Britain has a rich and spectacular history. It is a core country in the development of the modern world. Indeed, as the first industrial nation, there is a strong case that Britain is its primary cause, and it certainly isn’t easy to imagine our 21st century lives without its positive influence and the moments of genius from its people; examples of which are all around us. Its intellectual achievements are exceptional, spanning more than a thousand years and comprising a fusion of people, systems, ideas, inventions, innovations, theories and explorations that are still utilised across the globe today, shaping the world in which we live and breathe on a daily basis. This book provides a universal view of British history’s positive impact on the modern world, and does so, rather uniquely, through tangible examples including scientific endeavour, artistic style, musical talents, author creativity and inventors’ curiosity, all of which have significantly shaped and benefitted the modern world. While history is broad and complex, the author simplifies and shortens each account into a deliberately concise overview of a historical development that can be easily digested and used as a springboard for further reading. British ingenuity is widely diffused across so many different fields, from entertainment, sport, literature and gastronomy through to philosophy, engineering, medicine and science. This book gives one hundred and one examples of it.

After 9/11, forensic epidemiology emerged as a leading investigative tool, partnering public health officers with law enforcement like never before. Based on the authors’ first-hand experience, Forensic Epidemiology brings to light the vast amounts of information collected by medical examiners that will be useful in advancing death investigation techniques among the forensic science, public health, and law enforcement fields. This practical resource begins with a brief overview of epidemiological science and the history of forensic epidemiology before examining the multiple functions of death certificates and the signature role of forensic epidemiologists in death investigations. Incorporating numerous illustrations and real-world examples, the book: Explains proven methods to collect, analyze, and interpret data for criminal investigationsDefines the terminology, methodology, procedures, and goals of all sectors involved for more effective collaborationExamines deaths from natural, suicidal, accidental, homicidal, and undetermined causes Describes the various decomposition states and methods used to establish positive identityThe increased frequency of criminal acts that involve deliberate biological and chemical agents underscores the need for collaboration between law enforcement investigators and public health professionals. As Forensic Epidemiology effectively demonstrates, when they work together, they can mount a powerful and successful response to threats to the American public.Dr. Steven A. Koehler was interviewed in Volume 12 of Anil Aggrawal's Internet Journal of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.
Tiger Check

Tiger Check

Spurred by their commanders during the Korean War to be "tigers," aggressive and tenacious American fighter pilots charged headlong into packs of fireball-spewing enemy MiGs, relying on their keen eyesight, piloting finesse, and steady trigger fingers to achieve victory. But by the 1980s, American fighter pilots vanquished their foes by focusing on a four-inch-square cockpit display, manipulating electromagnetic waves, and launching rocket-propelled guided missiles from miles away. In this new era of automated, long-range air combat, can fighter pilots still be considered tigers? Aimed at scholars of technology and airpower aficionados alike, Steven A. Fino's Tiger Check offers a detailed study of air-to-air combat focusing on three of the US Air Force's most famed aircraft: the F-86E Sabre, the F-4C Phantom II, and the F-15A Eagle. Fino argues that increasing fire control automation altered what fighter pilots actually did during air-to-air combat. Drawing on an array of sources, as well as his own decade of experience as an F-15C fighter pilot, Fino unpacks not just the technological black box of fighter fire control equipment, but also fighter pilots' attitudes toward their profession and their evolving aircraft. He describes how pilots grappled with the new technologies, acutely aware that the very systems that promised to simplify their jobs while increasing their lethality in the air also threatened to rob them of the quintessential-albeit mythic-fighter pilot experience. Finally, Fino explains that these new systems often required new, unique skills that took time for the pilots to identify and then develop. Eschewing the typical "great machine" or "great pilot" perspectives that dominate aviation historiography, Tiger Check provides a richer perspective on humans and machines working and evolving together in the air. The book illuminates the complex interactions between human and machine that accompany advancing automation in the workplace.
