The Royal Hospital Chelsea at War

The Royal Hospital Chelsea at War

‘Underpinned by rigorous academic research, (Martin Cawthorne) has crafted a highly readable narrative which brings to life the characters, events, the dilemmas facing the authorities and the enduring resilience of the Royal Hospital’s Pensioners.’ – General Sir Adrian Bradshaw, KCB, OBE, DL, Governor, Royal Hospital ChelseaIn May 1938 a confidential meeting was held between Officers of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and government departments responsible for civil defence planning. All participants agreed that, should war come, the 500 Chelsea In-Pensioners residing at the Royal Hospital should be evacuated to a place of safety outside London. However, toxic politics and complex logistics meant that, on the outbreak of war in September 1939, only fifty were evacuated, to a country house in Herefordshire. The remainder, many carrying physical and psychological scars from the First World War, sought sanctuary in hastily constructed air-raid shelters and awaited their fate.Using recently uncovered archive material, some stored for decades in an attic at the Royal Hospital, Martin Cawthorne chronicles the story of Chelsea’s old soldiers, once more in the line of fire as they faced the horrors of the London Blitz.

Founded in 1927 'to protect and foster the amenities of Chelsea', the Chelsea Society has, for many years, printed an assortment of essays celebrating all aspects of Chelsea, past and present, at the end of each of its Annual Reports. This selection of the most interesting, begins with an account of the Royal Hospital, by General Sir Clive Liddell, taken from the 1944/45 report, and ends with Richard Ballard's 'Life and Times of Sir Hans Sloane', which appeared in 2003. In between, thirty-five elegant essays add up to make this delightful pot-pourri of a book a lasting keep-sake and celebration of one of London's most attractive boroughs. Elizabeth Longford describes the Chelsea childhood of the first Queen Elizabeth; Peter Quennell tells of the Carlyle's at Cheyne Row; Tom Pocock celebrates the Chelsea Bun House and Gerard Noel tells the scandalous tale of Sir Charles Dilke. Famous residents are recalled, including Bram Stoker, Lily Langtry and Leigh Hunt. A long section describes Chelsea at War and the Borough's world famous art and architecture is remembered by tales of the Chelsea Arts Club, accounts of Walter Greaves, Whistler in Tite Street - even Veronese in the Fulham Road. Chelsea's gardens are not overlooked. There are descriptions of the famous Physic Garden by Allen Paterson, recollections by the head gardener of the Cadogan Estate and Edward Croft-Murray's evocative recreation of Cremorne, the last of London's great Victorian Pleasure Gardens. Designed to be read as a common-place book, with wonderful drawings and illustrations in colour and black and white, Here Is Chelsea will be long-treasured. It is a delightful souvenir for both visitor and resident - indeed anyone who has ever fallen under the spell of this unique and magical place.

"A story of social change and the evolution of a neighbourhood, full of human interest and the richness and sadness of the passing of time - I loved the irrepressible character who combined the skills of barrister, chef and advertising genius, and the poor first owner with her aesthetic aspirations and her artwork - the kind of history we imagine for our houses (but not so fully), assembled from small relics and suggestions." - Margaret Drabble In a vivid blend of history and fiction, Clare Hastings tells the story of a house in London's Little Chelsea - the house in which she lives - and its inhabitants, from 1873, when it was 'topped out', to the 1930s. Detailed in the census records and other sources, these very real residents - ranging from bodice-makers by way of booksellers (and a bigamist) to that glamorous, though unemployed, Irish barrister - are all now long gone, but their footsteps are etched into the floorboards at Finborough Road, and into the imagination of the author. In these pages, Clare Hastings's warmth, humour and compelling storytelling bring them back to life.

Bill Wyman has worked in the London borough of Chelsea on-and-off since joining the Rolling Stones in 1962, and has lived in the area since 1982. Over the past few years, Bill has walked every street of his beloved neighbourhood, photographing anything unusual that caught his eye: bridges, churches, pubs, shops, houses, monuments, decorative wall plaques, blue historical plaques, statues, weather vanes, front doors, street signs and coal hole covers. Alongside his photos, Bill began to research the area thoroughly – its history, its stories, and its residents. Bill Wyman's Chelsea is the result of this work: a comprehensive and informative guide to a London borough steeped in culture and history, as seen through the personal and affectionate lens of a long-standing resident, who himself plays a part in the history of the area. Complete with walking tour itineraries, maps, an A-Z of streets, historical information, over 300 of Bill’s photos and knowledge from an insider; Bill has produced what can confidently be called the ‘Master Book on Chelsea’.

Among the London districts, Chelsea has always held a special charm for residents and visitors alike – spacious and gracious with the River Thames as background, but with a unique history of artists, bohemians and good causes. Twelve chapters tell episodes from this history, based on buildings that mark the stages of change, connecting what can seen on the street with the hidden histories of architects, patrons and the diverse people who have made their lives in and around them. These range from Chelsea Old Church through the churches, military establishments, theatres, restaurants, housing and shops. The spaces between buildings can be as important as the buildings themselves, and Chelsea has had the benefit of landowners with long-term interests in improving the experience of residents and visitors, creating in recent years some exemplary regeneration projects that can act as models for un-obtrusive management of change.
The Little Book of Chelsea
There are few football clubs in the world that attract as much interest in the modern game as Chelsea. Whether it is the latest observations from former coach Maurizio Sarri, his successor Frank Lampard, big-money transfer targets, the style of play or results in Europe, everybody thinks they know what's happening – or at least has an opinion on it. The arrival in 2003 of Russian billionaire tycoon Roman Abramovich as owner turned a glamorous club with a long history of under-achievement, into an international powerhouse. After one championship in 99 years, the Blues have, in a dozen years, won five Premier League titles, plus the UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Europa League titles, five FA Cups and three Football League Cups. The club always was a magnet for well-known names – vaudeville legend George Robey played for the Pensioners in the club's earliest days – and, in the modern era, Stamford Bridge has become home to a dazzling array of world stars. From Ron 'Chopper' Harris and Ken Bates through Ruud Gullit, Roberto Di Matteo and Glenn Hoddle to Jose Mourinho, John Terry, Zola, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard, there is no lack of characters to draw on for quotes.

Andy Warhol’s The Chelsea Girls had its premiere at the Film-Maker’s Cinémathèque on 15 September 1966. It sold out a 200-seat theatre and went on to become the first film to move from the underground to commercial cinema. Since 1972, when Warhol pulled all of his films out of distribution, the public has had extremely limited access to The Chelsea Girls , outside of museum screenings. In honour of the 20th Anniversary of The Andy Warhol Museum and what would have been Warhol’s 85th birthday, hundreds of Warhol’s films – some never seen before – have been converted to a digital format with the partnership of The Andy Warhol Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Moving Picture Company (MPC), a Technicolor Company. This book is an in-depth look at Warhol’s most famous film. It includes all newly digitized film stills, never-before-published transcripts, unpublished archival materials, and expanded information about each of the individual films that comprise the three- plus hour film. As the film alternates sound between the left and right screens, the book reproduces the transcript in complete form as one hears it, with imagery from the corresponding reels. There is also a full transcription of the unheard reels in the back of the book. This is a substantial contribution to the scholarship on Warhol’s complex and most commercial film.
