20. april 1944 var en dag bergensere som opplevde den aldri glemte. Om morgenen eksploderte den .hollandske båten «Voorbode» ved Festningskaien. Virkningene av eksplosjonen ble katastrofale: Ca. 160 mennesker omkom, over 5 000 ble såret og store materielle og kulturelle verdier gikk tapt. Eksplosjonsulykken var den største enkeltstående katastrofen i Norge under krigen. «Bestefar trodde det var dommedag» inneholder en kort historisk fremstilling av eksplosjonsulykken og tiden ettepå, samt gripende beretninger fra personer som selv opplevde den. De fleste av disse var barn i 1944, men bærer fremdeles med seg traumatiske opplevelser. Boken er illustrert med fotografier og arkiv.dokumenter, hovedsakelig hentet fra Bergen Byarkiv.

Tilknytning er i nyere tid blevet et centralt begreb i spørgsmålet om danskhed og medborgerskab og kan i den sammenhæng betyde både en rettighed, en pligt, en integrationsvej, et følelsesfællesskab, et juridisk begreb og en mavefornemmelse. De forskellige forståelser har betydning for, om vi forstår relationen mellem nation og borger som en umistelig ret, et inderligt bånd eller noget, der hele tiden er til forhandling. Tilknytningens grænser stiller skarpt på tilknytningstanken i dansk migrationspolitik og de hermed forbundne ideer om, hvem der hører til nationen. Bogens forfattere undersøger tilknytning som fænomen og tankefigur i dansk lovgivning om familiesammenføring og senere ghettopakker, i den administrative vurdering af familiesammenførtes tilknytning og i mediernes fremstilling af familier klemt af samme tilknytningsregler, i psykologiske diskurser om transnationalt adopteredes mulige tilknytningsvanskeligheder og i den politiske håndtering af danske statsborgere i syriske interneringslejre.
