Law as a Social Institution

Law as a Social Institution

Hamish Ross

Hart Publishing
2001
sidottu
This book develops the rudiments of a sociological perspective on state law and legal theory. It outlines a distinctive approach to theoretical enquiry that offers an improved understanding of law as a social and institutional phenomenon. The book draws upon Max Weber's sociological and juristic writings as a context in which to explore themes arising or selectively developed from a critical reassessment of key aspects of H.L.A. Hart's theory of law. The discussion initially centres around three problematical areas or 'Gordian Knots': essentially weaknesses in the analytical nucleus of The Concept of Law,matters of misplaced emphasis and other elements that, it is argued, have obscured fundamental aspects of a perceived social reality. Using the critique as a point of departure the book explores key issues that Hart merely touched upon or seemingly passed over: the role of the (sociologically inclined) jurist, the defensibility of an 'institutional insider's' perspective, the institutional behavioural dimension of the legal world, and the relational and social power dynamics of law-affected human behaviour.

Forecasting Forest Futures

Forecasting Forest Futures

Modelling is an important tool for understanding the complexity of forest ecosystems and the variety of interactions of ecosystem components, processes and values. This book describes the hybrid approach to modelling forest ecosystems and their possible response to natural and management-induced disturbance. The book describes the FORECAST family of ecosystem management models at three different spatial scales (tree, stand and landscape), and compares them with alternative models at these three spatial scales. The book will help forest managers to understand what to expect from ecosystem-based forest models; serve as a tool for use in teaching about sustainability, scenario analysis and value trade-offs in natural resources management; and assist policy makers, managers and researches working in assessment of sustainable forest management and ecosystem management. Several real-life examples of using the FORECAST family of models in forest management and other applications are presented from countries including Canada, China, Spain and the USA, to illustrate the concepts described in the text. The book also demonstrates how these models can be extended for scenario and value trade-off analysis through visualization and educational or management games.

It is the fourth in the series of anthologies which provide words for important occasions ("Handfast", "Handsel" and "Lament", also published by Polygon and the Scottish Poetry Library).
From SAS to Blood Diamond Wars

From SAS To Blood Diamond Wars is the story of an outstanding warrior, even by SAS standards. On the point of being demobbed from the SAS, Fred Marafono was recruited by David Stirling for his private security company. After Stirling's death, Fred found himself in the midst of Sierra Leone's Blood Diamond wars, and formed an unbreakable bonding with the country's champion of democracy, Chief Hinga Norman, whose leadership and tragic death are integral to the story.Fred was recruited by Simon Mann for the finest of all private military companies in Africa, Executive Outcomes. Fewer than two hundred of them defeated the rebels in their strongholds. Through political weakness, Executive Outcomes were made to leave the country, and chaos ensued. Committed men like Hinga Norman and British High Commissioner Peter Penfold saw that, in the absence of military commitment from the west, only highly professional former soldiers could spearhead the fight to restore democracy. Three of these veterans kept a vital air bridge open. Fred's final action was supporting the SAS in their brilliant hostage release, Operation Barras.Peter Penfold sums it all up in the book's foreword, writing of the, 'confidence, trust and admiration I have for this remarkable man. Airman Abroad

Airman Abroad

Hamish Brown

WHITTLES PUBLISHING
2023

A revealing picture of a time when Britain was losing its empire. It draws on letters written at the period by an airman, his vivid memories and experiences from the Canal Zone, Kenya during Mau Mau times, Cyprus and Jerusalem. His time encompassed conducting church services, being shipwrecked, numerous wildlife encounters and the formation of many lifelong friendships. The Canal Zone was no easy life and 50 years later a medal was awarded when the government was forced to admit it was deserved and to confess its own political chicanery in the events. Hamish paints a picture of the highs and lows of RAF life, a station being run down in Egypt, working in oppressive heat and now and then being shot at! He saw the Windrush a week before it exploded and sank in the Mediterranean; both the Windrush story and that of building the Suez Canal are detailed in an appendix. There is much to find in this story including background histories to events and the politics of the time. As a whole it provides a fascinating account of the era.

Demokrasi: Indonesia in the 21st Century
Indonesia, a nation of thousands of islands and almost 250 million people, straddles the junction of the Pacific and Indian oceans. The world's biggest Muslim nation has long been one of Australia's important strategic partners, and the relationship has become closer - if occasionally fraught - under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. As the country approaches its 2014 presidential elections, its future direction is open. Award-winning journalist Hamish McDonald, an Indonesia expert who authored one of the classic texts on the country, Suharto's Indonesia, returns to the nation he loves, both to tell the story of its past and to consider the possibilities of its future. Now rapidly modernising, Indonesia is, like China before it, becoming a major player on the global stage. It is a force in the world - but for what? How much do we really know about its history, its politics, its cultures and its peoples? Demokrasi- Indonesia in the 21st Century is an accessible and authoritative introduction ot this fascinating young nation.

Double Heider

Double Heider

Hamish Macdonald; Sheena Blackhall

Itchy Coo
2003
nidottu
These two novellas - on related themes but very different in approach and narrative voice - are bound back to back or 'heelstergowdie', the Scots for 'back to front' or 'head over heels'. Loon, by Sheena Blackhall, tells the story of Donnie Paterson and how his troubled life is turned around by the discovery of his missing grandfather in a retirement home and a holiday in the Highlands where he hears a strange story that becomes the key to solving his problems. In Gilbert McGlinchy, by Hamish MacDonald, the eponymous narrator has the weight of the world's woes on his shoulders so sets out to make his drab Clydebank surroundings exotic by embarking on a story-telling journey - the rationale for which only slowly unfolds. Presented in a single volume, these two novellas meet, quite literally, halfway.

Seton Gordon's Scotland

Seton Gordon's Scotland

Hamish M. Brown

Whittles Publishing
2007
pokkari
Seton Gordon was only a boy when he began exploring the Cairngorms, fascinated by its wildlife and seeking to photograph all he saw - he later became a pioneer naturalist, photographer and folklorist. He wrote about the land that is Scotland, her flora and fauna, her people, her spirits, her often violent past. He took the earliest pictures of golden eagles at their eyries and throughout the first half of the 20th century came to know Scotland's remotest corners, amassing a unique photographic record, recording the changing social life of the islands, collecting a mass of folklore and historical stories, lecturing and writing both for regular publications and in 27 books. Like John Muir, he was a wanderer and a guide. We walk with him through pinewoods, to eyries, to the corries of the Cairngorms, we follow him trying to recreate the greenshank's song on his bagpipe chanter; and see him holding a snowball windward of a nesting dotterel to cool its panting.Welcomed in croft or palace, a keen piper, inevitably dressed in kilt and bunnet, Seton Gordon was one of the age's great characters. This selection from his writings gives a fascinating insight of the man and his great versatility. The author, himself a Scottish outdoors enthusiast and well-known author, has been a lifelong admirer of Seton Gordon and his books and has created a book to treasure.

Binary Options

Binary Options

Hamish Raw

HARRIMAN HOUSE PUBLISHING
2008

Binary options are the latest products to hit financial markets. From 5 minute FTSE100 bets offered by online bookmakers, longer duration FTSE100 bets traded on online betting exchanges plus binary bets offered by spreadbetting companies, all are offering the same instrument as the CBOT's binary option on the Fed Funds rate. Hitherto, the largest single marketplace for binary options has been Lloyd's of London where they are known as insurance contracts, while the sports enthusiast is unwittingly buying a binary option every time he takes a price from a sportsbook or bookmaker on this horse or that soccer team. This book takes the same fixed odds bet and illustrates how they operate in the financial marketplace. Binary Options initially outlines regular bets and explains the rationale defining some basic winning and losing bets. A deeper analysis follows in which the author examines how the value of a bet is dependant on the passing of time, the volatility of the underlying instrument plus the price of the underlying instrument.More advanced bets are introduced with the reader then being shown when and how to profitably use binaries in various market conditions, followed by techniques in how to hedge the position entered into. The same format for regular bets is then followed when discussing one-touch bets.In this first in-depth analysis of binary options, Hamish Raw has ambitiously catered for both the end-user and the market-maker. Diagrams are to be found in abundance throughout this book in order to graphically illustrate the author's points.
