dozen years, won five Premier League titles, plus the UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Europa League titles, five FA Cups and three Football League Cups. The club always was a magnet for well-known names – vaudeville legend George Robey played for the Pensioners in the club's earliest days – and, in the modern era, Stamford Bridge has become home to a dazzling array of world stars. From Ron 'Chopper' Harris and Ken Bates through Ruud Gullit, Roberto Di Matteo and Glenn Hoddle to Jose Mourinho, John Terry, Zola, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, there is no lack of characters to draw on for quotes.
