Family Maps of Forrest County, Mississippi

Family Maps of Forrest County, Mississippi

188 pages with 44 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Forrest County, Mississippi, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 2838 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 53 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Here are the counts for parcels of land mapped, by the decade in which the corresponding land patents were issued: DecadeParcel-count 1820s2 1830s2 1840s43 1850s174 1860s19 1870s7 1880s992 1890s1007 1900s454 1910s121 1920s13 What Cities and Towns are in Forrest County, Mississippi (and in this book)? "It had been a hard day in the fields, for the birds were wild and wary. And when we drew up our chairs around the fire, after supper, it was with a sigh of relief to get our boots off. B told about how the old cock partridge had dodged behind a cedar, just about as soon as he got up from the covert; while P told of his surprise when he flushed a bird, and it fell to a shot from a thicket close by, just as he caught sight of it, and was just about as surprised to see P standing there with gun at ready." If you want to hear stories of gunning or fishing you want to sit over a rock maple fire in the kitchen of a camp after the day's sport is over. Lake Field and Forrest is a to visit that camp kitchen and listen to the rambles of Frank Bates. A wonderful collection of stories by this self proclaimed "sportsman-naturalist". Published in 1899 his stories paint a lavish picture of a golden era of hunting and fishing that thankfully has been preserved through the journals and writings of sportsmen like Bates of that time.

Camp Forrest was a World War II induction, training and prisoner of war facility in Tullahoma. The self-sustained city was home to seventy thousand soldiers and about twelve thousand civilian employees. In 1943, the base accepted and housed German and Italian POWs. After the war ended, the base was decommissioned and dismantled. The legacy of the facility at home and abroad is still evident today. The memories of those who lived, worked, trained and grew up during this time of sacrifice and war recount a time the world has not seen since. Author Elizabeth Taylor uses numerous personal interviews, newspaper articles, diaries and biographies to tell the stories of those who lived through the era.

Leon Forrest (1937-1997) was among the most innovative and ambitious African American fiction writers of the twentieth century. His books-which include novels There Is a Tree More Ancient than Eden, Divine Days, The Bloodworth Orphans, and Two Wings to Veil My Face, and the posthumously published novella Meteor in the Madhouse-fused classical mythology, realism, and African American history and culture. Largely set in his native Chicago, Forrest's novels comprise an oeuvre of powerful urban modernism. Conversations with Leon Forrest collects interviews ranging from 1975 to 1997. Forrest discusses his literary influences (William Faulkner, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Thomas Hardy, Dylan Thomas), the significance of both Catholicism and Baptist impulses in his writing, and the intersection between politics and aesthetics in black literature and culture. Music-jazz, folk, blues, and gospel-also played an im-portant role in developing Forrest's aesthetic. Throughout the collection, Forrest's wit, erudition, and candor are evident. His moral concerns, disciplined work ethic, and stylis-tic invention are explored. Conversations with Leon Forrest is a valuable introduction to a writer who was recognized as a literary genius by Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison. Dana A. Williams is associate professor of African American literature at Howard University. She is the author of ""In the Light of Likeness-Transformed"": The Literary Art of Leon Forrest and, with Sandra Shannon, the editor of August Wilson and Black Aesthetics.
