Dabei handelt es sich um einen Prozess, durch den bestimmte Erfahrungswerte und "nicht zertifiziertes" Wissen entweder anerkannt oder mit einem akademischen Wert versehen werden. Sehr oft wird der akademische Wert im Rahmen des Europ ischen Systems zur Anrechnung von Studienleistungen (ECTS) ausgedr ckt, wie dies beispielsweise am Dublin Institute of Technology der Fall ist, jedoch kann dies auch au erhalb eines akademischen Leistungspunktesystems geschehen. In diesem Fall wird AP(E)L verwendet, um eine Befreiung von bestimmten Programmen zu erlangen.
