Since the publication of Serena in 2008 earned him a nomination for the PEN/Faulkner fiction prize, Ron Rash (b. 1953) has gained attention as one of the South's finest writers. Rash draws upon his family's history in Appalachia, where most members have worked with their hands as farmers or millworkers. In the Grit Lit or Rough South genre, Rash maintains a prominent place as a skilled craftsman and triple threat, publishing four collections of poetry, six short story collections, and six novels. Though best known as an Appalachian writer, Rash's reach has grown to extend well beyond Appalachia and the American South, spreading to an international audience.Conversations with Ron Rash collects twenty-two interviews with the award-winning author and provides a look into Rash's writing career from his first collection of short stories, The Night the New Jesus Fell to Earth in 1994 through his 2015 novel, Above the Waterfall. The collection includes four interviews from outside the United States, two of which appear in English for the first time. Spanning sixteen years, these interviews demonstrate the disciplined writing process of an expert writer, Rash's views of literature on a local and a global scale, his profound respect for the craft of the written word, and his ongoing goal to connect with his readers.

The Legacy of Ron Gonnella

The Legacy of Ron Gonnella

Jane MacMorran

University of Tennessee Press
2025
nidottu
In the latter half of the twentieth century, Ron Gonnella’s extensive discography played a pivotal role in reviving interest in traditional Scottish fiddling, particularly in the United States. Jane MacMorran’s The Legacy of Ron Gonnella offers an in-depth exploration of this legendary fiddler whose influence has largely been overlooked in mainstream music history. MacMorran situates the musician’s work within the cultural shifts of the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s—decades that witnessed multiple folk music revivals as Gonnella’s career developed in a niche tradition. This book reintroduces Gonnella as a significant figure whose contributions to Scottish fiddling helped shape performance standards and influence future generations of musicians. Beginning in Barga, Italy, and traveling through Scotland before arriving in North America, Gonnella’s life and work reflect a complex dialogue between cultures, historical periods, and musical traditions. MacMorran examines how Gonnella’s work was shaped by and helped shape various musical communities, showing that he was an active participant in the ongoing evolution of Scottish fiddling. Through oral histories, archival material, and interviews with musicians who performed with or were influenced by Gonnella, the author uncovers a vibrant narrative of cross-cultural exchange. The result is a rich portrayal of Gonnella’s life-long contribution to Scottish fiddling and a case for his inclusion in the wider narrative of traditional music history.

"Battlefield Scientology: Exposing L.Ron Hubbard's Dangerous Religion" contains 33 articles (& over 50 photos) from Tony Ortega's popular blog ("The Underground Bunker) with intros to the 5 sections by Paulette Cooper ("The Scandal of Scientology." )At last two of the best-known Scientology expos writers team up to tell the whole story... from Scientology celebrities, (and how the church uses and abuses them) to the Sea Org (Scientology's highest level where members who join sign billion-year-contracts to work for them throughout their entire lives) to mysterious deaths, to fair game (from the viewpoint of the attackers as well as the victims) to how Hubbard got some of his (weirder) ideas, to Scientology today (including signs of their decline) and much more. This book was written for people who (think they) know just about everything there is to know about Scientology, to those who know nothing; the stories range from early Hubbard to what is happening today. The chapters were chosen to appeal not only to former Scientologists, but also never-Scientologists, as well as to people who never bought a single book of theirs to those who spent most of their lives and some believe, even their past lives] in it.The 360+ pages and photos reflect not only that what's interesting, but also what's important in understanding what has happened in this church, right down to what's happening today.Tony Ortega has been chronicling events in Scientology since the early '90's and Paulette Cooper wrote the first major expos of Scientology ("The Scandal of Scientology") in 1968. She then spent the next 15 years exposing them while they went after her with vengeance. This is chronicled in Tony's first book, "The Unbreakable Miss Lovely."

Queer Communion - Ron Athey

Queer Communion - Ron Athey

Amelia Jones; Andy Campbell

Intellect Books
2019
nidottu
Ron Athey is one of the most important, prolific, and influential performance artists of the past four decades. A singular example of lived creativity, his radical performances are odds with the art worlds and art marketplaces that have increasingly dominated contemporary art and performance art over the period of his career. Queer Communion, an exploration of Athey's career, refuses the linear narratives of art discourse and instead pays homage to the intensities of each mode of Athey's performative practice and each community he engages. Emphasizing the ephemeral and largely uncollectible nature of his work, the book places Athey's own writing at its center, turning to memoir, memory recall, and other modes of retrieval and narration to archive his performances. In addition to documenting Athey's art, ephemera, notes, and drawings, the volume features commissioned essays, concise "object lessons" on individual objects in the Athey archive, and short testimonials by friends and collaborators by contributors including Dominic Johnson, Amber Musser, Julie Tolentino, Ming Ma, David Getsy, Alpesh Patel, and Zackary Drucker, among others. Together they form Queer Communion, a counter history of contemporary art.
