The two most westerly counties in England remain hugely popular for travellers looking for a break in the UK. Perhaps less well known is the fact that, against all the odds when faced by the Beeching Axe, a number of popular destinations can still be reached by today’s railway. From Barnstaple to Gunnislake, Exmouth to Falmouth, John Jackson explores the variety of lines and stations that remain on the railway map in the counties of Devon and Cornwall. With much of the area’s industry now consigned to history, there is little remaining freight traffic in the area. The main exception is the flow of Cornish china clay for export that is still carried by rail and centred on the area around Par and St Blazey. The author has spent countless hours chasing these somewhat elusive workings in recent years. From rolling countryside to seaside views, these two counties have it all.
There is always a good story in a shipwreck. The tales from survivors, or frequently from those who tried to rescue them, are often astonishing in the accounts of bravery and self-sacrifice they reveal. Britain's long maritime past can be traced through the shipwrecks off our coasts. The South Devon coast has a rich maritime past, which archaeologists have been able to link to the Bronze Age. Some of the oldest shipwrecks in Northern Europe lie off this coast and there is evidence of a seaborne prehistoric trade in metals and a later trade with Byzantium. Ships in the area helped transport troops to Brittany at the beginning of the Hundred Years War, four ships were sent to fight the Spanish Armada of 1588, and during the Second World War the area served as a staging post for the Normandy Landings. This guide, with original illustrations, is essential reading for coastal walkers and kayakers with an interest in good stories to accompany them. Rather than a blank canvas as they look out to sea, readers will be able to relive these gripping stories, seeing the shipwrecks in their mind's eye.
On 21 May 1969 Dr Richard Beeching officially reopened the railway between Buckfastleigh and Totnes in south Devon as the Dart Valley Railway. This former GWR branch line had been closed by British Railways in 1962, although the passenger service had disappeared in 1958. The railway was only the fifth heritage railway in the country to be reopened and, though volunteers were involved, the owning company had shareholders and was run as a commercial undertaking. The author was one of those early volunteers who worked to make the railway physically fit to carry passengers again. In the intervening fifty-odd years since, the line has had its highs and lows, has come close to closing, has been taken over by a registered charity and now seems to be much more assured in its future direction. Many of the images in this account have never been published before and give a fascinating insight into the early years of the infant heritage railway.
