The Finest Wines of Germany: A Regional Guide to the Best Producers and Their Wines
Coming from the coolest of the classic European wine countries, where grapes ripen slowly, German wine is about much more than just fruit. It's about balance, mineral freshness, depth of aroma and flavor, and also a miraculous lightness. Exemplified by the finest Rieslings, German wine displays contradictory characteristics of subtlety and intensity that reflect specific aspects of climate, geography, and soil. As German wine rises in popularity, this lavishly illustrated and informed guide presents an unrivaled introduction to the country's primary wine regions and grape varieties, including Riesling, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir, as well as wine styles and culture. Stephan Reinhardt profiles 70 leading producers whose personalities, philosophies, and authentic wines best represent today's exciting German wine scene. This guide adds greatly to the enjoyment and understanding of German wines by telling more of the story under the vines and behind the wines.
QCD as a Theory of Hadrons

QCD as a Theory of Hadrons

Stephan Narison

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
This book provides a pedagogical introduction to the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Introducing the basic theory and recent advances in QCD, it also reviews the historical development of the subject, covering pre-QCD ideas of strong interactions such as the quark and parton models, the notion of colours and the S-matrix approach. The author then discusses gauge theory, techniques of dimensional regularization and renormalization, deep inelastic scattering and hard processes in hadron collisions, hadron jets and e+e– annihilations. Other topics include power corrections and the technologies of the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov operating product expansion. The final parts of the book are devoted to modern non-perturbative approaches to QCD and the phenomenological aspects of QCD spectral sum rules. The book will be a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers in high-energy particle and nuclear physics, both theoretical and experimental.

Inside IG Farben

Stephan H. Lindner

pokkari
In 1925, the three leading chemical firms in Germany - BASF, Bayer, and Hoechst - merged, together with some smaller firms, to become IG Farben. IG Farben became, like no other firm, synonymous with the participation of German industry in the most heinous crimes of the Nazi regime. This book deals in depth with one of IG Farben's leading factories, Hoechst, during the Third Reich. On the basis of long and meticulous archival research, including previously inaccessible company records, the author describes and analyzes the relationship between management and employees, and with the Nazi party and its organizations. The exclusion and persecution of employees, particularly Jewish employees, is revealed, as is the extent of Hoechst's involvement in the exploitation of forced labor, and its active participation in human experiments in concentration camps. Throughout, the author sheds light on the motivations of those responsible for this conduct.
Experience and Conduct

Experience and Conduct

Stephan Körner

Cambridge University Press
1980
pokkari
First published in 1976, this is a comprehensive study of practical thinking. Professor Körner shows the complex relations which a person's practical attitudes bear to each other, and shows in particular how their moral or prudential character depends not only on their content and form but also on their place in the system constituted by them. There are detailed accounts of the concepts of morality, prudence, justice, welfare and legality, as well as the logical foundations, epistemology and metaphysics of practical thinking. The book is intended for philosophers and for those political theorists and social scientists who are concerned with the philosophical presuppositions and implications of their enquiries. The book is deliberately organized so that those with less interest in the logical issues dealt with in Part I can proceed quickly and easily to the more substantive issues in Parts II and III.
Metaphysics

Metaphysics

Stephan Körner

Cambridge University Press
1986
pokkari
This is an ambitious and substantial study of metaphysics: its nature and inescapability. Professor Körner's method may be described as 'philosophical anthropology', and aims to arrive at a characterisation of the metaphysical beliefs with which we (have to) operate. Professor Körner begins by describing how the categorical framework of a person's metaphysical beliefs may be embedded in more ordinary beliefs and practical attitudes to the world. He illustrates the variety of such frameworks and describes their role, going on to explain how they may be modified by argument and reflection. This is an independent inquiry, but also the culmination of a series of Professor Körner's earlier works. The writing is extremely clear and the material sensitively controlled, revealing great learning and many suggestive insights and comparisons. It presents overall a comprehensive and carefully thought-out account of metaphysics.
Introduction to High-Energy Astrophysics

Introduction to High-Energy Astrophysics

Stephan Rosswog; Marcus Brüggen

Cambridge University Press
2011
pokkari
High-energy astrophysics covers cosmic phenomena that occur under the most extreme physical conditions. It explores the most violent events in the Universe: the explosion of stars, matter falling into black holes, and gamma-ray bursts - the most luminous explosions since the Big Bang. Driven by a wealth of observations, there has been a large leap forward in our understanding of these phenomena. Exploring modern topics of high-energy astrophysics, such as supernovae, neutron stars, compact binary systems, gamma-ray bursts, and active galactic nuclei, this 2007 textbook is ideal for undergraduate students in high-energy astrophysics. It is a self-contained, relevant overview of this exciting field of research. Assuming a familiarity with basic physics, it introduces all other concepts, such as gas dynamics or radiation processes, in an instructive way. An extended appendix gives an overview of some of the most important high-energy astrophysics instruments, and each chapter ends with exercises.
The Multilateralization of International Investment Law

The Multilateralization of International Investment Law

Stephan W. Schill

Cambridge University Press
2009
sidottu
Attempts at developing a theory of international investment law are complicated by the fact that this field of international law is based on numerous, largely bilateral treaties and is implemented by arbitral panels established on a case-by-case basis. This suggests a fragmented and chaotic state of the law, with different levels of protection depending on the sources and targets of foreign investment flows. This book, however, forwards the thesis that international investment law develops, despite its bilateral form, into a multilateral system of law that backs up the functioning of a global market economy based on converging principles of investment protection. In discussing the function of most-favored-nation clauses, the possibilities of treaty-shopping and the impact of investor-State arbitration with its intensive reliance on precedent and other genuinely multilateral approaches to treaty interpretation, it offers a conceptual framework for understanding the nature and functioning of international investment law as a genuinely multilateral system.

"The book presses ever forward down a path of historical marvels and astonishing facts. The effect is like a master class that's accessible to anyone, and Agent Garbo often reads as though it were written in a single, perfect draft."--The Atlantic Before he remade himself as the master spy known as Garbo, Juan Pujol was nothing more than a Barcelona poultry farmer. But as Garbo, he turned in a masterpiece of deception that changed the course of World War II. Posing as the Nazis' only reliable spy inside England, he created an imaginary million-man army, invented armadas out of thin air, and brought a vast network of fictional subagents to life. The scheme culminated on June 6, 1944, when Garbo convinced the Germans that the Allied forces approaching Normandy were just a feint--the real invasion would come at Calais. Because of his brilliant trickery, the Allies were able to land with much less opposition and eventually push on to Berlin. As incredible as it sounds, everything in Agent Garbo is true, based on years of archival research and interviews with Pujol's family. This pulse-pounding thriller set in the shadow world of espionage and deception reveals the shocking reality of spycraft that occurs just below the surface of history. "Stephan Talty's unsurpassed research brings forth one of the war's greatest agents in a must-read book for those who think they know all the great World War II stories." --Gregory Freeman, author of The Forgotten 500
Scalable Microchip Ion Traps for Quantum Computation
The development of scalable microfabricated ion traps with multiple segments for the realization of quantum computing is a challenging task in quantum information science. The research on the design, development, fabrication, and operation of the first European micro-trap is shown in this thesis. This chip-based micro-trap is an outstanding candidate towards experiments for a future quantum processor with trapped single ions. In the experiments coherent quantum state manipulation is demonstrated, and sideband cooling to the motional ground state is realized. The heating rate is determined and the applicability for quantum computation is proven. Furthermore planar trap designs are investigated - a planar microparticle trap was built and operated. A linear microfabricated planar trap was operated, showing the proof of concept of a novel designed and fabricated Y-shaped planar trap.

Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009) is a key figure in modern theology. As one of the editors of Concilium (with Karl Rahner) he was the advisor of the Dutch bishops at the Second Vatican Council and has been said to have influenced much of the content of the Council's documents. As a theologian, even when his orthodoxy was called into question before the Magisterium, he always sought to balance between tradition and renewal. This introduction guides the reader through some of Schillebeeckx's key ideas. Stephan van Erp shows how Schillebeeckx linked history and tradition to new experiences and to the spirit of his own time and how, in doing so, Schillebeeckx innovated our understanding of Christ, faith and the Church. While the cultural and political situation of his time played an important part in the development of his theological ideas, he managed to connect developments in science and culture with his theology and with the life of people in the Church.

My Storm, My Story: A Journey Through Adversity
Storms come and go, but the true test of faith is knowing that God got you through it all. We never know what we may encounter along our journey in life, but the key to understanding it knowing that we can always lean on God to support us, provide for us, and ultimately be our source of comfort and strength. God doesn't make mistakes, so knowing that we have to praise him through every storm, test, trial, and tribulation that we face. If God brings you to it, he will get you through it. This book is my story of how I walked blindly and ignorant to the fact that God reigns over all of us. It's God's will that needs to be done and not my own will. When we remove the I statements and say, Lord, let your will be done, our life will be much better. God didn't say it will feel good, but it would work out for our good. I challenge each of you to trust in the Lord and let Him guide your path. He will never leave you, nor forsake you, he is an ever-present help in a time of trouble. Deuteronomy 31:6 KJV/ Psalms 46:1.
