I'm Positive, I Forgive You: How I Forgave the Man That Gave Me HIV
What would you do if the Dr. came into the room and told you, "Your test results came back. You tested positive for HIV."? What would you do if you knew specifically the partner that transmitted the virus to you and were unable to successfully make contact with them? What if you found out they lied to you about their status and your naive belief in their words landed you in a hospital at 29 with seizures and an HIV diagnosis? Would you be angry? Hurt? Scared?I was all of those things and more HIV is not a small circumstance to deal with. It is life altering in so many ways But I realized the self inflicted pain I was living in as a result of not forgiving was even worse than HIV itself This book details how I navigated my HIV diagnosis as well as how I arrived at a place of forgiveness toward the individual that transmitted the virus to me.
How to be the Loving, Wise Parent You Want to be...Even with Your Teenager!

Trans Toronto: An Oral History
Many social theorists claim that the end of the 20th century was the beginning of the "postmodern" era, a time in which many time-honoured ideas were rejected. Trans Toronto explores the claim that trans people demonstrate a wide-spread repudiation of modern conceptions of selfhood and gender. But the opinions of those who live trans lives have yet to be explored. How do trans people understand gender? What do they think of the assertions of postmodern gender theory? Trans Toronto documents answers to these questions in an oral history of Toronto's trans communities at the end of the 20th century telling the story of gender and sex in the context of dramatic cultural and historical change.

In Justice in Extreme Cases, Darryl Robinson argues that the encounter between criminal law theory and international criminal law (ICL) can be illuminating in two directions: criminal law theory can challenge and improve ICL, and conversely, ICL's novel puzzles can challenge and improve mainstream criminal law theory. Robinson recommends a 'coherentist' method for discussions of principles, justice and justification. Coherentism recognizes that prevailing understandings are fallible, contingent human constructs. This book will be a valuable resource to scholars and jurists in ICL, as well as scholars of criminal law theory and legal philosophy.
The Rhetoric of Diversion in English Literature and Culture, 1690–1760
Why did eighteenth-century writers employ digression as a literary form of diversion, and how did their readers come to enjoy linguistic and textual devices that self-consciously disrupt the reading experience? Darryl P. Domingo answers these questions through an examination of the formative period in the commercialization of leisure in England, and the coincidental coming of age of literary self-consciousness in works published between approximately 1690 and 1760. During this period, commercial entertainers tested out new ways of gratifying a public increasingly eager for amusement, while professional writers explored the rhetorical possibilities of intrusion, obstruction, and interruption through their characteristic use of devices like digression. Such devices adopt similar forms and fulfil similar functions in literature as do diversions in culture: they 'unbend the mind' and reveal the complex reciprocity between commercialized leisure and commercial literature in the age of Swift, Pope, and Fielding.
The Economics of Electricity Markets

The Economics of Electricity Markets

Bridges the knowledge gap between engineering and economics in a complex and evolving deregulated electricity industry, enabling readers to understand, operate, plan and design a modern power system With an accessible and progressive style written in straight-forward language, this book covers everything an engineer or economist needs to know to understand, operate within, plan and design an effective liberalized electricity industry, thus serving as both a useful teaching text and a valuable reference. The book focuses on principles and theory which are independent of any one market design. It outlines where the theory is not implemented in practice, perhaps due to other over-riding concerns. The book covers the basic modelling of electricity markets, including the impact of uncertainty (an integral part of generation investment decisions and transmission cost-benefit analysis). It draws out the parallels to the Nordpool market (an important point of reference for Europe). Written from the perspective of the policy-maker, the first part provides the introductory background knowledge required. This includes an understanding of basic economics concepts such as supply and demand, monopoly, market power and marginal cost. The second part of the book asks how a set of generation, load, and transmission resources should be efficiently operated, and the third part focuses on the generation investment decision. Part 4 addresses the question of the management of risk and Part 5 discusses the question of market power. Any power system must be operated at all times in a manner which can accommodate the next potential contingency. This demands responses by generators and loads on a very short timeframe. Part 6 of the book addresses the question of dispatch in the very short run, introducing the distinction between preventive and corrective actions and why preventive actions are sometimes required. The seventh part deals with pricing issues that arise under a regionally-priced market, such as the Australian NEM. This section introduces the notion of regions and interconnectors and how to formulate constraints for the correct pricing outcomes (the issue of "constraint orientation"). Part 8 addresses the fundamental and difficult issue of efficient transmission investment, and finally Part 9 covers issues that arise in the retail market. Bridges the gap between engineering and economics in electricity, covering both the economics and engineering knowledge needed to accurately understand, plan and develop the electricity marketComprehensive coverage of all the key topics in the economics of electricity marketsCovers the latest research and policy issues as well as description of the fundamental concepts and principles that can be applied across all markets globallyNumerous worked examples and end-of-chapter problemsCompanion website holding solutions to problems set out in the book, also the relevant simulation (GAMS) codes
Nuclear Power

Nuclear Power

Darryl Siemer

As the world’s energy sources continue to develop, with less reliance on traditional fossil fuels and more reliance on cleaner, more efficient, alternative energy sources, nuclear power continues to be a dividing point for many people. Some believe it is the answer to our energy problems for the future, while others warn of the risks. Written by a retired scientist who spent most of his career at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), this book aims to delve into the issues surrounding nuclear power and dispel its myths, while building an argument for why the United States should develop a nuclear power plan for the future. As a “whistleblower,” the author spent much of the last ten years of his career at the INL raising concerns about how its mission of serving as the Department of Energy’s lead laboratory in radioactive waste management was not being properly managed. While the United States continues to tread water on the issue of nuclear energy, the author believes that a nuclear “renaissance” is not only possible but is necessary for meeting the world’s growing demand for energy, especially clean energy. With fossil fuels slowly dying out and renewable energy sources not able to handle the demand for a continuously growing energy-consuming public, nuclear is an obvious solution. This book is a must-have for any engineer working in nuclear power, students hoping to go into that industry, and other engineers and scientists interested in the subject. This book is both “technical” and “political” because they’re equally important in determining what actually happens in institutions dealing with technical problems.
Communicating Creativity

Communicating Creativity

This book provides an extensive and original analysis of the way that written and spoken communication facilitates creative practice in the university art and design studio. Challenging the established view of creativity as a personal attribute which can be objectively measured, the author demonstrates instead that creativity and creative practice are constructed through a complex array of intersecting discourses, each shaped by wider socio-historical contexts, beliefs and values. The author draws upon a range of methods and resources to capture this dynamic complexity from corpus linguistics to ethnography and multimodal analysis. This innovative volume will appeal to students and scholars of discourse analysis, creativity, and applied linguistics. It will also appeal to art and design educators.
Michael Dummett and the Theory of Meaning
Published in 1998, this book argues that in recent decades, Anglo-American philosophy of language has been captivated by the idea that the key to progress in this area of philosophy lies in investigating the possibility of constructing a theory of meaning. This text provides an in-depth critique of the Davidsonian suggestion that Tarski's work on formal definitions of truth is an important element in allowing us to understand the form that the theory of meaning should take.

Newly sober and nostalgic for the Weimar days of Isherwood and Auden, Jed arrives to chase boys and to escape from what it means to be a black male in America. But history, both personal and political, can't be avoided with time or distance. Whether it's the judgment of the cousin he grew up with and her husband's bourgeois German family, the lure of white wine in a down-and-out bar, a gang of racists looking for a brawl, or the ravaged visage of Rock Hudson flashing behind the face of every white boy Jed desperately longs for, the past never stays past, even in faraway Berlin. An intoxicating, provocative novel of appetite, identity, and self-construction, Darryl Pinckney's Black Deutschland tells the story of an outsider searching for an obscure home in Europe's brightest and darkest city. Named one of the most anticipated books of the year by The Millions, Flavorwire, The Boston Globe, and The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel; For readers of Teju Cole. From the author of High Cotton comes the story of a young African American man in divided Berlin: "The novel is full of wondrous things" (James Wood, The New Yorker).
Come Back in September: A Literary Education on West Sixty-Seventh Street, Manhattan
Critic and writer Darryl Pinckney recalls his friendship and apprenticeship with Elizabeth Hardwick and Barbara Epstein and the introduction they offered him to the New York literary world. Darryl Pinckney arrived at Columbia University in New York City in the early 1970s and had the opportunity to enroll in Elizabeth Hardwick's creative writing class at Barnard. It changed his life. When the semester was over, he continued to visit her, and he became close to both Hardwick and Barbara Epstein, Hardwick's best friend and neighbor and a fellow founder of The New York Review of Books. Pinckney was drawn into a New York literary world where he encountered some of the fascinating contributors to the Review, among them Susan Sontag, Robert Lowell, and Mary McCarthy. Yet the intellectual and artistic freedom that Pinckney observed on West Sixty-seventh Street could conflict with the demands of his politically minded family and their sense of the unavoidable lessons of black history. In addition, through his peers and former classmates--such as Felice Rosser, Jim Jarmusch, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucy Sante, Howard Brookner, and Nan Goldin--Pinckney witnessed the coming together of the New Wave scene in the East Village. He experienced the avant-garde life at the same time as he was discovering the sexual freedom brought by gay liberation. It was his time for hope. In Come Back in September, through his memories of the city and of Hardwick, we see the emergence and evolution of Pinckney himself as a writer.

An Intelligent User Interface to Support Air Force Weather Product Generation and Automated Metrics
Air Force pilots require dependable weather reports so they may avoid unsafe flying conditions. In order to better gauge the accuracy of its weather products, Air Force Weather has established the requirement for an Air Force-wide automated weather metrics program. Under the guidelines for this program, forecasts will automatically be compared to observed weather to determine their accuracy. Statistics will be collected in the hopes of determining forecast error trends that can be corrected through education and training. In order for the statistical data produced by such a program to draw reliable conclusions about forecast accuracy, however, the correct format of the raw forecasts and observations must be ensured before the reports are disseminated. Beyond a simple check for typographical errors, however, the system must also have weather domain knowledge to understand when the input data content does not fit the context of the report, even though it has been formatted properly. This thesis proposes the application of an intelligent user-interface "critic" advice system, to ensure not only correct product format and provide content quality control, but to collaborate with and advise the forecaster or observer during product generation, with the ultimate goal of producing more accurate weather products.
