Africanizing Anthropology

Africanizing Anthropology

Lyn Schumaker

Duke University Press
2001
pokkari
Africanizing Anthropology tells the story of the anthropological fieldwork centered at the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) during the mid-twentieth century. Focusing on collaborative processes rather than on the activity of individual researchers, Lyn Schumaker gives the assistants and informants of anthropologists a central role in the making of anthropological knowledge. Schumaker shows how local conditions and local ideas about culture and history, as well as previous experience of outsiders’ interest, shape local people’s responses to anthropological fieldwork and help them, in turn, to influence the construction of knowledge about their societies and lives. Bringing to the fore a wide range of actors-missionaries, administrators, settlers, the families of anthropologists-Schumaker emphasizes the daily practices of researchers, demonstrating how these are as centrally implicated in the making of anthropological knowlege as the discipline’s methods. Selecting a prominent group of anthropologists-The Manchester School-she reveals how they achieved the advances in theory and method that made them famous in the 1950s and 1960s.This book makes important contributions to anthropology, African history, and the history of science.

Female voices of the Bible have been silenced throughout much of history. What would it be like to get to know the women of the Bible as real, living figures whose lives can challenge our own? What can we learn from their faith journeys? What would it be like to pray alongside them? Two lively spiritual directors take us into the world of the women of the Bible. Provoked by the desperation of the Canaanite woman, empowered by Mary's fiat, affirmed by the loyalty of Mary Magdalene and challenged by Ruth's fidelity, Doucet and Hebert enter into a new sisterhood with these active and contemplative holy women who emerge out of history. All of the stories link these holy women from the past with contemporary women, all of them longing after God's own heart.

Essential reading for social workers and lawyers alike who serve low-income people entangled in systems that so often fail them. Dorothy Roberts, JD Kirkland & Ellis Professor, Northwestern University School of Law Author, Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare Based on the author's innovative and nationally recognized prototype for inter-professional work at Fordham University, this is the only volume about social work and the legal system that is written from the social worker's perspective. Devoid of "legalese," the book is designed to help social workers develop the ability to reappraise, question, and challenge the law to best serve their clients. It aims to promote the development of a more strategic relationship with the legal system-a partnership that can achieve more creative and just solutions to social problems. Exhaustive in scope, Social Work and the Law identifies current national and international trends and legal movements that support and invite inter-professional, critically competent social work participation. The book also identifies and explains the essential knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary for the attainment of collaborative critical competence when interacting with the legal system. Droitwich with its natural springs has made it the home of salt making since the Bronze Age. The Romans, Saxons and Normans controlled the industry and the wealth it generated, but in the 13th century the town’s burgesses were granted a monopoly by royal charter. For nearly 500 years Droitwich had a stable and prosperous existence as an industrial and market centre. After the ending of the monopoly, salt production increased until the 19th century but as the industry declined the spa town was developed, which flourished into the middle of the 20th century.

They call on God for revenge on their enemies and mercy for themselves. Lyn Fraser, following the lead of Old Testament theologian Walter Brueggemann, shows how to integrate these "psalms of disorientation" in Sunday morning worship, pastoral care, and any situation of extreme need.

Credit Scoring and Its Applications

Credit Scoring and Its Applications

Lyn C. Thomas; Jonathan Crook; David Edelman

Society for Industrial Applied Mathematics,U.S.
2002
pokkari
Tremendous growth in the credit industry has spurred the need for Credit Scoring and Its Applications, the only book that details the mathematical models that help creditors make intelligent credit risk decisions. Creditors of all types make risk decisions every day, often haphazardly. This book addresses the two basic types of decisions and offers sound mathematical models to assist with the decision-making process. The first decision creditors face is whether to grant credit to a new applicant (credit scoring), and the second is how to adjust the credit restrictions or the marketing effort directed at a current customer (behavioral scoring). The authors have filled an important niche with this groundbreaking book. Currently, only the most sophisticated creditors use the models contained in this book to make these decisions, but all creditors can know these aids to successful lending.
