Ursula Franklin Speaks

As a distinguished scientist, pacifist, and feminist, Ursula Franklin has been regularly invited by diverse groups to share her insights into the social and political impacts of science and technology. This collection contains twenty-two of Franklin's speeches and five interviews from 1986 to 2012 that have been retrieved and restored from audio and visual recordings with the help of her collaborator, Jane Freeman. These speeches and interviews, available here in print for the first time, stress the increased need for discernment and principled dialogue among Canadians. Although civic life for many Canadians has changed drastically in the past five decades, the basic principles of building and maintaining peaceful communities remain unchanged. Addressing practices of education, research, and civic life, Franklin looks to the past as well as the future to suggest collective ways of cultivating discernment and of advancing human betterment. As a whole, the collection reveals the evolution of Franklin's perspective: a perspective that is further elaborated in her afterthoughts that form the book's introduction and conclusion. Although her speeches and interviews are often critical of the status quo, Ursula Franklin Speaks is a fundamentally optimistic book, grounded in the conviction of the human capacity for compassion and understanding.

From Plato to Lancelot

From Plato to Lancelot

K. Sarah-Jane Murray

Considered the most important figure in medieval French literature, Chretien de Troyes is credited with inventing the modern novel. The roots of his influential Arthurian romance narratives remain the subject of investigation and great debate among medieval scholars. In ""From Plato to Lancelot"", K. Sarah-Jane Murray makes a highly original and profoundly significant contribution to current scholarship by locating Chretien's work at the intersection of two important traditions: one derived from Greco-Roman antiquity, the other from the Celtic world of the Atlantic seaboard.Drawing on a broad range of sources, from Plato's ""Timaeus"" and Ovid's ""Metamorphoses"" to the anonymous Ovidian tales translated in the twelfth century and Marie de France's ""Lais"", Murray demonstrates that Chretien and his contemporaries learned the importance of translation from the Mediterranean-centered classical tradition. She then turns to the Celtic world, examining how Irish monastic scholarship, as demonstrated by the Voyage of St. Brendan and Celtic saints' lives, influenced the cultural identity of medieval Europe and paved the way for an interest in Celtic stories and legends. With penetrating insight and lucid prose, Murray locates Chretien's singular genius in his ability to look to the future and to lay the foundations for a thoroughly new, and French, tradition of vernacular storytelling.

Parasitology

Parasitology: An Integrated Approach, provides a concise, student-friendly account of parasites and parasite relationships that is supported by case studies and suggestions for student projects. The book focuses strongly on parasite interactions with other pathogens and in particular parasite-HIV interactions, as well as looking at how host behaviour contributes to the spread of infections. There is a consideration of the positive aspects of parasite infections, how humans have used parasites for their own advantage and also how parasite infections affect the welfare of captive and domestic animals. The emphasis of Parasitology is on recent research throughout and each chapter ends with a brief discussion of future developments. This text is not simply an updated version of typical parastitology books but takes an integrated approach and explains how the study of parasites requires an understanding of a wide range of other topics from molecular biology and immunology to the interactions of parasites with both their hosts and other pathogens.

Your Bumper Car Life: A Biofeedback Guide to Staying in the Ring

Your Bumper Car Life: A Biofeedback Guide to Staying in the Ring

Being my back ground for a good portion of my professional life has been focused in teaching relaxation skills with the use of biofeedback training, I thought it would be fun to write a humorous book which might intrigue you to seek out training in your area or via virtual lessons which I will be posting soon on my YouTube channel.Bumper Car Biofeedback takes into account a number of different types of personalities that we all commonly see out in the world (or the ring in this case) and how they respond or react to the world around them. Reactions and responses effect how our physiology health manifests, or in this case, how the bumper car engine runs. It's meant to help you look at your life in a humorous way and make changes as wanted or needed. This is my hope for you - clarity of who you are, The following chapters will be about a few of the different personalities of bumper cars that came into my thought process. There are many more that I could describe, and you can think of these yourselves - I have no doubt. I have some thought about how each of these would read in terms of their engine health, so I hope you find this interesting as well as amusing I would love for you to give me feedback after you read - maybe some insight you gained or greater understanding you developed in the process. Each book we read teaches us a little more about ourselves. I hope this adds to that how to recover more quickly, and find your flow once again from the center of your being. When we begin taking everything in life too seriously, we short change our immune system....or in this case, our engines, and we become ill or broken. My message here is - lighten up. Don't take anything personally. We are here to play and have some fun in a responsible kind of way We are here to enjoy our lives.
