Biener, in: Grawe/N rnberger 2000: 985). Doch was macht Fontanes Werke so beliebt f r Film und Fernsehen?

Since studying with Anthony Gormley and Timm Ulrichs, Josef Rainer (*1970) has created an artistic world theatre made up of incidental and overlooked things, in which perspectives and proportions communicate, big things move out of view, and small things appear on the stage. In his new book, the honeycomb architecture of bees, shrunken human beings in urban surroundings, speaking busts, and reading primates encounter one another. Supplemented by forays into mythology, the history of human development, science, and politics, all of this forms the material for a wondrous 'art chamber' in book form. Text in English, German and Italian.

Master of overpainting – experience the fascinating oeuvre of Arnulf Rainer. The art of Arnulf Rainer (*1929) is baffling. The “black overpainting”, with which he covers previous work, is world famous. We overlook the fact that overpaintings in red, blue, green and white also exist and thus that colour always belonged to his means of expression, as this volume vividly demonstrates. Characteristic of Rainer’s work is not only the use of paint, but also the way that he applies it, as the energetic use of physical strength in his hand and finger paintings from the 1970s and 1980s shows. At the end of this period he changed over to a more transparent painting method and used broad brushes to apply the paint like a veil. The visually stunning publication presents works from widely differing series, including Blattmalerei, Engel, Geologica, Goya, Landschaften, Mikrokosmos and Makrokosmos.

The modifier bb Auto, founded in Frankfurt, 1973 by Rainer Buchmann and his brother Dieter, caused a stir in the European and international car scene of the '80s. Their technical innovations and spectacular design made them stand out from the crowd. Initially focused on Porsche cars, bb established themselves as a name to be remembered when they presented their Porsche Turbo Targa with prismatic coloured varnish on the Polaroid stand at Fotokina 1976 Cologne. At IAA Frankfurt 1979 they launched bb CW 311, a contemporary modification of the legendary Mercedes 300 SL. Mercedes-Benz was so enthusiastic about the car that they allowed Buchmann to continue using the Mercedes star as a brand logo. During the 1980s, bb was one of the most successful modifiers of production cars. They transformed off-the-line automobiles into bespoke luxury vehicles for those who could afford it - customers from the Arab world, celebrities from the jet-set, and many more... However Buchmann's real passion belonged to the area of electronic innovations. The money he earned with his tuning activities was invested into research in this field. He was the first to think about centralised door locking by means of remote control as well as parking distance control and he invented the first car computers. In 1983 his multi-function steering wheel was protected by patent. This comprehensive book, produced in close co-operation with Merck Group, one of the world's leading chemical companies for whom Buchmann popularised a new and special kind of bright enamel varnish, presents the complete history of Rainer Buchmann's technical and entrepreneurial achievements.

The Quiet Storms of Rainer Maria Rilke

The Quiet Storms of Rainer Maria Rilke

Rilke's quiet poems contain exceptional pent-up energy that encompasses the immediacy, wonder, and breathlessness with which the poet experienced life. His unique, spiritual connection with the world, so easily lost in a formal or literal translation, is opened up in these fresh interpretations from Terrance Lane Millet. The English versions of Rilke's poems are very loose translations from the German. An epiphany-like view of the world and the elements in it, more than the form of the poems themselves, seems to be the essence of Rilke. The poet is laid bare, and Millet's fresh use of convention reveals Rilke's openness to the mystery of experience. The poems in this collection explore Rilke's sense that out of darkness may come light and wonder; from turbulence, peace and integration; and that understanding can come through embracing what we do not understand. A certain, indefinable something hovers just out of eyeshot, as the things we fear may be little more than unexplored aspects of ourselves.
Poems by Rainer Maria Rilke: A 150th Anniversary Reader
Rainer Maria Rilke wrote many short lyric poems of remarkable beauty and intensity. In honor of Rilke's 150th birthday, Donald Mace Williams has selected some of the best and brought these works of one of the 20th century's most influential poets to English-speaking audiences. Williams's translations capture the eloquence and character of Rilke's own words while preserving the metrical verse of the original poems, which are presented side-by-side with the English translations. Williams's translation of "The Girl Grown Up," included in this collection, was selected as the winner of the 2024 Der Hovanessian Translation Prize by the New England Poetry Club.
