In the first English-language biography of one of the most important figures in postwar German history, Alfred C. Mierzejewski examines the life and service of Ludwig Erhard (1897-1977), West Germany's first minister of economics and second chancellor. Erhard liberalized the German economy in 1948 and is generally considered the father of West Germany's ""economic miracle""--the period of extraordinary growth in jobs and improvement in the standard of living in the 1950s that helped stabilize Germany's first successful democracy. While recent scholarship has dismissed Erhard's influence on Germany's economic recovery, Mierzejewski returns to little-cited German analyses and Erhard's own record and concludes that Allied currency reform and Erhard's liberalization of the economy were crucial triggers for Germany's unprecedented economic boom. Mierzejewski provides insight into Erhard's policies, his ideas, his character, and his relationships with Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle. By offering a fresh account of Erhard's career as a leader in postwar West Germany, Mierzejewski provides a deeper understanding of Germany's economy as well as its democracy.

After the triumph of his intellectual biography, Saint Augustine of Hippo, Miles Hollingworth now turns his attention to one of Augustine's greatest contemporary admirers: the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein has had more influence on post-war philosophical investigation than almost any other and was the de facto founder of logical positivism, a major movement in the philosophical thinking of the Anglo-Saxon world. Yet he was also an Austrian Jewish refugee and a heedless ascetic, who lived a tortured existence in his final years as a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge.Hollingworth continues to pioneer a new kind of biographical writing; here the ingredients are the hypersensitivities of Viennese society in the last part of the 19th Century, Carnegie-like wealth, the aesthetic edifice of Teutonic Ordnung, Wittgenstein's mother's tightrope between hysteria and sentimentality, his brothers' suicides - all compounded with the academic disciplines of mathematical ,linguistic and historical philosophy. This combination created a trajectory of genius and eccentricity. The eccentricity speaks for itself. The genius is more difficult to define. There is no way to describe the genesis of genius except to say that it is inborn. His family, the buns he took to the cinema, his ability to whistle whole concertos note perfect and his Spartan existence - all these form part of the picture - but Wittgenstein lived his life precisely - and note perfectly - so that there should be no story to tell after its finish. He was in a real sense in control of the narrative, which is what makes this book so compellingly interesting.

LARGE PRINT EDITION More at LargePrintLiberty.com.In the 1960s, Ludwig von Mises lectured often on money and inflation. Bettina Bien Greaves was there taking shorthand. She has been working to transcribe them for a very long time. At last the results are here and they are fantastic. To have this work is like having Mises as your private tutor, telling you about money and inflation in a casual setting and in plain language. He is the prophet of the 20th century on these topics, and here he presents his entire apparatus.True, this book is not technically by Mises. It is not something he signed off on. But they are his lectures, and they provide a glimpse into the workings of an incredible mind on a topic that is crucial to our future.

"Don't only practise your art, but force your way into its secrets; art deserves that, for it and knowledge can raise man to the Divine." - Beethoven Among all of history's greatest musicians, few have been as admired or influential as Ludwig van Beethoven, whose name remains synonymous with composing. Works like his Fifth and Ninth symphonies remain instantly recognizable over 200 years after they were composed, and their sweeping and grandiose nature are made all the more amazing by the fact that their author was gradually going deaf and couldn't hear music very well by the time he was composing them. Similarly, the "Moonlight Sonata" and "F r Elise" are renowned across the world and are some of the most famous piano pieces of all time. At the same time, Beethoven's work ushered in a new era in art, helping the transition from the Classical era to the Romantic era. In the 180 years since his death, Beethoven has been enshrined by modern society as one of the most esteemed classical composers in the history of civilization, but he had a profound and immediate influence on the German musical lineage that would pass through Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss all the way to composers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. At a time when music was very much viewed as science, Beethoven was a giant in the field, and as such he was viewed as a genius. As Beethoven himself once put it, "Music is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend." In terms of assessing the essence of Beethoven's era, character or musical output, no unqualified categorization is possible, for he straddled a titanic shifting of social ideologies, performance and compositional practices, intra-continental upheavals and an emergence of the championed self in all forms of civic and artistic expressions. The ideals of the Enlightenment, an intellectual tide that swept throughout the late 18th century and opened the door to a new individualism, did not remain static through his lifetime; Beethoven was shaped by the internal and societal bent for revolutionary thought, and he was eager to play his part as a public figure in reflecting and furthering its development. Indeed, by the late Classical age, which largely deemed music a science, it came to be admitted in even academic circles that "music is the inarticulate outpouring of emotion." Such a changing state of music's relationship to society allowed what some have called Beethoven's Promethean personality to prosper in his creative work. Ludwig van Beethoven: The Life and Music of the Great Composer comprehensively analyzes the themes and revolutionary advancements of Beethoven's music, looking at his most famous works and comparing and contrasting them. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Beethoven and his music like never before, in no time at all.
