Which "Real" Jesus?

Which "Real" Jesus?

_ Are the gospels reliable accounts of Jesus? _ Did Jesus claim to be God? _ Was Jesus bodily raised from the dead? _ Is Jesus the only way to salvation? _ Are Christianity and Islam basically the same? _ Were the Founding Fathers orthodox Christians? Christians in America are routinely confronted with news of archaeological discoveries or new scholarship claiming to present the ""real"" Jesus. These challenges have a long tradition in America and can be traced to some of the best-known founders of our nation. In pre-Revolutionary America, the formidable Jonathan Edwards directly confronted the challenge, providing an enduring model for Christians today who desire to articulate and defend the historic, orthodox doctrine of Christ. While Edwards sought to prove the historic Jesus, Benjamin Franklin attempted to improve on the original, offering a Jesus of more practical use to his social and civic purposes. Franklin's approach, inspired by Deist thinkers and refined by Thomas Jefferson, has found new life in the advocates of the Jesus Seminar and of other alternative Christianities. Even the ambassadors of strident atheism-Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris-are resurrecting Deist arguments in their best-selling books. These skeptics notably follow the Deist tactic of using the rise of Islam to undermine the uniqueness of Jesus. As a result, there is a widespread erosion of confidence among professing Christians in the supremacy of Jesus Christ. Which ""Real"" Jesus? reveals that these new views of the ""real Jesus"" are, in fact, old news. ""What we have in Bateman's work is a clever, well-written, reader-friendly defense of the real Jesus. It is not the 'Jesus' of pseudo-intellectuals, atheists, or soft evangelicals. This work is a welcomed proclamation of the supremacy of Jesus. The author writes for the street-the average person interested in these issues-and his arguments are concise and accurate, a pleasure to have read for this believing heart."" -John Hannah, Distinguished Professor of Historical Theology, Dallas Theological Seminary ""Steve Bateman is a superb preacher and an engaging writer. In this volume he brings together important issues of American history, public theology, and evangelical identity. 'What Think Ye of Christ' is still the most urgent question we can ask today. This book helps us to listen well to that question and the answer given to it in the biblical Gospel."" -Timothy George, founding dean of Beeson Divinity School, and Senior Editor, Christianity Today ""Which 'Real' Jesus is a fascinating journey into a debate that has had a long life since the Enlightenment. Along the way we learn a great deal about ourselves and the origins of a religious faith that still rightfully casts a crucial shadow on our culture. If you love early American history and substantive religious discussion-which rarely intersect as they do here-you will enjoy this book."" -Darrell L. Bock, Research Professsor of New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Editor at Large, Christianity Today Steve Bateman has studied at Columbia International University, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Reformed Theological Seminary. He is Senior Pastor of First Bible Church in Decatur, Alabama.

Why did the West become so rich? Why is inequality rising? How ‘free’ should markets be? And what does sex have to do with it? In this passionate and skilfully argued book, leading feminist Victoria Bateman shows how we can only understand the burning economic issues of our time if we put sex and gender – ‘the sex factor’ – at the heart of the picture. Spanning the globe and drawing on thousands of years of history, Bateman tells a bold story about how the status and freedom of women are central to our prosperity. Genuine female empowerment requires us not only to recognize the liberating potential of markets and smart government policies but also to challenge the double-standard of many modern feminists when they celebrate the brain while denigrating the body. This iconoclastic book is a devastating exposé of what we have lost from ignoring ‘the sex factor’ and of how reversing this neglect can drive the smart economic policies we need today.

Is it right that, despite the promises of feminism, women’s bodies remain at the mercy of state, society and religion? Should a scantily clad woman, or a promiscuous one, be worth less than a fully covered woman, or a chaste one? Are being sexy and being smart really mutually exclusive? Can a woman be both body and brain? Victoria Bateman has confronted these questions with actions as well as words. She has appeared naked on national television, on stage, in art and at protests – using her body, as well as her brain, to deliver her message. In Naked Feminism, Bateman makes a compelling case for women’s bodily freedom, and explains why the current puritanical revival is so dangerous for women. Illustrating the swinging pendulum of bodily modesty through the ages, she takes us on a journey from the ancient civilisations of Egypt and Babylon, through the birth of Christianity and Islam, to the lax morals of the medieval period and the bawdiness of Chaucer and Shakespeare; to the clampdowns of the Puritans and later the Victorians and, more recently, to the re-veiling of the Middle East and the purity pledges of modern-day America. She ends with a plea: feminists must unite to challenge the repression of the female body, as only then can women be truly free. Also available as an audiobook narrated by the author.

Allison Bateman never envisioned that she would be re-releasing the Bonnie & Clyde book, called Retribution. The past five years have brought a renewed interest in the 1934 Bonnie & Clyde ambush. In 2013, an old newspaper article surfaced and a copy of it was sent to Mrs. Bateman. That newspaper article lifted a weight off Mrs. Bateman's shoulders. She was struggling with her decision, to honor the agreement that her great grandfather made with Frank Hamer. That agreement, prevents the release of any video or stills that Charles Baker took on that morning in 1934, before the date specified by Hamer. She was intent on preserving the integrity of Charles Baker, Frank Hamer, other members of the posse, and Bonnie & Clyde. Now for the first time, there is third party proof out there that a photographer was with the posse. Mrs. Bateman once again, wants to make the general public aware that there is what she calls, little people out there. These little people believe it is their God-given right to control what information is released about Bonnie & Clyde. They try to accomplish this by attacking new books that contain fresh information. This book was attacked when it was originally released in 2010, and she expects the same thing will happen again. The attacks are in the form of hate literature against the author and the book. This updated book release contains all the new information that was in the 2010 release, plus newer information that was added in 2015.
