Charlie is an old horse who has worked on a farm all his life. Now he spends his days in the shade of a cedar tree reminiscing of the bygones and particularly his old friends who are no longer there.Sometimes he looks at the sky and wonders if they are up there. "Yes," he thinks. "The sky is a good place to be."One sunny day Charlie is dozing off when he is disturbed by a young rabbit who calls himself Blue on account of the colour of his eyes. Blue is very curious about Charlie but the old horse doesn't wish for any company and tells him to go away. While playing nearby Blue is not aware of a hawk circling above and when it swoops down Charlie, old as he is, rushes to shield the young rabbit who doesn't even realise the danger. Finally Blue goes home but only to return the next day. Charlie is slightly annoyed. He tries to explain to the young rabbit as gently as possible that their friendship is not worthwhile because he is too old and he is not going to be there for long."Where will you go?" asks Blue innocently."In the sky," replies Charlie. "It's a good place to be.""It's beautiful," agrees Blue. Blue is so persistent and likeable and above all so funny that eventually the old horse succumbs to the young rabbit's antics and a bond forms between the two unlikely characters. The time that they have together is short but they make the most of it. They roam the countryside and Charlie points out to his young friend its beauties and dangers. Then the seasons change and the time for Charlie to go to the sky arrives."I'll always be there," Charlie tells Blue. "You watch out for me ""I will," smiles Blue....... And he's true to his promise.

Scalar Diffraction from a Circular Aperture

Scalar Diffraction from a Circular Aperture

Charles J. Daly; Navalgund A.H.K. Rao

Springer

Scalar diffraction from a circular aperture is a ubiquitous problem that arises in a variety of disciplines, such as optics (lenses), acoustics (speakers), electromagnetics (dish antennas), and ultrasonics (piston transducers). The problem endures despite centuries of research because each new generation of researchers rediscovers it and adds some novel insight or new result to the existing literature. Scalar Diffraction from a Circular Aperture promises a few new results and several novel insights, particularly with regard to spatial averaging. Although the text emphasizes ultrasonic diffraction, the results and insights developed are general and may be applied to the many practical problems involving scalar diffraction from a circular aperture. Included are novel insights on mirror-image diffraction, autoconvolution diffraction, and coherent and incoherent averaging. Examples from ultrasonic imaging, a coherent imaging modality, are used to develop a fairly general theory that connects over a century of research on scalar diffraction from a circular aperture. The material is based on a synthesis of mathematics, physical optics, linear systems theory, and scalar diffraction theory. Thus, engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and students working in optics, acoustics, antenna design, biomedical engineering, non-destructive testing, and astronomy will find Scalar Diffraction from a Circular Aperture interesting, provocative, and useful.

Will is a frustrated, lonely writer with an alcohol addiction and no friends, existing in North London on a diet of insight, social disgust, self hatred and imagination during the 1990's. The book he is writing, during his forced dystopian lifestyle is the only vent for his frustration, pain, creation, doubt and invention...sometimes all either being the devil on his back or the angel in his soul. The curiosity as to his own fate controls his everyday actions and thoughts after the painful loss of his idol, causing him to career into what appears to be an unending downward spiral of his own demise or worse...someone else's.Was Will searching for forgiveness or damnation?...and would he find it...? But can he distinguish between the reality of his life and the fiction of his mind...'Takes skill to flick between two characters with a subject outside of the drama that somehow unites the pair. Does the show, don't tell thing really well.' - Brendan Brosnan MA

Daily Life in Portugal in the Late Middle Ages

Past studies of medieval Portugal have focused on such specific themes as political or administrative history and voyages of discovery. Oliveira Marques, however, has captured the vast spectrum of Portuguese daily life from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries The whole of medieval society is depicted, both on a national scale and, more important, society as it affected the individual in his everyday activities. Oliveira Marques gives us an engaging and original social history, which examines customary meals, dress, homes, work, spiritual life, even ideas about courtship and love. Medieval Portuguese culture and education, amusements and funeral customs are all a part of this portrait.

This is the autobiography of a working-class boy who became an Oxford professor. A.H. Halsey was born in Kentish Town, London, in 1923 - a railway child in a large clan. The family moved in 1926 to Rutland and then to Northamptonshire because the father had been wounded in the Great War. Halsey 'won the scholarship' to Kettering Grammar School in 1933, left school at 16, went into the RAF as a pilot cadet. The metaphor of travel through time and space is maintained throughout this autobiography. The story begins with daily walks past canal boats in Oxford, flashes to the Pacific to Hong Kong and China, and then to a glimpse of death in the John Radcliffe Hospital, promising to explain the whole journey from a council housing estate to a professorial chair at Oxford.

The Language of Drawings

The Language of Drawings

If a person is struggling with feeling that involve pain or anxiety, then we find a complex network of difficulties affecting that person's capacity to express what torments him. Whatever the person's age, they very often have no access to the words that might convey their internal conflicts. People interacting with that person may believe he is deliberately refusing to express what affects him, but it is certainly true that most times this is not the case. When dealing with children, these difficulties are even more acute. However, children often express in their drawings elements of the conflicts they are experiencing in themselves and the world in which they live. The author applied these findings in his work - not only with children and adolescents, but at times also with adults. This fascinating book arose from the discovery that single drawings could at times represent only a part of an underlying emotional experience that "completed" its expression in another picture drawn after that first one.
