Tanks on the streets, local regiments confined to barracks and the imposition of martial law. This was not Petrograd, but Glasgow in 1919.Revolt on the Clyde is William Gallacher's eye witness account of these tumultuous events - and more - in an era that helped put the 'Red' into 'Red Clydeside': as the bastion of Scottish socialism. It is the story of establishing works councils, of rent strikes and of the opposition to the First World War, an opposition that seemed poised to usher in a socialist revolution in Scotland. It is also the story of the extraordinary individuals who fashioned those times: of John Maclean and V.I. Lenin - and of Gallacher himself, a working class leader, temperance campaigner, Communist MP, and central force, driving events on the Clyde from 1913-19.This story continues to inspire, and it maintains its relevance for the present day, as an unsurpassed account of struggle, sacrifice, idealism and industrial militancy. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the twentieth-century history of the left in Britain, and especially Scotland.
The Forth and Clyde Canal, completed in 1790, was by far the largest engineering project that had ever been seen in Scotland. It allowed coal and machinery to travel East and grain to travel West. Passengers could travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh in greater comfort than by stagecoach, and it produced employment along its entire route. But it required capital on a scale previously unknown; it required the collaboration of Edinburgh, Glasgow and London; it required new technology; and it encountered its full measure of constructional problems. It took 22 years to build. The Forth and Clyde Canal enjoyed half a century of success before it was eclipsed by the railways. Although the passenger trade was lost, and much of the freight also, the canal struggled on for another century before the rise of road transport resulted in its decline. Now, after a long period of neglect, and sporting the spectacular Falkirk Wheel, it enjoys new life as an imaginative leisure resource. Thomas J. Dowds tells the story of the rise, fall and rise again of this landmark in Scottish history.
Greenock, on the West Coast of Scotland earned the sobriquet of "Sugaropolis" as it was the major refiner of sugar imported from the Caribbean and the East Indies. How did Greenock develop into the leading port in Scotland? This book takes a new look at the growth of the town, dependent as it was, on the slave economies of North America and West Indies. Fully illustrated throughout the 700+ pages, the author looks at the men and industries involved.
I had known Marie since autumn, 1993, after both of us had worked on a documentary titled Remembering Bonnie and Clyde. She brought in the “death shirt” and other items to be photographed for this program. I watched her being interviewed and was impressed by the story she had to tell. A few days afterward, I sent Marie a small thank-you card with a note telling her how much I enjoyed meeting her and that if I could ever be of assistance, she should call. I didn’t expect a response, but shortly thereafter, Marie called and asked to meet with me, and thus began one of the richest and most interesting times of my life. --Jonathan Davis""It’s probably too late to change the overall perception that the American public has of my brothers Clyde and Buck, as well as Clyde’s sweetheart Bonnie Parker and Buck’s wife Blanche Caldwell Barrow. The public’s perspective on my family members and friends has been reinforced by over 60 years of caricature and exaggeration through the output of the publishing houses and the Hollywood studios. It began during the days of the old newsreels in the movie houses and has continued unchanged up through today’s modern cable television networks and satellite communications. No matter which medium carries the message, the message itself is typically 100% pure baloney. The proper place to begin to tell the story of my brothers, Clyde and Buck, is with our parents, since my father and my mother played such a big part in all of our lives. Henry B. Barrow, my father, was born in Pensacola, Florida, on January 10, 1873 . . . Back in those days, mandatory school attendance was taken pretty lightly. In fact, my father only went to school one-half-day in his life. The day he attempted to go, he was brought back home in a buggy after getting sick at school. Early in his life, he was afflicted with chills and this condition stayed with him throughout his childhood years. I’ve always felt that my father was a victim of a malaria attack back in his Florida days, to which he developed a severe reaction. He was extremely sickly as a child in Florida, and this condition carried over to his early adolescent years in Texas. However, he was able to assist on his father’s farm as his health improved in his later teen years. Apparently getting away from the mosquito-infested Pensacola region of the 1880’s eventually improved my father’s health."" --Marie Barrow Scoma

Me uudistamme tämän maan! Otimme kaiken irti siitä, mistä ennen olimme jääneet paitsi. Vapaudesta, rakkaudesta, ruuista ja juomista. Make Love Not War! All You Need is Love!"
