Laurence Sterne

Laurence Sterne

Manfred Pfister

Liverpool University Press
2001
nidottu
Despite the immense popularity of Laurence Sterne’s work during his lifetime, his contribution to the novel form and experimentalism has only been acknowledged since his death. His contemporaries Richardson and Goldsmith denounced his archaic methods and took offence at his playful irreverence but his oddity is never accidental nor perverse; it is the strategy of an inventive, thoughtful, comic talent. Tristram Shandy, perhaps his best loved work, defies convention at every turn, distributing narrative content across a bafflingly idiosyncratic time-scheme interrupted by digressions, authorial comments and interferences with the printed fabric of the book. This comically fragmented story line is a reaction against the linear narratives of Fielding and Richardson; aiming instead at a realistic impressionism, a shape determined by the association of ideas. This study critiques Sterne’s work in the light of modern literary theory, questioning whether he was an artist before his time.

The Roman Cult of Mithras

The Roman Cult of Mithras

Manfred Clauss

Edinburgh University Press
2000
nidottu
Since its publication in Germany, Manfred Clauss's introduction to the Roman Mithras cult has become widely accepted as the most reliable, as well as the most readable, account of its elusive and fascinating subject. For the English edition the author has revised the work to take account of recent research and new archaeological discoveries. The mystery cult of Mithras first became evident in Rome towards the end of the first century AD. During the next two centuries, carried by its soldier and merchant devotees, it spread to the frontier of the western empire from Britain to Bosnia. Perhaps because of odd similarities between the cult and their own religion the early Christians energetically suppressed it, frequently constructing churches over the caves (Mithraea) in which its rituals took place. By the end of the fourth century the cult was extinct. Professor Clauss draws on the archaeological evidence from over 400 temples and their contents including over a thousand representations of ritual in sculpure and painting to seek an understanding of the nature and purpose of the cult, and what its mysteries and secret rites of initiation and sacrifice meant to its devotees. In doing so he introduces the reader to the nature of the polytheistic societies of the Roman Empire, in which relations and distinctions between gods and mortals now seem strangely close and blurred. He also considers the connections of Mithraicism with astrology, and examines how far it can be seen as a direct descendant of the ancient cult of Mitra, the Persian god of contract, cattle and light. The book combines imaginative insight with coherent argument. It is well-structured, accessibly written and extensively illustrated. Richard Gordon, the translator and himself a distinguished scholar of the subject, has provided a bibliography of further reading for anglophone readers.

A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe

A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe

Manfred Pohl; Teresa Tortella

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2001
sidottu
From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.
Contemporary Biblical Hermeneutics

Contemporary Biblical Hermeneutics

Manfred Oeming; translated by Joachim Vette

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2006
nidottu
Appearing in English for the first time, this classic introduction to the field of hermeneutics covers a wide range of approaches to biblical interpretation. Presenting a brief history of philosophical hermeneutics, Manfred Oeming uses a clear structure to emphasize why there are, and why there must be, different and differing approaches to the interpretation of a text, in this case particularly the biblical text. The often confusing multiplicity of approaches to biblical interpretation are introduced along accessible lines, concluding with an argument for an acceptance of a multiplicity of approaches to account for the many layers of the biblical text. Incorporating discussion of the German hermeneutical tradition, exemplified by the work of Heidegger, Bultmann, and Gadamer, this book helps to bridge Anglo-American and German scholarly traditions. It will be of great assistance to students, teachers and preachers.
A Preference for the Poor

A Preference for the Poor

Manfred K. Bahmann

University Press of America
2005
nidottu
A Preference for the Poor tells the story of Latin American Liberation Theology in a succinct and scholarly, yet readable way. Author Manfred Bahmann highlights the emphases of major Latin American liberation theologians; the rise of military dictatorships; the pope's course correction in his 1975 encyclica "Evangelii Nuntiandi," fleshed out at the 1979 Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) conference in Puebla; and the movement's decline with the collapse of world Marxism. Following a description of the phenomenal growth of Pentecostalism on the traditionally Roman Catholic continent, Dr. Bahmann posits a Protestant view of a new Liberation Theology built on a spiritual foundation for Christian believers within a world of global capitalism.
The Phenomenon of Religion

The Phenomenon of Religion

Manfred H. Vogel

University Press of America
2007
nidottu
The Phenomenon of Religion proposes a new way of seeing the bifurcation (a division into two parts or branches) within the religious phenomenon of pagan and biblical religions. In contrast to seeing the bifurcation as monotheism and polytheism, Dr. Manfred Vogel argues for viewing the separation in terms of the "Buberian bifurcation" that divides the It-dimension and the Thou-dimension. The "It-dimension meaning: entities constituting themselves in terms of physical nature, i.e. entities that ultimately ground themselves in a dimension-of-power exemplified by many of their characterizations. The "Thou-dimension" meaning: entities constituting themselves in terms of personhood, i.e. to entities that ultimately ground themselves in the dimension of consciousness. On the basis of a fundamental division in religions, this work presents the case that in contrast to pagan religion, which grounds itself exclusively within the dimension of power, biblical religion grounds itself within the dimension of consciousness-instead of having a God as a power, it gives us God as a person. This revolutionary innovation raises some serious difficulties by biblical religion retaining its hold within the dimension of power. The book proceeds to analyze in detail this problematic innovation and indeed to show that the various expressions constituting biblical religion-Halachic Judaism, Christianity, and Islam-distinguish themselves from each other by varying degrees by which they divide their grounding between power and consciousness. Dr. Vogel's conclusion on the phenomenon of religion concerns secular modernity and its influence over the history and future of religion, particularly Halachic Judaism's emancipation under the "enlightenment" of modernity.

Scottish Common Sense in Germany, 1768-1800

Scottish Common Sense in Germany, 1768-1800

Manfred Kuehn

McGill-Queen's University Press
1987
sidottu
He finds that the work of these philosophers was widely discussed in German philosophical journals and translated into German soon after its publication in Britain. Important German philosophers, such as Mendelssohn, Lossius, Feder, Hamann, and Jacobi, representing the full range of philosophical positions, read the Scots and found valuable philosophical insights in their thought. Kuehn suggests that the most important aspect of their reading was the perception of Scottish common-sense philosophers as opposing Hume's scepticism while complementing his positive teaching. Their views gave considerable impetus to those developments in German thought that ultimately led to Kant's critical philosophy. In fact Kant, whose devastating criticism of the Scottish common-sense philosophers is often cited, learned much from the Scots, as his Critique of Pure Reason reveals. Kuehn's analysis of the Scottish influence provides a new perspective on the German enlightenment and Kant's role within it, revealing the importance of problems of idealism versus realism and of philosophical justification versus mere descriptive metaphysics.
