Even Time Bleeds

Jeanette Lozano Clariond

A vibrant and compelling bilingual edition of poems by the acclaimed Mexican writer Jeanette Lozano Clariond, translated by Pulitzer Prize–winner Forrest GanderEven Time Bleeds is a revelatory selection of the work of Jeannette Lozano Clariond, a major contemporary Mexican poet known for her sensuous lyricism and philosophical gravity. Translated and introduced by Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Forrest Gander, this volume gathers poems from across Clariond’s career and presents the English translations and the original Spanish texts on facing pages. Whether writing about science or Romanticism, childhood or the Chihuahua Desert, ancient Mexican myths or the pandemic of Mexican femicides, Clariond displays a complex self-consciousness that captures much about contemporary identity in Mexico and beyond. Born in 1949 into a Lebanese family that emigrated to Mexico, Clariond has spent much of her life traveling between Mexico, the United States, and Spain, and she writes about varieties of exile and the fearsome complexity of the US–Mexican border with rare insight. Even rarer: she gives voice to her own interiority in a way that is accessible and piercing, as though her true country is inside of each reader.

Crime and Racial Constructions: Cultural Misinformation about African Americans in Media and Academia focuses on how film images of dangerous, hedonistic blacks have assumed greater significance since blacks protested racial injustice during the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It does so by reviewing a number of films that have been released from the 1970s until the present in which black males are depicted as violent and threatening. It likewise considers how these same films represent black females as prostitutes; drug addicts; and irresponsible, abusive mothers who spawn violence in their children. Because these on-screen images of a violent, apolitical, and immoral black underclass find their way into the criminological literature, the book also takes a look at how criminologists use these images to link crime to underclass culture. Both Hollywood and criminologists alike manage to ignore how black activism during the 1960s social movements actually sparked black opposition to the kind of black-on-black crime that is routinely depicted on-screen. By taking a critical look at these negative images, Crime and Racial Constructions seeks to correct some of the distortions that arise from the undue academic and cinematic focus on black criminals at the expense of racially conscious blacks.

Shame, Images of God and the Cycle of Violence

Shame, Images of God and the Cycle of Violence

Jeanette Anderson Good

University Press of America
1999

Theoretically rich and empirically sound, this provocative study demonstrates that shame, a history of childhood corporal punishment, and certain religious beliefs are contributing factors to the cycle of violence that can occur over generations in families. Good begins her study with a thorough survey of the psychological and pastoral literature that deals with issues surrounding shame, corporal punishment, and beliefs about God. She then describes the results of her research that involved having individuals complete questionnaires on childhood punishment, religious practices, and feelings about suicide and depression. These results were then compared with those from tests designed to measure shame, guilt, and violence between adult partners. Good's research suggests that higher levels of violence and shame correspond with punitive images of God and that childhood corporal punishment may result in a higher incidence of adult depression. This fascinating work provides insight into psychological issues that affect many adults today and will be of interest to anyone who is concerned with healing the wounds of those who suffered through childhood violence.

The Champion Buffalo Hunter is the fascinating memoir of one of the most legendary frontiersmen of the early West, “Yellowstone Vic” Smith. Born Victor Grant Smith in 1850, he lived a colorful life across the American frontier from the 1870s to 1890s. A classic frontiersman, he was a trapper, dispatch rider, scout, trick shot—and, yes, buffalo hunter extraordinaire. Discovered in Harvard University’s Houghton Library in 1990, this remarkable autobiography—which Smith wrote in the third person—is comparable to Andrew Garcia’s Tough Trip through Paradise, but, notes the editor, “without the melodrama.” Written in a matter-of-fact, often humorous style, it will engage and entertain all those interested in the lives and times of the men who wandered the West, following the great herds and settling only long enough for the snows to melt. This new edition includes a revised and updated foreword by Jeanette Prodgers based on new research into the life of Yellowstone Vic.

Stitchers of all skill levels will escape to a place of wonder as they crochet 13 imaginative projects for children. The 13 projects are eye-catchingly original and range in difficulty from simple to complex. Each features elements made from yarns that are shiny or glittering or offer some other magical gleam. All offer variations and customizing options for the creative crochet fan to enjoy, and result in beautiful items that can be used to decorate, wear, or play with. The projects are useful anywhere, from living rooms to fantasy worlds, and include essentials like a play crown that can be made in two heights, a backpack with a range of motifs to choose from, a banner perfect for any room, a protective sun hat, a rideable hobbyhorse unicorn, and a set of amazing wings to wear. These delightful designs reflect the reliably successful patterns and instructions that the author's known for among her design customers on Ravelry, at her shop aircrochet.com, and on her social media channels. The 13 projects here are inspired by the author's eureka moment early in her motherhood, when she noticed that children always choose the option that has glitter, and that they agree it's always better to be a unicorn.

Despite the stodgy stereotypes, libraries and librarians themselves can be quite funny. The spectrum of library humor from sources inside and outside the profession ranges from the subtle wit of the New Yorker to the satire of Mad. This examination of American library humor over the past 200 years covers a wide range of topics and spans the continuum between light and dark, from silly parodies to portrayals of libraries and their staffs as objects of fear. It illuminates different types of librarians--the collector, the organization fanatic, the keeper, the change agent--and explores stereotypes like the shushing little old lady with a bun, the male scholar-librarian, the library superhero, and the anti-stereotype of the sexy librarian. By highlighting the humor in this seemingly serious occupation, this study provides invaluable insights into many aspects of the profession and encourages a better appreciation of libraries and librarians in society.
Substance Abuse Prevention in Multicultural Communities

Substance Abuse Prevention in Multicultural Communities

This insightful volume describes a sample of prevention demonstration projects of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). Substance Abuse Prevention in Multicultural Communities illuminates various aspects of prevention theory, practice, and research with a focus on the design, implementation, adaptation, and outcome of specific demonstration programs. Researchers work with prevention professionals to describe, measure, and intensify effects of interventions upon both intermediate problems and the ultimate long-term goal of decreasing substance abuse. Chapters in Substance Abuse Prevention in Multicultural Communities demonstrate how the CSAP demonstration logic model works. The process of prevention program design begins with an analysis of the root causes of the problem as defined by the specific community and illuminated by theory. Comprehensive prevention programs that buttress community strengths and build on local resources are then designed to deal with these problems. The programs you’ll learn from include:a leadership and substance abuse prevention program, based on the social influence model, for girls in grades 6-8 from four geographically and ethnically diverse communitiesa program intricately designed to build resiliency and protective factors within young at-risk American Indian children in a Head Start program which addresses school transition, school readiness, school attendance, and classroom-based prevention activities.a family skills training program for African American parents in substance abuse treatment, which evolved in response to client and evaluation feedbacka program for Native American families, which uses a culturally oriented curriculum emphasizing traditional values, beliefs, and practicesa coalition of neighborhood agencies, organized to provide a comprehensive array of school and community-based prevention services, which impacted gang membership in inner-city Latino youth.a prevention program specifically designed to serve the diverse needs of Asian-American youth from five different Asian ethnic communitiesa model substance abuse prevention program implemented to provide counseling, mentoring, and academic support to Hispanic and African-American students in an urban public middle schoolthe nationally recognized FAST program which strengthens the family and brings parents and schools together in building up protective factors for high risk elementary studentsa program that combines several complementary strategies to develop personal and communal empowerment in Native American communities.Substance Abuse Prevention in Multicultural Communities illustrates the wealth of information generated by demonstration programs. Unlike a standard research protocol that imposes and tests a rigid, single-focused intervention under carefully controlled circumstances, these programs do science in real-life situations, documenting and measuring effects of multiple interventions.
