Edward Burra (1905-76) was an English painter who is best known for his paintings of the seedy underworld of urban life. Yet, as this fascinating new monograph on his work reveals, his interests were much broader, incorporating landscape and still-life paintings, stage designs, book illustration and watercolours. Somewhat neglected by histories of modern art because his singular vision was often at odd with the mainstream art world, his work is now due for a re-appraisal.This important book represents the first full-scale monograph on Edward Burra and reproduces 100 key paintings alongside drawings and a range of fascinating contextual material. It positions Burra as a major figure in the history of 20th-century art, placing his work alongside that of the German Expressionists and other important contemporaries and influences. Long awaited, this book will be widely welcomed by all those with an interest in the art of this fascinating maverick and documenter of modern life.

This is a biography of Martin David Jenkins, President of Morgan State College, who spearheaded changes in the way that America historically viewed privilege as a benefit and responsibility of racial superiority. He honed research skills to lay out a pathway for educators, the US military, and American psychologists to debunk fallacious policies that excluded African Americans and others labeled as "biological races" of presumed inferior intelligence. As a descendant of enslaved persons and sharecroppers, a son of The Great Migration, and a benefactor of integrated experiences, he was consumed by the economic disparities and lack of opportunity between Black and White people. He learned early the importance of education in disrupting such differences. Using methods of research, he was able to influence decision-makers and leaders to try harder to level the playing field for every person in the American democracy. The book introduces his parents, grandparents, and life-long influencers in his future decision-making. Through them, he recognizes the importance of being literate, informed, and involved in the civil rights of everyone. His positions at various HBCUs not only sharpened his intuition for uplifting others but also prepared him to accept the presidency of Morgan State College when it was offered to him in 1948. For twenty-two years, he educated young adults, guided their emerging decision-making and leadership, and set them free to assume their places in an egalitarian society they would be challenged to structure. Thousands of today's senior citizens continue to pass down to their descendants the wisdom of instructors who were committed to Martin Jenkins' way of individual uplift, total integration, and solutions to problems based on data, analysis, and synthesis.

'There are shades of Highsmith here, and Wilde's Dorian Gray. This novel is marvellous and unmissable' THE TIMES'Valerie Martin is a goddess. Her prose is so sharp, intense and wickedly witty, you'll whip through this story like lightning... Glamour, intrigue and passions run high in this scintillating novel' EASY LIVING'Martin draws us skilfully and boldly into a world in which near drownings, lost loves, stalkers and the loaded gun which must finally go off, are not nearly as terrifying as the unknowability of the human psyche' DAILY TELEGRAPHIn the seamy theatre world of 1970s New York, where rents are cheap and love is free, aspiring actor Edward Day joins his friends for a summer weekend on the New Jersey Shore. But something happens - and Edward's life will never be the same again. He is saved from drowning by the mysterious Guy Margate, a man with whom he shares both a marked physical resemblance and an implacable attraction to the beautiful, talented, neurotic Madeleine. Ever after, in encounters provoked by envy and resentment, Edward is torn between his desire for Madeleine and his indebtedness to the querulous Guy. Professional and personal jealousies come to a head when Edward is cast opposite Madeleine in an acclaimed production of Uncle Vanya, their respective roles painfully mirroring the reality of their personal situations. As the sexual tensions of the play spill over outside the theatre walls, Guy - Edward's reluctant saviour and now Madeleine's husband - makes the ultimate act of protest...
Birmingham Revolution – Martin Luther King Jr.`s Epic Challenge to the Church
From time to time prophetic Christian voices rise to challenge our nation's "original sin." In the twentieth century, compelled by the Spirit of God and a yearning for freedom, the African American church took the lead in heralding the effort. Like almost no other movement before or since, Christian people gave force to a social mission. And, remarkably, they did it largely through nonviolent actions. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words and historic efforts as the Moses of this civil rights movement stand out as perhaps the most significant instance of a modern Christian leader acting in a prophetic role to instigate political change. In many ways "The Letter from Birmingham Jail" stands at the center of that movement. In this book African American journalist Edward Gilbreath explores the place of that letter in the life and work of Dr. King. Birmingham Revolution is not simply a work of historical reflection. Gilbreath encourages us to reflect on the relevance of King's work for the church and culture of our day. Whether it's in debates about immigration, economic redistribution or presidential birth certificates, race continues to play a role in shaping society. What part will the church play in the ongoing struggle?
