Whenever there was a knock at the Capuchin Monastery door, Fr. Solanus Casey answered. The Capuchin friar's prayers brought comfort and healing to visitors he greeted at friaries in Michigan, New York, and Indiana. On September 12, 2012, inside St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit, where Casey's remains are interred, a miracle happened. Minutes after a pilgrim knelt at Casey's tomb, signs of her lifelong genetic skin disease disappeared. Pope Francis declared the healing a miracle, and nearly 70,000 people filled a Detroit football stadium on November 18, 2017, for Casey's beatification ceremony, when the Catholic Church honored him with the title of "Blessed." The Wisconsin-born Casey, a onetime prison guard who died in 1957 at the age of 86, is now one step and one more miracle away from becoming a saint. The photographs in Blessed Solanus Casey illustrate the arc of his life and legacy, including images from his early years and ministry to the poor, of those who say they have been healed by his prayers, and of the stirring Catholic rituals accompanying the friar's path to possible sainthood.

In 1953, in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of the World Series, legendary cartoonist Willard Mullin created images illustrating one of America s best-loved poems: Ernest Thayer s Casey at the Bat. These images were then put on a series of drinking glasses that were given away as premiums at various major and minor league ballparks across America. The first set was issued on April 15, 1954, at the very first home game for the modern day Baltimore Orioles. The illustrations by Mullin were for years thought to have been lost, but were found at an auction in 2002. They have been meticulously reproduced to create this stunning edition of Casey at the Bat. This edition will include additional Mullin material like the Fan s Alphabet from 1953 and the poems Iron Horse Lou and O Brooklyn, My Brooklyn from 1947. With a preface by Yogi Berra and an essay on the history of both Casey and Mullin s images by noted baseball historian Tim Wiles, this edition of Casey is the most authentic ever produced. A keepsake for the ages."

"What does it matter where we go? Wherever we go, won't we be serving God there?" Father Solanus Casey (1870-1957) -- Wisconsin native, Capuchin friar, and miracle-worker -- lived this motto throughout his life. By his gentle, cheerful example, he taught others to have that same trust in God. Wherever he was sent -- whether to parishes in New York City or monasteries in Detroit and Huntington, Indiana -- Father Casey was widely sought after for his wise counsel, powerful prayers, and miraculous healings. Visitors flocked to the humble monastery doorkeeper, seeking physical cures, advice, and spiritual renewal. Thousands of mourners attended his funeral in July 1957, hailing him as a modern saint. Catherine M. Odell proves that Father Casey's witness remains more important than ever. Featuring first-hand personal accounts and 16 pages of photos, Father Solanus Casey takes readers past the ordinary appearance of this self-effacing friar into his extraordinary holiness. Mighty Casey: The only thing extroverted Nate loves more than baseball is his quiet, reserved wedding planner, Casey. The feeling's mutual, thanks -- but it isn't all fun and games. Casey cringes at the thought of ball games, and Nate freezes at the thought of tying the knot. Casey might wish things were different, but he wouldn't trade Nate, his big heart, or his skills between the sheets for a wedding worthy of a Rockefeller. But things don't go quite according to scheme for the odd couple when Nate takes his lover out to the ball game. And who knows what might happen when Casey's called up to bat? Home Run: If opposites attract -- and in this case, they do -- Casey and Nate fit like puzzle pieces. Though married for a year and still rocking the honeymoon lifestyle, Casey's starting to feel like it's time for the next big challenge. Casey's never been interested in having kids, but he knows Nate would love a family of their own. He thinks he's ready to put aside past prejudices, but he knows it's not the kind of decision you make on a whim. Is Casey ready to grant Nate his wish to become a dad and wind up the pitch for a proper "home" run?

On the hundredth anniversary of the production of Sean O'Casey's Dublin plays at the Abbey Theatre, this timely book, Sean O'Casey: Political activist and writer situates O'Casey in the literary and political context of his time. It is written in an accessible style that will appeal to both a general and an academic readership. O'Casey has been widely acknowledged as one of Ireland's foremost dramatists. Drawing on archival material as well as a close reading of his drama, O'Brien examines the influence of the Young Ireland writers, Charles Stewart Parnell, The Gaelic League, and especially the Irish labour leader James Larkin on his development as a writer and a political activist. This book places O'Casey at the centre of Ireland's cultural and political history, charting his involvement in the shaping of modern Ireland, which is interwoven with a political and dramatic critique of post-independent Ireland and the wider world.O'Casey was one of the most political writers of his generation, constantly exploring the frontiers between literature and politics. Like his friend Bernard Shaw, he wrote for a purpose. His life reflects the history of the early twentieth century, a period shaped by two great ideas: nationalism and socialism. History and politics are woven into the fabric of his life and his drama. This book is an engaging and highly original account of one of the finest dramatists of the twentieth century, with a focus on the social and political movements that inspired his writing across the entire span of his career, challenging traditional interpretations that have focused almost exclusively on the three Dublin plays and the dramatic aspect of his life. By placing the working-class at the centre of his drama O'Casey gave a voice to those who are rarely heard: the poor, the dispossessed and the tenement-dweller, whose lives he shaped into works of art.
