Constance Verity has been saving the world since she was seven, and she's sick of it. She sets off on one last adventure to reset her destiny and become the one thing she's never been: ordinary. Ever since she was granted a wish at birth by her fairy godmother, Constance Verity has become the world's great adventurer. She is a master of martial arts, a keen detective, and possesses a collection of strange artifacts. Constance has spent the past twenty-eight years saving the world, and she's tired of it. All she wants is to work in an office and date a nice, normal guy. And she's figured a way out. The only problem is that saving the world is Constance's destiny. She's great at it, and there are forces at work to make sure she stays in the job. Then again, it's also her destiny to have a glorious death.

Soon to be a major motion picture starring actress/comedian Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians; The Farewell) as Constance Verity: the girl who's been saving the world since she was seven. It all began at Constance Verity's seventh birthday party, when she defeated a giant snake - but really, it was the fault of the magic wish granted to her at her birth. She's now a master of exotic martial arts and a keen detective, and she possesses a collection of strange artefacts, mostly kept in unlabelled boxes in her apartment. But Constance has spent the past twenty-seven years saving the world, and frankly, she's sick of it. She wants an office job and a normal boyfriend - one who isn't going to get killed by who knows what - and she's figured out the way to get them. She's going to kill her fairy godmother. After all, it was Grandmother Willow who granted the wish and reset her life. The problem is, saving the world is Constance's destiny. She's really good at it, and there are forces at work to make sure she stays in the job. Then again, it's also her destiny to have a glorious death.'An ethnically diverse heroine, great adventure pacing, a witty sense of humour and some quality banter make this a delightful subversion of superhero tropes' Booklist (starred review)'Martinez delivers another witty, fast-paced fantasy. The deadpan snark is nonstop and sure to keep readers giggling' Library Journal

It is 1936, and Albert B. is one of the first French citizens to join the Fascist party. During the war, he becomes a collaborator. It's only a matter of time before he dons a German uniform himself. Taking place in the limbo between the moment of Albert's initial "fall" and his inevitable capture, following the Allied invasion of Mainau, "The Laurels of Lake Constance" is the story not only of Albert himself, but of his daughter, who must endure the paradox of loving a man whose beliefs and allegiances are nothing short of catastrophic.Beautifully translated by novelist Harry Mathews, "The Laurels of Lake Constance" is a profoundly moving story about both war and childhood, and their intersection in one household, conjured in all its details, be they beautiful or shameful: a resigned mother playing music, a father absent, an era frozen in a tragic fresco where novelistic detail mixes with history.
Motor Inn Mêlée: Constance and Ross's Wrestling Adventure on a Business Road Trip
Ross is stuck out of town on a business trip, expecting to be bored out of his mind during off-hours. At breakfast the first morning, he is surprised to spot a female coworker alone at a nearby table. She is from another part of the business, in fact possibly a rival. They have a pleasant breakfast together, but is something else brewing?A funny thing happened while writing this story - it morphed into three stories I had originally planned to do the 'Strip Wrestling' story and follow it with a mud wrestling story. But as I got going, the story took a left turn and 'Water Fight' was born. I was happy with the story, but disappointed that the original interplay between the characters (while at Cactus Joe's) had been lost. So, I wrote the story again and the 'Strip Wrestling' episode came about, as originally intended. But, the planned mud wrestling sequel didn't seem to make sense any more. So, I wrote the story yet again, this time putting the mud wrestling first. That effort resulted in the 'Rivals' episode.
