First published in 1998. This volume looks at the life of Ibn Saud, born 1880 in Riad, son of Abdur Rahman and one of the descendants of Saud the Great.
During the 16th century close to 30 German dukes, landgraves, margraves and counts, plus one Holy Roman emperor, were known as mad - so mentally disordered that serious steps had to be taken to remove them from office or to obtain medical care for them. This book is the first to study these princes, and a few princesses, as a group and in context. The result is a flood of new light on the history of Renaissance medicine and of psychiatry, on German politics in the century of Reformation, and on the shifting Renaissance definitions of madness.
A long out-of-print classic, Lower Piedmont Country is set in northeastern Alabama, although the narrative encompasses the region form the Mississippi Delta to the Virginia Tidewater. The book surveys the history, politics, religion, economy (both rural and industrial), and folkways of the hill-country people as the author knew them during the Depression and war years.
Coincidences happen to everyone on a regular basis. Usually we shrug them off and forget them. However, when we start to catalogue coincidences we are in for a surprise. They begin to grow more frequent and, moreover, they tend to form a pattern as if conveying a secret message.
The two leading thinkers in historical geography in the English-speaking world in the mid-twentieth century were Carl Sauer and H.C. Darby. Critical evaluations of the work of Carl Sauer have been published but so far none have examined the contribution of H.C. Darby, although the influence of his ideas on his students and many other contemporary scholars in geography, history and archaeology can be seen in the development of landscape studies and advances in the understanding of processes of geographical change. This set of twelve previously unpublished essays on historical geography written by Darby in the 1960s explains the basis of his ideas. The material was intended by Darby as a book, but he failed to complete this in his lifetime. The essays are divided into three quartets of studies relating to England, France and the United States. They are accompanied by contributions from Hugh Clout, T.J. Coppock, Hugh Prince and Michael Williams which both contextualise the material and bring it up-to-date.
Kim explores themes and ideas that are of importance to Koreans around the world, such as the current standoff between South and North Korea. By reading these poems, the reader will be able to see into the soul of Koreans.
This poetic commentary on the biblical book of Philippians explores the inner workings of the theology of St. Paul, the Apostle-Missionary. Kim's analysis is insightful and accessible to even those who have never studied the Bible.
These metaphoric poems highlight sensual beauty in the mundane patterns of daily life and celebrate the beauty inherent in the feminine form.
A Dictionary of the Lycian Language by H. Craig Melchert is the first and only comprehensive dictionary in English of the Anatolian language Lycian, and represents the author's thoroughgoing revision of his originally self-published and limitedly available Lycian Lexicon.
