Etudes de Linguistique Appliquee - No3/2013: Parlers de Metiers. Hommage a Gabrielle Quemada
HOMMAGE A GABRIELLE QUEMADA, LEXICOLOGUE ET PREFACIERE D'UN DICTIONNAIRE DU PARLER DES METIERS DE PIERRE PERRET English summary: The current volume of this journal on applied linguistics offers articles on dictionaries, including a study of agricultural and wine making terms as defined over the course of the twentieth century, as well as definitions of gold making and related techniques in historical dictionaries since the early modern era.

A wickedly funny, full-color, illustrated sendup of the trendy lifestyle publication GOOP. What is Glop? Glop is a business and a website. But Glop is also a feeling. It's about picking the right expensive organic eye cream that will make you fit seamlessly into the top tiers of high society and sits next to Bono at a 42-course seitan tasting dinner held in a sex dungeon deep beneath the North Pole. Glop is about being conscious to the tiny details of our lives-what to eat, where to buy your cashmere yoga pants, which juice cleanse will remove the most mercury toxins from both your body and your cashmere yoga pants. Glop is about you. In this scathingly humorous parody, Gabrielle Moss skewers the vanity, elitism, and silliness of the lifestyle website everyone loves to hate. Here are favorite recipes, detoxes, activities, cleanses, beauty tips, juice cleanses, vacation destinations, and a selection of hand creams that will open your third eye-plus lots of celebrity namedropping and more. Glop includes everything from the silly to sublime-make-at-home stem cell moisturizing repair masques, weekend colonics, restorative yoga poses (for when Sting is mad at you about that thing you did), and even the freshest bones for your bone broth. Here, too, are G's essential tips on parenthood, relationships, work and finances, entertaining, food (well, maybe not food), spirituality, beauty, fashion, home, gifts, kids, and more. Nothing in Glop is sacred-except for a few Indian cows you can't afford.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary WorkNamed a Best Book of the Year by The RootChosen by Emma Straub as a Best New Celebrity Memoir“A book of essays as raw and honest as anyone has ever produced.” — Lena Dunham, Lenny LetterIn the spirit of Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman. One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union—a forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real." In this moving collection of thought provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards, and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic, and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

I was having second thoughts—in fact, so many thoughts they were organizing to go on strike. The book is a history of the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience and an assessment of its effectiveness in advancing neuroscience. The book discusses the Fund's early and steady commitment to basic science as well as it's tradition of leveraging relatively modest dollars to make a big difference in careers and the field overall. The fund exists strictly to give awards and create a community of peers through an annual conference dedicated to research. In near unison, scientists who have received awards say they were able to test a risky idea, get their career off the ground, or make a significant change in their career because of McKnight's flexible dollars. The book consists of three parts: (1) origins--including both the funder and the scientists who shaped the program; (2) a review of the science to show how McKnight awardees have advanced the field; and (3) 10 keys to success. We also have an interview with Julius Axelrod (one of the early advisors, done shortly before his death in 2004) and stories of how awardees used their McKnight grants, plus other information.

An Ocean of Air: Why the Wind Blows and Other Mysteries of the Atmosphere
We don't just live in the air; we live because of it. It's the most miraculous substance on earth, responsible for our food, our weather, our water, and our ability to hear. In this exuberant book, gifted science writer Gabrielle Walker peels back the layers of our atmosphere with the stories of the people who uncovered its secrets: - A flamboyant Renaissance Italian discovers how heavy our air really is: The air filling Carnegie Hall, for example, weighs seventy thousand pounds. - A one-eyed barnstorming pilot finds a set of winds that constantly blow five miles above our heads. - An impoverished American farmer figures out why hurricanes move in a circle by carving equations with his pitchfork on a barn door. - A well-meaning inventor nearly destroys the ozone layer. - A reclusive mathematical genius predicts, thirty years before he's proved right, that the sky contains a layer of floating metal fed by the glowing tails of shooting stars.
Shaping Contracts for Work

Shaping Contracts for Work

Gabrielle Golding

Oxford University Press
2023
sidottu
Shaping Contracts for Work provides an in-depth examination of the common law's role in shaping employment contracts through the mechanism of implied terms. It constructs a theory which views the nature of the employment contract as distinct from other types of work contract. Terms implied by law into employment contracts, as well as their potential to operate in other non-standard contracts for the performance of work, are critically examined by reference to the test that courts adopt when they are asked to imply such terms. In part one, Golding provides an overarching survey of the law which governs express and implied terms in contracts. In doing so, she considers the broader judicial role in implying terms and assesses how it can fundamentally alter the nature of the relationship between contracting parties. Part two draws comparisons between England and Australia, tracing the origins and status of select terms across both jurisdictions, and exploring how the application of these terms is often presumed. Golding also examines the duties of mutual trust, confidence, and good faith in both jurisdictions, investigating their potential application in employment contracts. In part three, Golding demonstrates why courts need to better articulate their understanding of what constitutes an 'employment contract' as a distinctive class of contract. By focussing on the impact of terms implied by law, this work adds a unique dimension to the debate concerning the regulation of waged work in the context of ever-increasing non-standard modes of work.
