How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life

As a young speechwriter in the Reagan White House, Peter Robinson was responsible for the celebrated "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech. He was also one of a core group of writers who became informal experts on Reagan -- watching his every move, absorbing not just his political positions, but his personality, manner, and the way he carried himself. In How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life, Robinson draws on journal entries from his days at the White House, as well as interviews with those who knew the president best, to reveal ten life lessons he learned from the fortieth president -- a great yet ordinary man who touched the individuals around him as surely as he did his millions of admirers around the world.

The play gives a behind-the-scenes look into a narcissistic's Presidential campaign, from the decision to run, to the election, to the day before he assumes the Presidency. The Clean-Shaven Secretary with the Pistol: What happens when a theatre company attempts to stage a short period drama, and the producers decide, without warning, to insert a commercial break? Dark and Stormy Night: An autumn night, a desolate diner, and a lonely, beautiful waitress. Enter a man dressed like an L.L. Bean model and carrying a splitting maul. Is he a murderer or her romantic salvation? Front Page Above the Fold: At a local city daily newspaper, competition between reporters for the front page story is fierce. So fierce, it's personal. Kansas City This is Former Air Force One: August 9, 1974-the day President Richard Nixon resigned his office. Oh, to be a fly on the wall during his flight home But wait...in this play, you are. * All of the plays in this collection may be performed royalty-free by amateur theater companies (high schools, colleges and community theatre groups).

This volume utilises the personal papers of Sir Ronald Storrs, as well as other archival materials, to make a microhistorical investigation of his period as Governor of Jerusalem between 1917 and 1926.It builds upon Edward Said’s work on the Orientalist ‘determining imprint’ by arguing that Storrs took a deeply personal approach to governing the city; one determined by his upbringing, his education in the English private school system and his service as a British official in Colonial Egypt. It recognises the influence of these experiences on Storrs’ perceptions of and attitudes towards Jerusalem, identifying how these formative years manifested themselves on the city and in the Governor’s interactions with Jerusalemites of all backgrounds and religious beliefs. It also highlights the restrictions placed on Storrs’ approach by his British superiors, Palestinians and the Zionist movement, alongside the limitations imposed by his own attitudes and worldview. Placing Storrs’ personality at the centre of discussion on early Mandate Jerusalem exposes a nuanced and complex picture of how personality and politics collided to influence its everyday life and built environment. The book is aimed at historians and students of the late-Ottoman Empire and British Mandate in Palestine, colonialism and imperialism, and microhistory.
President Ronald Reagan's Initial Actions Project
When Ronald Reagan took office, he was facing an economic downturn similar to the one our country is currently experiencing. Key members of Reagan’s staff prepared an Initial Actions Project, which takes every branch of government, including Congress, into consideration, and offers a clear and concise blueprint of how Reagan’s economic policies were achieved. As a model for President Obama, who is dealing with the daunting demands of a nation in turmoil, the significance of this report has never been more timely. History proves that President Reagan’s policies led to economic growth; will President Obama overturn this invaluable legacy? Only time—and history—will tell.Featuring a special Introduction by Arthur B. Laffer, who also worked in the Reagan White House, President Ronald Reagan’s Initial Actions Project puts the IAP action plan in perspective and provides valuable insight into the most important economic issues of our time.

On November 4, 1980, American voters gave Ronald Reagan a 41-state Electoral College landslide. The man this mandate carried into the White House was largely compounded of mythology. Like most compelling mythologies, Reagan's was a synthesis of celebrity as well as emotional, intellectual, and cultural streams. Throughout his eight years in the oval office, the "Great Communicator" was largely successful in shaping the soul of America to reflect his durable mantra that "government is the problem." That same American soul later embraced Donald Trump--a president who, the authors argue, would have appalled Reagan. Reagan's myth persists, and by understanding his time in office in the context of American history and of the American presidency, we can understand how a transformative president created more than policy by also shaping culture with the instrumental force of mythology. This book attempts to neither praise nor bury Reagan but to explain him in non-partisan terms of contemporary popular mythology. The authors examine his legacy in his war on "big government," which still drives politics, economic policy, and culture, even in Trump's era. They make the case that understanding the mythology at work is a necessary step toward healing American politics and saving American democracy.
