On July 22, 1988, Henry Green was saved by grace from a life of addiction to drugs and alcohol. He was born in 1955 in the South during the days of segregation to a single mother. After a difficult childhood, at thirteen, Henry turned to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope. Growing up in an era fueled by sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll, one drug led to another and finally to a needle in his arm. Henry contracted Hepatitis C, lost everything, and became homeless due to his substance abuse. After Henry hit bottom, he entered recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) and Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.) and became a leader in the community as an Addictions Specialist. Then in 2009, Henry was diagnosed with terminal liver disease. Henry went for a second opinion at Mayo Clinic. With the advent of a new medication (Harvoni) for hepatitis and the expertise of Mayo Clinic, Henry was cured of hepatitis and received a liver transplant in 2014. Since that time, Henry retired from a lucrative career to dedicate his life to service to others. Now fueled by gratitude Henry, uses his experience, time, and resources to help homeless alcoholics and addicts in the Fernandina Beach, Florida, area recover.

A Socio-Legal History of the Laws of War
Christopher W. Mullins
Emerald Publishing Limited

Since the Second World War, international laws governing the conduct of war and the behaviour of soldiers on the field of battle have been of strong academic and legal interest. Yet while they have seen their strongest articulation and enforcement in the contemporary era, rules governing such conduct are deeply rooted in human history. Beginning with the origins of organized warfare in the ancient world, A Socio-Legal History of the Laws of War: Constraining Carnage traces key structural and cultural changes through multiple historical contexts, highlighting various approaches to the nature and purpose of war, as well as the roles of both bystanders and participants. Where other scholarship has focused on the legality of war itself, Christopher W. Mullins concentrates on rules surrounding the behaviour of soldiers and commanders in the field while also demonstrating how these issues have transformed over time. Rooted in critical historical documents from the Tudors to the American Revolution, this rich history, the first of two volumes, provides a cogent understanding of how the current historical moment has developed, as well as of the potential paths that lie ahead.

A Socio-Legal History of the Laws of War

International laws governing the conduct of war and the behaviour of soldiers on the field of battle is a topic of strong academic and legal interest. Moving beyond contemporary work on the laws of war that is legalistic in nature, A Socio-Legal History of the Laws of War demonstrates how the content and application of these laws are driven as much by cultural worldview and normative practice, as by legal principle. Tying the story of the development of the laws of war to key structural and cultural changes occurring within the societies that develop and adopt such behavioural proscriptions, this history, the second of two volumes, examines the emergence of international law and legal orders whereby warfare and its conduct begin moving out of the realm of cultural norms and into a quasi-legal space, where specific principles of international law in general, and laws of war in particular, become more precisely articulated, formalized, and codified. Examining the evolution and multiplication of laws constraining how warfare is waged from the founding of the United Nations and the formalized creation of the Geneva Conventions to the contemporary era, the utilization of ad hoc tribunals in the post-war period, and the establishment of the International Criminal Court in the early 21st century, Mullins provides a cogent understanding of how this historical moment developed and what paths potential lie ahead.
This book is about the meanings of masculinities within the social networks of the streets of an American city (St Louis, Missouri), and how these shaped perceptions and enactments of violence. Based on a large number of interviews with offenders the author provides a rich description of life on the streets, contextualizing criminal violence within this deviant subculture, and with a specific focus on issues of gender. The book provides one of the most detailed descriptions yet of the forms masculinity takes in disadvantages communities in the United States. It establishes how street based gender identity motivated and guided men through violent encounters, exploring how men's relationships with women and their families instigated violence. One key issue addressed is why men resorted to violence in certain situations and not in others, exploring the range of choices open to them and how these opportunities were interpreted. The book makes a major contribution to the study of the relationship between masculinities and violence, making use of a much larger sample than elsewhere.
What about those who have never heard? The debate swirls and feelings run deep. What is the fate of the unevangelized? The traditional position-that apart from an explicit faith in Jesus no one is saved-seems to have fallen out of favor with many evangelicals. Here is a passionate but irenic response to the arguments of those who believe that the unevangelized can (or might) be saved apart from knowledge of Jesus Christ. Building on the insights of others, nine scholars introduce readers, even those with little background, to the ongoing discussion. Key questions are probed and answered from a biblical, theological and historical perspective. The book's positive thrust is summed up by editors: "God is passionately engaged in gathering people to know, love and worship him from every tribe, language, people and nation. And he has called us to join him on this mission."

This book, 'Not Christ's Church', is an examination on the legitimacy of what man and the world calls 'church' - in light of the Scriptures. There are denominations and 'church' buildings; but, is it the True Church? Is your 'church' enabling and calling, to and for you, mirroring what the Church is supposed to be? Or, are you comfortably trading-off responsibility (along with honor and power) to an organization that will relieve you (for a fee/indulgence/tithe) with a lie - granting religiosity (and false assurance)? Those who identify with such places are deceived and being deceived, children, immature, tossed around; and doing so willfully disobedient to God's Word and Christ Jesus. In 2 Cor. 6:17-18 and Rev. 17 we are issued the call and warning to leave such places. All denominations and 'church' buildings are no different than the Roman Catholic church in where their authority is drawn - their selves - not the Word of God. Some claim the Bible as their sole source of authority; yet, in exhortation, practice, and accountability - not THE ONLY authority. You can't offer reformation to that which is corrupt. We are to be, The Family of God, The Body of Christ, His Bride, His Church. Christendom began in The House Church. The only real, genuine, Biblical, authentic, Church is the New Testament Church.

Quantitative Intertextuality
Christopher W. Forstall; Walter J. Scheirer
Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2019
sidottu
This book introduces quantitative intertextuality, a new approach to the algorithmic study of information reuse in text, sound and images. Employing a variety of tools from machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, readers will learn to trace patterns of reuse across diverse sources for scholarly work and practical applications. The respective chapters share highly novel methodological insights in order to guide the reader through the basics of intertextuality. In Part 1, “Theory”, the theoretical aspects of intertextuality are introduced, leading to a discussion of how they can be embodied by quantitative methods. In Part 2, “Practice”, specific quantitative methods are described to establish a set of automated procedures for the practice of quantitative intertextuality. Each chapter in Part 2 begins with a general introduction to a major concept (e.g., lexical matching, sound matching, semantic matching), followed by a casestudy (e.g., detecting allusions to a popular television show in tweets, quantifying sound reuse in Romantic poetry, identifying influences in fan faction by thematic matching), and finally the development of an algorithm that can be used to reveal parallels in the relevant contexts.Because this book is intended as a “gentle” introduction, the emphasis is often on simple yet effective algorithms for a given matching task. A set of exercises is included at the end of each chapter, giving readers the chance to explore more cutting-edge solutions and novel aspects to the material at hand. Additionally, the book’s companion website includes software (R and C++ library code) and all of the source data for the examples in the book, as well as supplemental content (slides, high-resolution images, additional results) that may prove helpful for exploring the different facets of quantitative intertextuality that are presented in each chapter.Given its interdisciplinary nature, the book will appeal to a broad audience. From practitioners specializing in forensics to students of cultural studies, readers with diverse backgrounds (e.g., in the social sciences, natural language processing, or computer vision) will find valuable insights.
Queering Memory and National Identity in Transcultural U.S. Literature and Culture
Christopher W. Clark
Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2020
sidottu
This book examines the queer implications of memory and nationhood in transcultural U.S. literature and culture. Through an analysis of art and photography responding to the U.S. domestic response to 9/11, Iraq war fiction, representations of Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay, and migrant fiction in the twenty-first century, Christopher W. Clark creates a queer archive of transcultural U.S. texts as a way of destabilizing heteronormativity and thinking about productive spaces of queer world-building. Drawing on the fields of transcultural memory, queer studies, and transculturalism, this book raises important questions of queer bodies and subjecthood. Clark traces their legacies through texts by Sinan Antoon, Mohamedou Ould Slahi among others, alongside film and photography that includes artists such as Nina Berman and Hasan Elahi. In all, the book queers forms of cultural memory and national identity to uncover the traces of injury but also spaces of regeneration.
