A companion series to the acclaimed Word Biblical CommentaryFinding the great themes of the books of the Bible is essential to the study of God's Word and to the preaching and teaching of its truths. These themes and ideas are often like precious gems: they lie beneath the surface and can only be discovered with some difficulty. While commentaries are useful for helping readers understand the content of a verse or chapter, they are not usually designed to help the reader to trace important subjects systematically within a given book a Scripture. The Word Biblical Themes series helps readers discover the important themes of a book of the Bible. This series distills the theological essence of a given book of Scripture and serves it up in ways that enrich the preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship of God's people. This commentary focuses exclusively on the two letters written by the 'brothers of the Lord', James and Jude. Each letter is discussed on its own merits, and interpreted as having been written early in the life of the Church - it is posited that the letter of James may be one of the oldest Christian writings as well as an early witness to the teachings of Jesus. Particular attention is devoted to understanding the social worlds of James and Jude and to interpreting the significance of their message for our day. Of special interest is the focus on the 'ideological texture' of James, in particular on James' working out of the ethical implications of the teachings of Jesus on poverty and wealth.

The Letters of Jude and Second Peter: An Introduction and Study Guide
This Guide surveys the more important historical, socio-cultural, theological, and literary factors we must grapple with in understanding the two letters of Jude and Second Peter, between which there are very strong similarities. It appears that the letter of Jude was almost entirely ‘plagiarized’ by the letter of Second Peter. George Aichele‘s main approach is the method of semiotics, examining signifying mechanisms in each of the texts both independently and when they are read together. In both of the letters, Jesus Christ is called the ‘master’, with a Greek word that means ‘slave-owner’, and the authors of both books refer to themselves and other Christians as the slaves of Christ. Furthermore, both writings report situations of paranoid fear within Christian communities of their time as they picture heretical infiltrators who threaten to pervert and perhaps even destroy the community. In addition to this, in an adventurous excursion, the letter of Jude is read intertextually with the classic science fiction/horror film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Siegel 1956), in order to explore the dynamics of paranoia.

Seventy-year old Professor Susan Bridehead is writing an illicit memoir. She's risking a charge of sedition and a death sentence. Her day job is at the Oxford campus of The University of Sydney, where she is writing the History of the Principality of Australia: The First Century. The work has been commissioned by Princess Maureen Macfarlane, whose commoner ancestors excised Australia's landmass from itself and leased it to the international community as a uranium supplier and nuclear fuel storage facility. The Principality of Australia is the world's first virtual state, with its HQ in Oxford's Bodleian Library. The continent of Australia is now known as Patria Nullius-nobody's homeland. Environmentally ruined and mostly depopulated, the landmass is swathed in official secrecy.Susan has her own secret; she was born in Patria Nullius, where she had a brief and tragic marriage to Jude, a mystic who believed his destiny was determined by a bizarre prophecy based on a nineteenth century novel. In failing health and tired of writing fawning hagiographies for the Palace, Susan races to write the story of her survival in the wilderness of Patria Nullius. Will she complete her story before her arrest?

We are living in an age where false teachings abound; where many churches and their denominations make doctrinal decisions that go against the Word of God.In The Letters of Jude and John, prolific author, Marc Wheway, examines these letters, as well as the warnings about false teachers. These letters written more than two thousand years ago are as relevant today more than ever. This book is a compilation of the letters of Jude and John (1, 2, 3) from the New Testament, with reference to Second Peter. These letters were written to early Christian communities to warn them about false teachers leading them astray and encourage them to stand firm in their faith. In addition to emphasizing the importance of holding fast to the truth and loving one another, Jude and John also spoke of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. They warned their readers to be ready for His return and to live in a way that was pleasing to Him, lest they be caught unprepared.Similarly, Second Peter emphasizes the need to be prepared for the return of Jesus Christ, stating: "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn " (2 Pet. 3:10-12).Together, these letters provide a powerful reminder that the return of Jesus Christ is imminent and that we should live our lives in anticipation of this event. They also emphasize the importance of remaining faithful to the Gospel's truth, thus resisting false teachings. This book is an essential resource for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of these important biblical texts and their relevance to their lives in these last days.

The letters of 1 and 2 Peter and of Jude come from a time in Christian history about which we know little; thus they represent rare voices from a crucial time in Christianity's development. And the picture of early Christianity suggested by these letters is a fascinating one.

Historical- critical approaches to Scripture rule out some readings and commend others, but they rarely offer much help to either theological reflection or the preaching of the Word. They do not point the church forward in the life of discipleship. These commentaries have learned from tradition, but they are most importantly commentaries for today. The authors share the conviction that their work will be more contemporary, more faithful, and more radical, to the extent that it is more biblical, honestly wrestling with the texts of the Scriptures.--from the series introductionThe volumes in Belief: A Theological Commentary on the Bible from Westminster John Knox Press offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies, the history of theology, the church's liturgical and musical traditions, contemporary culture, and the Christian tradition, noted scholars focus less on traditional historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the texts. This series is an invaluable resource for those who want to probe beyond the backgrounds and words of biblical texts to their deep theological and ethical meanings for the church today.
