Algorithm Synthesis: A Comparative Study

Algorithm Synthesis: A Comparative Study

David M. Steier; A. Penny Anderson

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
1989
nidottu
In early 1986, one of us (D.M.S.) was constructing an artificial intelligence system to design algorithms, and the other (A.P.A.) was getting started in program transformations research. We shared an office, and exchanged a few papers on the systematic development of algorithms from specifications. Gradually we realized that we were trying to solve some of the same problems. And so, despite radical differences between ourselves in research approaches, we set out together to see what we could learn from these papers. That's how this book started: a couple of graduate students trying to cope with The Literature. At first, there was just a list of papers. One of us (D.M.S.) tried to cast the papers in a uniform framework by describing the problem spaces searched, an approach used in artificial intelligence for understanding many tasks. The generalized problem space descriptions, though useful, seemed to abstract too much, so we decided to compare papers by different authors dealing with the same algorithm. These comparisons proved crucial: for then we began to see similar key design choices for each algorithm.
Physical Education and Curriculum Study (Routledge Revivals)
The Curriculum is the focal point for the study of educational practice. It is the area in which individual, group and societal needs and interests meet and is consequently the source of much friction and contention. This book, first published in 1988, introduces students to some of the major points of debate; in particular, the role of curriculum-based study in the development of physical education and the credibility of the subject as an educational activity. David Kirk emphasises the beneficial effects of physical education and suggests ways in which instructive programmes can be created. A practical and interesting title, this reissue will be of particular value to students and teachers of sport science, and educational practitioners more generally.

A Critique of the Study of Kinship

A Critique of the Study of Kinship

David M. Schneider

The University of Michigan Press
1984
nidottu
Schneider challenges the assumptions on which anthropology has depended for the last century by showing that one of the major categories in terms of which social life has been understood is largely untenable. The idea of kinship is subject to penetrating scrutiny. Unlike the proverbial Emperor, it is not that kinship has no clothes. The question is whether there is anything at all underneath those clothes. And even when the clothes appear to be shreds and patches held together by a web of illusions. The critique uses a novel device in that the same set of ethnographic “facts” are looked at through different theories. This reveals a good deal about the different theories. By the same token, of course, this critique goes into the question of what a “fact” of “kinship” might be and how to recognize one either at home or in the field. Schneider’s critique also uses history to raise cogent questions about how kinship has been studied. But it is not as 20/20 hindsight that history is used. Due respect is paid to the climate of the time, as well as the climatic changes and the ways in which these helped to create the emperor’s clothes. Right, wrong, or indifferent, Schneider’s study of how the emperor “kinship” was dressed and then redressed as the winds of change threatened disarray, proves challenging to the theories by which anthropology lives, as well as to the specifically privileged domain of “kinship.” The implications of this study for a wide range of problems within theoretical anthropology are striking.
Parallel Gospels in Harmony - with Study Guide
PARALLEL GOSPELS IN HARMONY - with STUDY GUIDE lets you read and study the four Gospels in parallel columns with corresponding passages side-by-side, using the modern language World English Bible. It's also copyright-free, so that anyone can reproduce it. A disciple in the garden of Gethsemane cuts off the ear of the high priest's servant according to all four Gospels. But only John tells us the servant's name, and that it was Peter who wielded the sword. And only Luke tells us that Jesus healed the wound. This book allows you to see all of this at a glance.
An Introduction to the Study of Paul

An Introduction to the Study of Paul

David G. Horrell

sidottu
This tried and tested introduction to Paul needs little introduction of its own. After considering Paul's importance and influence, and the important sources for the study of Paul, the volume covers the following key topics: the earliest period of Christianity - from Jesus to Paul; Paul's life before and after his 'conversion'; his individual letters; the major elements of his theology; his attitude to Israel and the Jewish law; perspectives on the Pauline assemblies, including their socio-economic location, meeting places, and attitudes towards women; and Paul's legacy in the New Testament and beyond. The volume has been revised throughout and fully updated with respect to bibliography, and to presenting the latest debates surrounding Paul's thought in a manageable format - including those around ‘old’ and ‘new’ perspectives, with a new section on the ‘radical’ new Jewish perspective, and those related to the socio-economic status and character of the Pauline assemblies. The helpful study questions and reading lists have also been revised.

The Magic Door - A Study on the Italic Hermetic Tradition
The Magic Door is a study on myth, magic, and metamorphosis in the Italic (Italian) branch of the Western Inner Traditions. The Magic Door surveys a wide spectrum of esoteric traditions and explores the heroes, schools, and teachings that have provided the foundations for initiation in Italy, from Roman times to the present, in the broader context of an Occidental Tradition. The overarching themes that constitute this tradition include a perennial Western Empire (Hesperia), Atavistic Resurgences, Heroic Spirit, and internal practices specific to the Ars Italica Magia, Amatoria, Memoria, Imaginatio, and Insomnium. Initiation in this context, from the Latin initiātus, refers to the individual inner journey to identify and integrate with the Principle (Self, Soul, Numen) and the corresponding Tradition (Olympia, Heroi, Aeneades). In this sense, initiation - like Aeneas' quest to reveal his future by finding the roots (principle) - refers to a process of self-discovery, identity, and tradition.Summary: Aeneas (archetypal hero of initiation) Heroic Initiation through the River Mnemosyne Spiritual Kingship Hesperia Myths and Symbols of Ancient Rome Vestal Virgins & the She-Wolf Golden Bough and the Italic Tree of Life Return of the Nostoi (Olympians) Pythagorean Brotherhoods and the Underground Basilica of Porta Maggiore Cicero and the Art of Dreaming Magical Realism of Virgil Ovid's Ars Amatoria Apuleius and the Art of Metamorphoses Symmachus, Last of the Olympians Macrobius' Commentary on the Dream of Scipio Dante and the Fedeli d'Amore Revival of the Platonic Academy in Renaissance Florence Marsilio Ficino on Divine Love Pico della Mirandola on the Christian Cabbala Julius Pomponius Laetus and the Roman Academy Francesco Colonna and the Strife of Love in a Dream Hermes Redividus in Ludovico Lazzarelli and Giovanni Mercurio Correggio Renaissance Origins of the Tarot Giordano Bruno on the Art of Magic Tommasso Campanella on the Practice of Philosophical Ecstasy Cesare Della Riviera on the Magical World of Heroes The Magic Door of Rome Chiron the Centaur Cagliostro and the Arcana Arcanorum Giambattista Vico and the Restoration of Ancient Italic Wisdom Domenico Bocchini, Giustiniano Lebano, and the Neapolitan Mysterio Sophic School Giuliano Kremmerz and the Fraternity of Myriam Julius Evola and the UR Group Ekatlos and the Great ORMA Viennese Circle of Kronos Marco Daffi and the Rite of Andromeda Giammaria and the Body of Peers Commentary on the Golden Verses of Pythagoras Recapitulation of Orphic and Bacchic Initiation

This collection of freshly translated texts leads to a new appreciation of the richness and variety of the religious world within which Christianity emerged as a powerful new force. Bringing together for the first time under a single cover documents from Jewish, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Syrian, and little-known early Christian sources, the material is arranged to bring out as clearly as possible the ways in which early Christian worship of Jesus Christ as Savior and God both echoed contemporary worship of other savior gods and at the same time stood in sharp contrast to such worship. This revised and enlarged edition contains a new introduction on texts and traditions in late antiquity, a reworked translation of The Gospel of Peter, selections from Ovid's Metamorphoses, plus such documents as Papyrus Egerton 2, Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 840, and The Apocryphon of James. In addition, the table of contents has been expanded to allow easier access to the documents contained herein.
Discourse Analysis and the Study of Classroom Language and Literacy Events

Discourse Analysis and the Study of Classroom Language and Literacy Events

David Bloome; Stephanie Power Carter; Beth Morton Christian; Sheila Otto; Nora Shuart-Faris

sidottu
The authors present a social linguistic/social interactional approach to the discourse analysis of classroom language and literacy events. Building on recent theories in interactional sociolinguistics, literary theory, social anthropology, critical discourse analysis, and the New Literacy Studies, they describe a microethnographic approach to discourse analysis that provides a reflexive and recursive research process that continually questions what counts as knowledge in and of the interactions among teachers and students. The approach combines attention to how people use language and other systems of communication in constructing classroom events with attention to social, cultural, and political processes. The focus of attention is on actual people acting and reacting to each other, creating and recreating the worlds in which they live. One contribution of the microethnographic approach is to highlight the conception of people as complex, multi-dimensional actors who together use what is given by culture, language, social, and economic capital to create new meanings, social relationships and possibilities, and to recreate culture and language. The approach presented by the authors does not separate methodological, theoretical, and epistemological issues. Instead, they argue that research always involves a dialectical relationship among the object of the research, the theoretical frameworks and methodologies driving the research, and the situations within which the research is being conducted. Discourse Analysis and the Study of Classroom Language and Literacy Events: A Microethnographic Perspective:*introduces key constructs and the intellectual and disciplinary foundations of the microethnographic approach; *addresses the use of this approach to gain insight into three often discussed issues in research on classroom literacy events--classroom literacy events as cultural action, the social construction of identity, and power relations in and through classroom literacy events; *presents transcripts of classroom literacy events to illustrate how theoretical constructs, the research issue, the research site, methods, research techniques, and previous studies of discourse analysis come together to constitute a discourse analysis; and *discusses the complexity of "locating" microethnographic discourse analysis studies within the field of literacy studies and within broader intellectual movements. This volume is of broad interest and will be widely welcomed by scholars and students in the field language and literacy studies, educational researchers focusing on analysis of classroom discourse, educational sociolinguists, and sociologists and anthropologists focusing on face-to-face interaction and language use.
