The finest teachers attempt to make direct connections between classroom knowledge and its application to the varieties of practice. Ray Fox emphasizes that a teacher of future practitioners must expand upon lectures and mere memorization; the interaction between teacher and student should substantially model ones that students are encouraged to employ with clients. The Use of Self presents an active, learner-centered process of professional education that emphasizes relationships and reflection in the classroom. The book shows how teachers can establish classroom environments of sharing, openness, challenge, and change. According to the author, the goal of higher education is to mold students into scientifically sophisticated, humane, and client-centered practitioners with knowledge grounded in discipline and skills anchored in art and compassion. This book will help professors accomplish this goal. Part 1 integrates conceptual knowledge with affective and experiential processes. These chapters focus on artistry and creativity in teaching. Part 2 describes methods to help students establish a sound professional identity and prepare for effective professional functioning. The author presents ways to involve students in adapting course content and direction so as to merge their styles of learning with the instructor's style of teaching, thus providing an environment conducive to shaping professional minds. Part 3 provides teaching methods and tools that promote reflection and encourage students to relate to classmates and, eventually, clients.
Techniques of Special Effects of Cinematography
First published in 1985. Exactly 20 years have passed since the first edition of this text appeared, in 1965. During this period, the author has gathered feedback from professional film-making circles. This fourth revision introduces new information in nearly all chapters. 130 new illustrations have been added, many of them illustrating feature films which are currently in release. The bibliography has also been enlarged considerably. The contributions of the visual-effects cinematographer have always been valued highly within the theatrical motion-picture industry. Because of their work, film producers have been able to endow their pictures with considerable 'production value' which the budget could not otherwise sustain.

Originally published in 1978, this study presents a detailed analysis of the major literary movements in Austria and Germany from the end of the nineteenth century to the collapse of the Third Reich. It examines the plethora of literary genres which marked the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century: the short-lived Naturalist movement rapidly giving way to various forms of symbolism and neo-romanticism. The situation in Vienna is studied in detail; the concept of modernism vis-à-vis expressionism with special regard to Rilke and Kafka. The literature of the Weimar period is also analysed, with emphasis on the symphonic novels of the time and the anti-illusionist devices of Brecht. It also draws a comparison between the literary situation in Nazi Germany and the literature of exile, and the positions of Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Brecht and Gottfried Benn are examined.

“Primitive Polynesian Economy is one of the first serious attempts to apply the concepts of modern economic theory to the institutions of a primitive community, studied by anthropological field methods. In the small Polynesian island of Tikopia, Raymond Firth was able in the course of a year to observe and analyze in remarkable detail the economic transactions of the thirteen hundred inhabitants of a primitive peasant economy of agriculturalists and fishermen. For the second edition, he has written a new chapter discussing the changes that have taken place since the book was first published.
Religion: A Humanist Interpretation
Religion: A Humanist Interpretation represents a lifetime's work on the anthropology of religion from a rather unusual personal viewpoint. Raymond Firth treats religion as a human art, capable of great intellectual and artistic achievements, but also of complex manipulation to serve the human interests of those who believe in it and operate it. His study is comparative, drawing material from a range of religions around the world. Its findings are a challenge to established beliefs. This anthropological approach to the study of religion covers themes ranging from; religious belief and personal adjustment; gods and God; offering and sacrifice;religion and politics; Malay magic and spirit mediumship; truth and paradox in religion.
