This veritable handbook of the Roman Liturgy for the so-called "Great Week," or Holy Week, commemorating the chief historical events in the Christian narrative of the redemptive passion and death of Jesus Christ, consolidates the "unreconstructed" liturgical texts from the Roman Missal and Roman Breviary from before the reforms of the early 1950s. Abbot Cabrol, an early twentieth-century liturgist of unparalleled ability, renders the liturgical texts in the vernacular with notable grace and clarity, while his historical and theological commentaries add context and meaning to these most venerable and antiquated of all rites within the Roman Catholic liturgy.

In The Murdered City (1925), Blasius, an unknown and mocked scholar, manages to create a philosopher's stone which transforms everything it touches into gold. This diabolical man acquires an island, gathers other unfortunate people, builds a fantastic city and reigns over it.The Murdered City has affinities with accounts of island utopias gone wrong and doomed superscientific cities. Science enables the fulfillment of the ancient alchemical dream, but gold here functions as a symbol of modern civilization as an irresistible force of corruption. A second novel included in this volume, By Wireless (1927), shares the speculative elements of the plot, the strange character of its disfigured protagonist, and the bizarrerie of his hopeless and fatal amorous obsession.

This black and white edition tells the story of a pharaoh whose son was changed into a frog by a sorcerer. This sorcerer told the frog that he could become human again once every one hundred years if he would be kissed by an Egyptian princess. The frog wandered in Egypt for a long time, witnessing events and remembering them, and eventually came to the US. There he found a child who was the daughter of a medical doctor of Egyptian descent. The frog told her that one of her ancestors was a pharaoh and that therefore she was an Egyptian princess. He persuaded the child to kiss him.As soon as she did, the frog changed into an Egyptian prince. He was dressed as the son of a pharaoh, and he proceeded to tell her his story. He told her of his life in the palace of his father and described all the important buildings and monuments of the pharaonic period. He described events that happened in the kingdom, as he had witnessed those events first as a prince and then as a frog. Many of the beliefs presented in the story are the products of the author's imagination, such as mermaids, nilemaids, underwater kingdoms, and talks with animals. A belief in sorcery, however, has always existed. The novel is ultimately a moral story. It emphasizes that criminals are caught and that they pay for their crimes.
Mathematical morphology has developed a powerful methodology for segmenting images, based on connected filters and watersheds. We have chosen the abstract framework of node- or edge-weighted graphs for an extensive mathematical and algorithmic description of these tools. Volume 1 is devoted to watersheds. The topography of a graph appears by observing the evolution of a drop of water moving from node to node on a weighted graph, along flowing paths, until it reaches regional minima. The upstream nodes of a regional minimum constitute its catchment zone. The catchment zones may be constructed independently of each other and locally, in contrast with the traditional approach where the catchment basins have to be constructed all at the same time. Catchment zones may overlap, and thus, a new segmentation paradigm is proposed in which catchment zones cover each other according to a priority order. The resulting partition may then be corrected, by local and parallel treatments, in order to achieve the desired precision.
Mathematical morphology has developed a powerful methodology for segmenting images, based on connected filters and watersheds. We have chosen the abstract framework of node- or edge-weighted graphs for an extensive mathematical and algorithmic description of these tools.Volume 2 proposes two physical models for describing valid flooding on a node- or edge-weighted graph, and establishes how to pass from one to another. Many new flooding algorithms are derived, allowing parallel and local flooding of graphs. Watersheds and flooding are then combined for solving real problems. Their ability to model a real hydrographic basin represented by its digital elevation model constitutes a good validity check of the underlying physical models. The last part of Volume 2 explains why so many different watershed partitions exist for the same graph. Marker-based segmentation is the method of choice for curbing this proliferation. This book proposes new algorithms combining the advantages of the previous methods which treated node- and edge-weighted graphs differently.
The city-states of fifteenth-century Italy exerted unprecedented cultural influence on Europe and the Mediterranean and acted as a bulwark against the imperial and bellicose designs of the empires that surrounded them. Acclaimed French historian, Fernand Braudel, brings to life the two extraordinary centuries that span the Renaissance, Mannerism, and Baroque and grippingly portrays the complex interaction between art, science, politics and commerce during Italy’s extraordinary cultural flowering. Considered one of the great modern historians, Fernand Braudel was a leader of the Annales School. His many books include The Mediterranean, and A History of Civilizations.
Board games have long fascinated as mirrors of intelligence, skill, cunning, and wisdom. While board games have been the topic of many scientific studies, and have been studied for more than a century by psychologists, there was until now no single volume summarizing psychological research into board games. This book, which is the first systematic study of psychology and board games, covers topics such as perception, memory, problem solving and decision making, development, intelligence, emotions, motivation, education, and neuroscience. It also briefly summarizes current research in artificial intelligence aiming at developing computers playing board games, and critically discusses how current theories of expertise fare with board games. Finally, it shows that the information provided by board game research, both data and theories, have a wider relevance for the understanding of human psychology in general.
