Witch Hazel

Gerard X. MacAvoy

Independently Published
2019
nidottu
Gerard X. MacAvoy's first novel, Witch Hazel, is the fictionalized account of his very real life as a 'Chosen One.' Chosen, that is, to have been violated by cancer, not once, but twice at the age of 18 in 1972 when cancer treatment was at its most brutal, and again at 43 when it wasn't much better. The deleterious events on Gerard's uncircumcised, Irish Catholic, Brooklyn born, and New Jersey raised, fictitiously handsome alter ego, Xavier Mack, slanted his outlook on life and death, love and hate, God and sex, and all the other spineless oddities that crawl under our skin and warp our perspectives while we are dreaming. Armed with an ungodly sense of humor, a truckload of challenged memories, and bolstered by an illegally enhanced, mischievous imagination, MacAvoy has crafted this completely original story. Imagine Holden Caulfield with cancer, or perhaps Ferris Bueller. It's a story that takes you deep down into the belly of the beast, where irradiated truth and a glimmer of hope shine brightly.

inspired by true events Hazel Cunningham was born to faithful, loving parents in Kalamazoo, Michigan in December, 1889. She had a severe curvature of her spine and one shortened leg, and there was some talk about why the Lord had allowed that to happen - or whether it was a curse. But Hazel saw no reason why she should be constrained by anyone's expectations, though the taunts from others were distressing. "Midget." "Cripple." "Willful." Stubborn." She had also heard "Brilliant." "Inspired." and "Brava " She adored applause, and she lived for it. Hazel yearned to be an independent, modern woman, and her opportunity came when she was sent away to Mineral Wells Texas to be "cured" of her congenital ailments. There she met Mildred Witherspoon, a generous new friend and confidante; JB Parker, a movie theater owner and mentor; Maria de Jesus, a suffragist; and Charlie Roberts, an awkward fireman nearly two decades older and two feet taller, who fell head-over heels in love with her. She was about to break all the rules with their help.

The eagerly-awaited sequel to Shadowmagic. Having returned to the real world from Tir Na Nog at the end of the last book, our hero Conor finds himself arrested for the murder of his father. When he explains to the cops that his dad is safe and well and enjoying life as king of a land of elves, imps and banshees they understandably think he is a nutcase. That is until he is rescued by Celtic warriors on horseback and taken back to Tir Na Nog, accidentally bringing a policeman with him. Once safely back in The Land, Conor finds that all is not well. His father is dying, the girl he loves is betrothed to another and a rather confused American cop is wandering around causing havoc. It falls to our young hero, and his band of friends, to find a cure for the king. On their epic journey they encounter one of the most mystical and dangerous races in The Land, the shapeshifting Pooka, and find their fates linked in ways they could never have imagined. The Prince of Hazel and Oak is a stunning fantasy adventure that takes fans of Shadowmagic further in to the land and brings back many of the favourite characters from the first book.

Who were the two fifteen-year-old girls from Little Rock—one black, one white—in one of the most unforgettable photographs of the civil rights era?"Through Eckford and Bryan’s tangled lives, [Margolick] hopes to capture the complexity of race, forgiveness, and reconciliation in modern America."—Kevin Boyle, Washington Post"Margolick . . . tells us the amazing story of how Elizabeth and Hazel, as adults, struggled to find each other across the racial divide and in so doing, end their pain and find a measure of peace. We all need to know about Elizabeth and Hazel."—President Bill Clinton The names Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan Massery may not be well known, but the image of them from September 1957 surely is: a Black high school girl, dressed in white, walking stoically in front of Little Rock Central High School, and a white girl standing directly behind her, face twisted in hate, screaming racial epithets. This famous photograph captures the full anguish of desegregation—in Little Rock and throughout the South—and an epic moment in the civil rights movement. In this gripping book, David Margolick tells the remarkable story of two separate lives unexpectedly braided together. He explores how the haunting picture of Elizabeth and Hazel came to be taken, its significance in the wider world, and why, for the next half-century, neither woman has ever escaped from its long shadow. He recounts Elizabeth’s struggle to overcome the trauma of her hate-filled school experience, and Hazel’s long efforts to atone for a fateful, horrible mistake. The book follows the painful journey of the two as they progress from apology to forgiveness to reconciliation and, amazingly, to friendship. This friendship foundered, then collapsed—perhaps inevitably—over the same fissures and misunderstandings that continue to permeate American race relations more than half a century after the unforgettable photograph at Little Rock. And yet, as Margolick explains, a bond between Elizabeth and Hazel, silent but complex, endures.

Known for her fine translations of octosyllabic narrative verse, Patricia Terry presents translations of four major practitioners of this dominant literary form of twelfth- and thirteenth-century France. Her introduction discusses the varying views of women and love in the texts and their place in the courtly tradition. From Chretien de Troyes Terry includes an early work, Philomena, here translated into verse for the first time. The other great writer of this period was Marie de France, the first woman in the European narrative tradition. Lanval is newly translated for this edition, which also features four of Marie's other poems. The collection further includes The Reflection by Jean Renart, known for his realistic settings; and the anonymous Chatelaine of Vergi, a fatalistic and perhaps more modern depiction of love.

Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef is having a bad year. After major back surgery, she moves into her ex-husband's home to be cared for by his new wife. As if that weren't enough to cope with, her octogenarian mother is insisting that Hazel end her dependence on painkillers--an insistence that takes the form of secretly flushing Hazel's stash down the toilet. It's almost a relief when Hazel gets a call about a body found in one of the lakes near Port Dundas. But what raises the hair on the back of her neck is that the local paper has just published the first installment of a serialized story featuring such a scenario. Even before they head out to the lake, she and Detective Constable James Wingate know they are being played. But who is pulling their strings and why are not clear, nor is what they find at the lake at all what they expected. This is no simple drowning accident or even a straightforward murder. It's Micallef herself who is snared, caught up in a cryptic game being played by a maven of the art of deception.
