"The drawings and photos allow us to revel in the imagery and history of that unforgettable night, and the torrid pace of the storytelling, the many flashbacks allow us to see the full context of the fight" - The Ring Award-winning writer JD Morvan and renowned photographer Abbas' stunning graphic novel masterpiece which uses iconic photos to uniquely illustrate the historical 'Rumble in the Jungle' boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. On the 30 th October 1974, the most famous boxing match of the 20 th Century took place. Nicknamed the "Rumble in the Jungle", it pitted Muhammad Ali, desperate to win back his world champion belt, and George Foreman, the current holder, against each other. Foreman had just KO'd the only two boxers to have ever beaten Ali. By his own admission, Ali was terrified of facing him in the ring... Now, the photojournalist Abbas immortalises this legendary meeting, having kept his photos in his personal archives for 36 years before unveiling them to the world. In a cross between a documentary, photo report and graphic novel, this book reveals the context of the most powerful photographs taken by one of the greatest photographers of the Magnum Photos agency. Enriched by the testimony of Abbas himself, Jean-David Morvan's script is rigorously brought to life by artist Rafael Ortiz.

Between defeat by Trevor Berbick in December 1981 and lighting the Olympic flame in Atlanta in July 1996, Muhammad Ali spent the 15 most turbulent years of his life traversing the globe, seeking a higher purpose. Depending on the day, the retired champion could be a diplomat trying to liberate hostages in the Middle East, a salesman flogging cookies and cologne across America, or an amateur magician performing sleights of hand everywhere from prison yards to school halls to Valentino fashion shows. Sometimes hilarious, often terribly poignant, this kaleidoscopic account of the most bizarre episodes in his epic life chronicles Ali preaching Islam, causing havoc and touching lives from Beijing to Birmingham, Detroit to Damascus, Khartoum to the Khyber Pass. One minute hanging with Donald Trump, the next with Nelson Mandela, even as his own body and mind battled the onset of Parkinson's Syndrome, here are so many previously untold stories about 'The Greatest' treating statesmen and strangers, popes and paupers just the same.

How to approach the complex intellectual legacy of a modern Muslim thinker like Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905)? This book offers an answer to this question by providing a new complete intellectual biography of him. It delineates ‘Abduh’s formation as a reformer and activist and embeds his varied intellectual contributions in a culture of ambiguity which has marked the intellectual life of Muslim societies throughout their history.By using new sources – in particular his early mystical, philosophical and political writings – and including recent academic contributions on him, the book explores ‘Abduh’s complex intellectual formation, the various religious, philosophical and cultural influences that shaped him, and his changing attitudes towards “Western modernity” and its colonial manifestation in the 19th century. Oliver Scharbrodt challenges the perception in academic scholarship - and among Muslim reformers of the 20th century - that searched for intellectual coherence and biographical consistency in ‘Abduh’s life. Instead, this book offers a new more comprehensive reading of his intellectual legacy and highlights the variety of approaches and ideas manifest in his contributions.
Muhammad Ali in Africana Cultural Memory
One critical priority of the discipline of Africana studies is applied memory, specifically, how the record of the culture’s survival and agency reveals usable and reproducible knowledge and behavior. In terms of how Muhammad Ali, as an historical actor, has left an heroic legacy that bequeaths to us a sort of inheritance, the critical task at hand is to systematically explore this historical actor’s life, feats, philosophy, grit, worldview, and even his folkloric antihero to decipher his Africana cultural memory value. At the core of this edited collection is a commitment to enhance the cultural storytelling about Muhammad Ali and to critically itemize the lessons we garner from his life as allegory. The ancestral life is one that is remembered and recalled. The contributors’ research uncovers Ali’s local, national, and global encounters that are legacy worldviews. These perspectives give us direction for mining the critical depth of Ali’s encounters which map his memory in terms of culturally sustaining confidence, self-esteem, reinvention, immortalization, and empathy. These are the fertile seeds of Africana cultural memory which bloom into powerful markers and monuments of an epic life of hyperheroic activity relevant to cultural memory, sports, history, politics, health, and aesthetics.

Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) is widely regarded as the founder of Islamic modernism. Egyptian jurist, religious scholar and political activist, he sought to synthesise Western and Islamic cultural values. Arguing that Islam is essentially rational and fluid, Abduh maintained that it had been stifled by the rigid structures implemented in the generations since Muhammad and his immediate followers. In this absorbing biography, Mark Sedgwick examines whether Abduh revived true Islam or instigated its corruption.
Muhammad (s): 11 Leadership Qualities That Changed the World
EACH OF YOU ARE A SHEPHERD AND EACH OF YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIER FLOCK This profound statement by Prophet Muhammad (s) compels us to recognise that we are all leaders at some level. But what makes someone a good leader? And how does each and everyone of us measure up against the leadership standards set by the Prophet? This book presents a well researched leadership framework combined with extensively applied contemporary practitioner case studies for the first time to readers interested in a Sirah (prophetic life) based universal model for good leadership. Drawing upon scholarly findings from eastern and western sources, and having examined an extensive range of works on Sirah, an original framework of eleven prophetic leadership qualities are presented with an entire chapter devoted to each. Well known and lesser known events from the Sirah are explored and analysed like never before, and viewed with a specialist leadership lens, extracting insights on effective people management, authentic leadership and succeeding against the odds. Each chapter on leadership qualities offers not only what the quality means and where it can be found in the life of the Prophet, but how one can develop those qualities within themselves as well.

Poetry. African & African American Studies. MUHAMMAD'S MOUNTAIN, the first-ever book-length collection of poetry on the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali, consists of 45 poems, tracing the entire spectrum of outward events and inner forces that made Ali one of the most recognized figures in the world--the boyhood years in Louisville, Ali's rise to the top of the boxing world, his conviction and subsequent government-imposed exile for refusing to be inducted into the military, Ali's return to the ring, and the final phase of his life in which he battled Parkinson's disease while serving as an ambassador for world peace. But as Charles deGravelles, author of the best seller, Billy Canon: A Long, Long Run, notes, This is no boxing book. The complex--even seemingly contradictory--nature of this towering figure is explored poem by poem, carrying with it along the way the sweep of the second half of the American twentieth century.

The book highlights some difficulties the prophet PBUH]of Islam had undergone when he presented his message to the world. There were four parties who were responsible for the troubles in order to protect either their tribal proud or to defend false beliefs people had at that particular time. The Quraysh were at the forefront of the campaign because Islam challenged their beliefs, culture and way of life. When the Prophet PBUH]was forced to leave his homeland and arrived at Madinah new people joined hands with Quraysh. Idolaters of Arab region known as Hajaaz felt the same pain as their 'Quraysh brethren' were. Jews of the new land could not stay behind in the 'noble' cause; so, they played their role as well. A new breed of opponents emerged in the new land i.e. the hypocrites. Since they claim they were Muslims therefore, they were most dangerous for the new religion. However, the Prophet PBUH]overcomes all of them successfully and installed the pillars of a faith which would live for the rest of time.

Muhammad, Mecca and the Qur'an: : In Search of the Original Qur'anic Community Vol. II

H. Thomas Becket

In the two volumes of Muhammad, Mecca and the Qur'an: In Search of the Original Qur'anic Community, H. Thomas Becket delves into available historical, archaeological, linguistic, theological and other available evidence that offers insights into the origins of Islam. He presents important findings of respected scholars of Islamic history that challenge traditional stories of Islamic origins. Just as Christian scholars long ago began the search for the historical Jesus, modern Western scholars recently began the search for the historical Muhammad. Becket's new book expands on the efforts of the first volume in the search for the historical origins of the Qur'an and Islam by seeking the original Qur'anic community, rather than Muhammad, to understand those origins. The author relies on scholarly studies that describe the prerequisites needed for the original community to understand the Qur'an. The author then asks whether the Qur'anic community that is able to understand the Qur'an corresponds with that described in the traditional stories of the origin of Islam (the hadith)? Any failure of the Qur'anic community as described in the hadith to suggest a community that could realistically serve as the original audience for the recitation of the Qur'anic text would indicate at the most fundamental level the lack of historicity of the hadith. Muhammad, Mecca and the Qur'an: Search for the Original Qur'anic Community will ... -Explode the myths of the origin of Islam in Mecca among illiterate pagans living in ignorance of Judaism and Chritianity; -Question the possibility of Arabic as the original language of the Qur'anic text; -Demonstrate the relationship of doctrines advocated in the Qur'an to sectarian Christian debates and specific Christian theologians of the 4th-7th centuries; -Connect many passages and several large segments of the Qur'an to the Bible, non-canonical sources and specific Syriac authors; -Challenge the traditional tales of the Islamic conquests. In the two volumes of Muhammad, Mecca and the Qur'an: Search for the Original Qur'anic Community, H. Thomas Becket challenges all that you think you know about Muhammad and the origins of Islam. He offers exciting new conclusions as to Islamic origins based on the scholarly literature which he cites at great length. Becket argues that acceptance of the historical origin of the Qur'anic text within Christendom may lead to greater humility among both Christians and Muslims. Such recognition requires Christians to acknowledge that sectarian Christian conflicts underlie many of the alleged violent passages of the Qur'an. Muslims also must admit that their scripture, as all religious scripture, has its origin within human history and its origins story constitutes salvation history to the same degree as the stories of the origins of Christianity and Judaism. Ultimately, history shows that faith, rather than historical certainty, underlies all three great historical religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
